things to remember while drawing:
anatomy is great but dont stop because you cant get it perfect
not every picture has to be a masterpiece
try new things but remember its ok to draw things you like to draw
just because someone younger than you is âbetterâ than you are does not mean you are untalentedÂ
everyone sees things differently
be proud of what you can do because nobody can do things the same way you can
Does anyone know of any resources specifically concerning how to draw faces loads of times while having them look like theyâre the all still the same person/character? Assume I know that practice is key, Iâd just like some additional learning stuff to try to help with how to practice and how to work most effectively. I can sort-of make them look sort-of like the same person, but only with extreme effort and having a sort of âmaster faceâ I constantly refer back to, which is ~fine for stuff Iâm doing at the moment but would make other things Iâd like to do very difficult.
Iâm assuming this is a difficult skill for everyone, although Iâm worried that they learn it in the same way that they learn to write letters in the same way each time, which I have never been able to do - this is at least part of why my handwriting is so appalling. Okay, Iâm not worried, Iâm properly scared; Iâd find some books or videos or whatever really reassuring just in terms of giving me something to hook onto. Just being told it is difficult for everyone and I should just practice, probably less so, because I do appear to have some sort of never-named, never-diagnosed lifelong co-ordination Issue which means I donât always master things with repeated practice.
Iâm okay with recs for things that cost A Money - I might not be able to get them immediately but if I know theyâre worthwhile it will be something to think of in future.
Art people? @aprilwitching? @pilferingapples? @barrydeutsch? Other Art Friends and Followers? People who Know A Guy? Random helpful strangers?Â
I go with having a character model sheet I can pin up in front of my drawing area. After Iâve drawn a character in the comic for a while, I make a new model sheet consisting of the character at various angles, taken from panels Iâve drawn in which I think the character looks especially âright.â
In my experience, readers are actually much more forgiving than many cartoonists realize. Thereâs no need for a characterâs face to ever be perfectly the same in every panel. In fact, itâs probably inevitable that how you draw your characters will evolve over time. Whatâs more important is that the basic character design makes it clear at a glance which characters are which - because although readers donât mind (or, usually, notice) faces morphing a little from panel to panel, they DO mind not being able to tell characters apart.
So my advice, which might not be helpful, would be to not kill yourself over drawing faces with perfect consistency. Instead, work on making sure that you have character designs which will make it clear at a glance which character is which, even if the faces do morph a little.
reblogging just bc this is really good, concise cartooning advice
I break down characters into smaller parts. What is their eye shape? What is their nose shape? What is their mouth shape? What is their jaw shape? Even if I can only draw 3 different types of each of those features, thatâs still 81 different combinations. Theyâre all fairly simple variations of features, but giving those features names helps to remember them all. Itâs not just an eye. Itâs an upturned eye or a hooded lid or an almond shape or a bulging eye. Itâs not just a face, itâs a heart shape or diamond shape or square shape. I can remember that a character has a square jaw, thin lips, hooded eyes, upturned nose.Â
Break âem down into parts, categorize those parts for reassembly later.
Really good advice all around! Seconding @rosalarian â I tend to make a mental catalog of descriptions of individual parts that I associate with certain characters. âShe has a pert noseâ, âhe has thick eyebrowsâ, etc etc. Whenever faces are looking off, I go through this mental checklist to see if Iâm hitting all my targets. (And like @barrydeutsch, I also paste previously drawn faces into my file to make sure I stay consistent. But a little drift is good too! Especially if youâre drawing something really expressive. Sometimes you want to really push shapes for big moments or emotions.)
11 Self-Defense Techniques (That Even A Child Could Use)
These are great! These are all really useful methods of defending yourself and I actually learned most of these in my Krav Maga classes.Â
I would have to go up against people (usually guys) twice my size and could easily overpower me, but these tricks DO work and they donât require a lot of strength.

Popular Oils, Butters, Natural Ingredients and How to use them on Natural hair
1. When you want to take advantage of the humidity: Glycerin, honey, aloe vera juice Why: Humectants (moisture retention). How to use: Add to a moisturizer or a leave-in.
2. When you want an oil-based sealant: Soybean oil, grapeseed oil, castor oil, avocado oil, sweet almond oil Why: These oils can reduce moisture loss. How to use: Use separately or add some to your moisturizer.
3. When you want a light sealant: Jojoba oil, grapeseed oil Why: These oils are light compared to other oils. How to use: Use separately or add some to your moisturizer.
4. When you want a heavy sealant: Olive oil, shea butter (melted) mixed with any oil Why: Olive oil is one of the heavier oils. Many butters (such as shea) contain fatty acids like oils but are heavier than oils. How to use: Use separately or add some to your moisturizer.
5. When your scalp is itchy: Tea tree essential oil, aloe vera juice Why: Some find either of these substances to be soothing to the skin. How to use: (Tea tree) Use a few drops with water or a carrier oil. (Aloe vera) Use straight or mix with water. NOTE: If you are pregnant or have a health condition, please consult your doctor before using essential oils.
6. When your scalp is dry: Jojoba oil, aloe vera juice, grapeseed oil Why: Jojoba oil is light and said to be very similar to our sebum. Aloe vera juice is light, moisturizing, and soothing to the skin.  Grapeseed oil contains a high amount of linoleic acid, which has been shown to protect against moisture loss (British Journal of Derm. 1976 Sept;95(3):255â64). How to use: (Jojoba, grapeseed) Massage a few drops into the scalp. (Aloe vera) Use straight or mix with water.
7. When you want a moisturizing or softening oil: Grapeseed oil, safflower oil, castor oil, argan oil Why: These oils tend to leave the hair feeling soft and moist. How to use: Use separately on damp hair or add some to your moisturizer.
8. When you want a moisturizing or softening non-oil: Glycerin, aloe vera gel/juice, rosewater, honey, water Why: Glycerin and honey are humectants (good for moisture retention). Aloe vera gel/juice and rosewater are moisturizing. Water is the best natural form of hydration. How to use: Use separately, add to your moisturizer, or mix one (or more) ingredients to create a moisturizing spritz. Glycerin and honey work best when applied to damp hair or mixed with water.  NOTE: Adding water, aloe vera juice, orrosewater to a whipped butter can create an environment for bacterial and/or fungal growth.
9. When you want shine or sheen: Castor oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, apple cider vinegar Why: Castor oil has been shown to impart sheen (J Cosmet Sci. 2003 Jul-Aug;54(4):335-51). Coconut oil, avocado oil, and apple cider vinegar are ones that many naturals swear by. How to use: (Castor, coconut, avocado) Use separately or add on top of your moisturizer. (Apple cider vinegar) Use as a post-wash rinse with cold water for 5 minutes.
10. When your shampoo is drying: Coconut oil, olive oil, argan oil Why: These oils are moisturizing and lubricating. How to use: Pre-poo with any of the above oils or add to shampoo.
11. When your shampoo is not cleansing enough: Baking soda Why: Easily lifts oils and dirt. How to use: Mix a little with your shampoo. (Be sure to follow up with an apple cider vinegar rinse.)
12. When you want more slip in your conditioner: Shea butter (melted), coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil Why: Lubricating. How to use: Add some to your conditioner.
13. When you want a more moisturizing conditioner: Glycerin, honey, shea butter (melted), argan oil Why: (glycerin, honey) moisture retention; (shea butter) emollient. How to use: Add some to your conditioner.
14. When you want a more strengthening conditioner: Coconut oil, gelatin, other hydrolyzed protein (e.g. keratin, collagen) Why: Coconut oil has been shown to penetrate the hair and reduce keratin loss (J Cosmet Sci. 2003 Mar-Apr;54(2):175-92). Hydrolyzed protein, including gelatin, provides reinforcement by temporarily patching the cuticle layer.  For maximum strengthening, go for conditioners containing hydrolyzed protein. How to use: (Coconut oil) Best used as a pre-poo to minimize breakage, but may also use post-wash. (Gelatin) Mix with an avocado, yogurt, and/or oils to create a strengthening conditioner. (Other hydrolyzed protein) Find a commercial conditioner with this ingredient.
15. When you want more hold and definition: Shea butter, mango butter, beeswax, flaxseed gel How to use: Add some to your moisturizer or use separately.
16. When you want to add fragrance to your mixture: Lavender essential oil, jasmine essential oil, rose essential oil, orange essential oil Why: These oils are some of the better options for specifically adding fragrance.  Lavender, jasmine, and rose have floral scents while orange has a citrusy scent. How to use: Add some to your moisturizer or spritz.
17. When you want a lighter, less oil-based whipped butter (e.g., warm weather): Aloe vera gel, jojoba oil Why: moisturizing, but light How to use: Mix a 1:1 shea butter and aloe vera gel mixture (or a variation of this recipe).
18. When you want a heavier, more oil-based whipped butter (e.g., cold weather): Olive oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil, castor oil Why: moisturizing and sealing How to use: Mix a 1:1 or 2:1 shea butter and oil(s) mixture.

A story about teen pregnancy
I found out I was pregnant at 17, it threw my whole world into a whirlwind of hell. I had just started grade 12, (it was the second day in) and the news shocked and seemed to impair me from acting on anything. My boyfriend and I had been dating for a couple years but thereâs no easy way to take that news especially when youâre still in high school.
So I hid from the situation and didnât tell anyone other then my mom (I was living with my dad at the time.) The thing is that I just couldnât imagine ever having an abortion; it just wasnât the choice for me and I knew I physically couldnât do it. Â My mom took that alright but was obviously concerned.
I went fourth with the pregnancy with my mom knowing, a few friends and obviously my doctor. But I knew I had to get my priorities in line and that meant graduating early so I immediately went into the office and found out a way to graduate half a year early. I also informed my place of work that Iâd need to move up a position (cashier - thereâd be no heavy lifting) I also asked for as many hours as possible, (it was time to save up an emergency fund or as I liked to call - ânot spending unless weâre living on the streetsâ account. A sum of money that isnât talked about and is never touched.) Being pregnant, the only thing iâd really spend my money on is food anyway.
And then I told my dad and stepmom. They told me they would be there for me for whatever option I wanted. But I always knew I wanted to keep my baby. It was the one thing I needed to do. They didnât understand that so they festered in resentment. My boyfriend and I decided to get married in the winter, (I was 18 in the fall so I would be 5 and a half months pregnant by the time we got married.)
Kids at school started to find out, either by word of mouth or that I was gaining weight. Still, I tried to hide it and get through school. I started losing friends. At about 4 months along, I couldnât take the drunken slurs of resentment I received from my stepmom - âyour marriage wonât last!â âyouâll be on welfare!â âyou canât live here until you find a place!â and bursts of anger from my dad. I heard through  several people that they were planning to kick me out at the end of the month, one month away from my wedding. So I packed a bag and moved out. All the while kids at school were gossiping, staring, and making remarks. But I still made it in to get my work done, and brought my work clothes so I could continue to work. It felt like I was trying to better myself and get everything prepared but I kept getting shoved back. It hurt, but I knew it wasnât worth losing my possibility of maternity leave or saving money. I was planning on living at a womenâs shelter until we moved into our apartment. It was my best option to continue school and work but at last minute my mom swooped in to save me as mothers often do. I lived with my mom and stepdad out in the country and my mom drove me to school and picked me up from work. All the while, we planned the wedding that was fast approaching and maneuvered our way to doctors appointments. My mother was a real god-sent in helping me get on my feet. My husbands family and half of mine were incredibly supportive and helped us get married.
I think the biggest thing I learned with that is that having kids and getting married either brings family and friends closer together or tears them apart. In the instances where people didnât respect my choice, I cut them out of my life.
My husband and I got married December 21st of 2012. We moved out into a crummy two-bedroom apartment for $900/a month. I continued to work up until my due date, my husband looked into finding a trade to make more money. He did. And he started to work away from home as an apprentice welder. I received my mat leave and started trying to get my licence - I got it at 8 ½ months pregnant, (pretty late but I was still proud that we made it happen.)
Our little girl was born on May 10th 2013. She changed our whole lives in every way, I donât think Iâve ever known a love as instinctual and deep as the love I have for my daughter. She lights up my world. She gave me light when I suffered for so long in darkness and uncertainty.
The point that Iâm trying to get at here is that you may go through hell and back, lose a lot of friends in the process and get hurt over and over but you have to stick to your gut reaction. About everything, careers, babies, marriage, friends, family, but especially about this. You may get beaten down in every sense and it might be hard to go on. It isnât the easiest path but life isnât always as clean cut and down the well-trodden path. It can be messy and hard and relentless but its absolutely worth it. Hold onto the wonderful people in your life who donât leave, and who stay to help you - those people are worth having in your life. Sometimes it takes a pinch of luck, sometimes a little ambition. All in all, it is possible. If this story reaches just one person who is going through turmoil with young pregnancy I would be so happy. My story is maybe not as incredible as some, but we did forge our lives to be everything we wanted it to be, we hit a lucky streak and we had incredible people in our lives who lifted us up and knew we would try our best. You have the ability to do the same. Make your own choices, donât make any choices based off of anyone else because in the end thereâs just you, and you want to look back and be proud of how far you have come. Always stay true to yourself. If you look for a way to make it work, you will find it. There is always a way. The day you pull out of that uncertainty (and it will happen) is the day you finally reach success.
When you finally find that hair product ...
that works miraculously in your hair, only to realize it has been recently discontinued.Â

TEA Â (help)
I have been experimenting with making my own tea blends since I have a lot of useful stuff around the kitchen. But I can not find ANY good resource online that suggests what plants and things go well with each other or donât go well at all. I was hoping it would give me a start at ideas. Anyone have helpful tips?Â
