Dear Outlander Fandom

There is no right or wrong way to be a fan. In fact, in my experience the best ones have a larger enough community where everyone can find their niche. Outlander is far big enough that we can all have our own bubbles if we learn to just step back and breathe.

There is a whole segment of this fandom who I see as feeling the need to “parent” other fans and the crew/cast. They want to control other fan’s actions and words when all they can or should control is their own. There is no set way to be a fan or official rules published with a handbook. I do not know what this segment thinks they’re going to accomplish by spamming the stars and crew all the time with every single thing. It’s called the fourth wall y’ll and it’s a good practice to observe. Let TPTB make the show and the fans enjoy fandom.

Fanfiction is a legitmate expression of fan art. It gives a certain segment of fandom an outlet that feeds and fuels their interest in a show. It also draws in their friends and fans to new shows. I have watched programs purely because I loved an author’s writing and trusted her taste in shows. This is no longer DG’s playground, it has already been changed to be adapted - what exactly makes that different from fanfiction.

RPS as whole has not been my cup of tea in this program but again by attacking those who have existed in their own corner of the web, it will push people out who are creating their own passionate experience. They have every right to sit on their blogs and experience this show in their own way.

In the long run, do we really think anyone involved in this spends hours of their day concerned what fans on the internet are doing? I can’t imagine DG giving it a whole lot of time between writing best selling novels and cashing her extremely large checks. And I don’t think Sam and Cait bite their nails and fret over how they look to people they don’t even know and will never be part of  their actual lives.

If you drive people away from expressing their own interest in the show, you kill the whole fandom. Variety in a fandom is key to a show’s success. By stifling outlets (RPS, fanfic), you drive away passionate viewers who watch, spend, and contribute to a show’s success. This is no longer a book you buy once but something you must continue to invest in and be entertained by for it to succeed.

Stop tattling. Stop policing others. Stop Bullying and Harassing People. Find people who suit your tastes to follow and hit the lovely unfollow for those who don’t.
