swoops was capturing realness on photo day

One of the things I love most about being a photographer is being able to capture moments like this.

This past Saturday night Naptown Roller Girls (Indianapolis, IN.) Crass Knuckles proposed to her girlfriend Kentucky Fried Carnage. KFC had just finished skating in a bout with Naptown’s B-team the Warning Belles against the Cornfed Derby Dames (Muncie, IN.) in the Indiana Farmers Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, Indianapolis, Indiana. As KFC and the rest of her teammates circled the track getting high fives from the fans, Knucks and a couple other teammates snuck to the center of the track with the proposal. I was photographing them lining up with the signs while the Belles milled around the bench area celebrating their win & gathering up their gear when I heard a couple of the Belles behind me yelling, “KFC! Look! KFC! Look!” I turned around just in time to catch KFC’s reaction as it sank in what was happening. KFC skated out to the center & Knucks dropped to one knee & asked her to marry her. Knucks stood up, gave KFC the ring, turned to the crowd that was still lingering & screamed, “She said Yes!” They shared a kiss & a moment to themselves before getting swarmed by Belles teammates along with teammates from Naptown’s A-team the Tornado Sirens, as well as, Naptown’s C-team the Third Alarm.

played my first scrimmage basically since last season and it felt so, so good. ... until I realized this morning I completely forgot to put my mouthguard in. basically I'm lucky I didn't take any big hits/still have all my teeth. 😶 also the bar down the street from our practice space has $2.50 PBR and is within walking distance of the beach and a tiny (although I hear crappy) skatepark, so this summer is gonna be pretty awesome.

home team season starts in three weeks, and I'm getting back on an (almost) paleo diet so I can start getting my body ready to kick ass and take names. I say almost because I'm not planning on eliminating legumes and all whole grains - in other words, bring on the hummus and quinoa. I also have to start working out again. I still wanna give my knee a couple weeks as far as weighted squats and running go, but there's plenty of other stuff I can do. I just gotta keep my eyes on the prize and start committing again. this season I want to really keep track of everything, and come up with a comprehensive plan instead of just kinda going loosey goosey. I wish I could afford a personal trainer. we had nutcracker brunch on Sunday and I'm so excited for the new season! everyone gets along so well and I'm so hyped for us all to skate together again soon. no nuts no glory 2015!!!

recently, I had a falling out with a member of my league - nothing permanent, but the kind of argument it takes time and space to heal - and it's really bringing to the forefront how much my team loves me. I am so thankful every day to have this amazing group of women not only in my life, but on my side. this is maybe what they mean when they say roller derby saves souls.

toronto was amazing! boston massacre won 2/3 games, and although our b party lost, they played and AMAZING and super close game. good derby all around.

I'm heading up to toronto tomorrow for quad city chaos! I'm not playing, just going to be team heckle and watch a ton of quality derby. and we're going up a day early so we can spend Friday exploring the Toronto skateparks. so excited. skating and poutine and roller derby and best friends... basically the dream.
