the chronic mischaracterisation in the aftg fandom is gonna make me scream
hey man. nice regional dialect. mind if i apply some baseless assumptions about your personhood to it? i was also gonna prescribe morality to it as well. if that’s cool with you
one time I went over to a friend's house and their housemate was making paper in the living room, and we saw this big tub full of water they were using to dissolve old scrap paper into a slurry, and everyone was immediately like "oh, you need scrap paper?" and started turning out their jacket pockets and producing expired coupons and bus tickets and crumpled receipts and old shopping lists and whatever else they'd been carrying round with them for no good reason, and passing it all to the paper-making housemate to make sure it was suitable before it got torn up and dropped into the tub, while people took turns stirring the slurry with a big wooden stick. it was strangely ritualistic, like presenting an offering to some kind of temple elder for inspection before placing it in a watery shrine to be devoured and reformed. pulp for the pulp god.
I hate so much when people go "Andrew didn't break his deal with Kevin because the deal was just to protect Kevin from the Moriyamas/Riko" and then simply proceed to dismiss any emotional impact this scene might have had on their relationship.
Because the thing is not that Andrew physically harmed Kevin. Thats not the point nor the reason why he broke the deal. The thing is that the Foxes had to haul Andrew away from Kevin. It took three people to take pry Andrew off Kevin's neck. It is not just about the choking, It is about the fact Andrew wouldnt have stopped. It is about the fact Kevin had to be protected from Andrew.
You all can call me crazy here, but If I make a deal with someone for protection, I am kind of assuming the person I made the deal with wont become a threat that I will need protection from. Wild concept, I know.
The Idea that Andrew wouldnt become himself a threat to Kevin was kind of implied in their deal. Shouldnt be something that needs to be said outloud. There is no reason why Kevin would trust Andrew the way he did in TFC if he believed Andrew would ever represent real danger to him. But silly Kevin, he cannot live away from physical harm anywhere he is. He shouldnt have expected to. Just because someone promised to protect you, doesnt mean they wont almost murder you. Silly, silly Kevin
To me this argument really sounds like the "but you didnt read the fine print" moments on TV shows. It is trying to use a technicality to justify a break of trust. It is honestly kind of stupid.
So, am I saying Andrew hates Kevin? No. Am I saying their relationship cant be fixed? No. Am I saying Andrew doesnt care about Kevin? No.
What I am saying is: Kevin deeply trusted Andrew, this is a point that is reiterated time and time again in TFC, so much so that Neil gets intrigued by Andrew because of how much Kevin trusts him. Saying that Kevin needing their team to protect him from Andrew somehow didnt break the deal they had or the trust Kevin had in Andrew is so forced.
You can say that Kevin also broke Andrew's trust by hiding the truth, you can say Kevin understands and forgives Andrew, you can say Kevin expected It once he decided to keep Neil's secret and he did It knowing the price he would pay. There are many ways to look at the choking incident and many perspectives that can lead to both characters still having a strong and meaningfull relationship with each other. What to me is pathetic is going "It is fine because Andrew was only supposed to protect Kevin from Riko, which obviously means that Andrew being the one to almost kill Kevin is okay then"
Lets just stop trying to find stupid loopholes just to make It simple. This is the type of thing that makes the conversation shallow and does no one any good. Andrew broke his word. He said he would protect Kevin and Kevin needed protection from Andrew. Andrew cannot protect Kevin If he is the threat.
Does this mean everything Andrew did for Kevin stops mattering? Absolutely not. Does this mean all the times Andrew stopped Kevin from going back are now unimportant? Absolutely not. Does this mean their relationship is forever broken? Absolutely not.
On the contrary, I think exactly all they have lived through togheter and all the times Andrew was there and indeed protected Kevin are what will allow them to be okay. As well as the fact that both of them did what they did because of Neil and for him.
So no, my point is not to demonize Andrew or say his relation with Kevin is somehow broken beyond repair. The point is that yall need to stop trying to find loopholes to scape the fact Andrew did in fact break their deal. This doesnt mean what he did is unforgivable and it doesnt erase all the times Andrew did upheld his part of their deal, both before and after the incident too.
Andrew lost control in a highly stressful situation when someone he loved was taken from him. He is not bad for It. It is very comprehensible and I dont think It is out of character for him. But It also doesnt mean what he did has no impact, It doesnt change he did hurt very badly someone who had trusted their life in him.
Both things can be true at the same time.

kevin day should’ve been an ancient greek tragic heroine and instead he got stuck in a self published 2010s contemporary sports/crime thriller… and he didn’t even get put on the woke team so he doesn’t know about estrogen or bisexuality
if i couldn't have any of the obvious first choice superpowers i would want my power to be the power of i can go anywhere and its not a problem. the way this power would work is that as long as im peaceful and respectful i can go anywhere and nobody will see it as weird or see me as a target for hostility. i can walk into a cool house to politely peep the decor or walk into a tall office building to politely peep the decor or walk around a city at night alone to politely peep the decor or walk into a strange facility to politely peep the decor or walk onto a plane and ride the plane to its destination and then walk around there to politely peep the decor and its fine as long as im chill. no need to make me faster or anything i can just walk at a normal pace. its good for the soul.
I don't know if full on execution is proper justice, but at least they did something.
if completing tasks feels so good and reminds me completing tasks is easy then why is starting them the emotional equivalent of sending my first born to war

i was training a young person at work, and she referred to sexual assault as "SA" out loud, and i immediately was like, "no, it's sexual assault, call it what it is," bc idgaf if the algorithm overlords have taught y'all that you should fear direct language, how tf do any of you expect to ever address real issues with any amount of seriousness if you can't even say the words? imagine an advocate looking a sexual assault survivor in the eyes and asking "did he grape you?" it's absolutely fucking absurd, but these young interns and new hires are coming into an environment where we deal with survivors of all different kinds of abuse, and they're coming with the mindset that the words are as bad as the actions, and that makes them shitty at the job and look juvenile af
i HATE self-censorship for a lot of reasons, but being in crisis work makes it even more frustrating. who are you censoring for? like i am being so fr, WHO are you censoring for? have you even thought it through? people who have been raped know that they have been raped. if someone attempts suicide or is grieving someone who did, saying "sewer slide" isn't going to protect them from any of the feelings. a murder victim's family isn't going to feel better bc you said "unalived" instead of murdered. if anything, it's just extremely invalidating and othering. it's saying "what happened to you is so bad that i won't even say the word," which is NOT trauma-informed care. you are not protecting survivors/victims when you self-censor. the ONLY things you protect when you self-censor are the puritanical ideologies that are being encouraged by rich fascists who want your money and obedience
say the fucking words, guys. just say the goddamn words before i go insane!!!
