21 Jump Street
I missed 21 Jump Street the first time around so I though I would check out the series. It is not the deepest TV you will find, but is surprisingly good for a 1987 show, which is mostly due to Johnny Depp not being a superstar yet, so he would deign to be in a TV show.
Love this scene when Johnny’s character, Officer Tom Hanson, defends himself against allegations of being a liberal.
I was also surprised to see Vancouver as the setting for a TV show that long ago. I guess they were ahead of the curve much like another well known Fox show the Simpson’s who outsourced much of their animation to the talented animator’s in South Korea.
I go to Vancouver only twice a year these days, but spent a week of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Gastown. While it has been gentrified quite a bit, it is still fun to see this historic neighborhood over 20 years ago looking surprisingly similar to today.
Overall it is a fun show to watch for unwinding after a few tense episodes of a more intense show such as Treme or the Wire.
What is somewhat embarrassing to admit is that I just assumed this was one of those LA shows until I saw in the credits this picture of a hockey goalie.
Well that was a surprise so then I did a little digging to find out the show was set in “Evergreen State.” The only place that fits that description is Washington state, which is just a small remove from Vancouver. I guess the northwest was a bit more on the map back then, aside from the Twilight bubble which will hopefully just go the fuck away.
It’s a bit strange on the surface that at the end, Tom is all cuddling up to Judy in a comforting way, soothing her as if she were fragile, when she’s one of the people who had the easiest day. Doug also had it pretty good, but he was at least in a state of deep worry over whether Hanson was alive or not, before he got into the school. Harry’s taken several hard knocks and probably should be checked over by a medic. Tom saw his life flash before his eyes at least twice today, more if you count just the threats and not the ‘i’m dying RIGHT THIS SECOND’ moments.
Compared to the others, Judy was relatively safe and in control all episode.
Of course if you’re desperate to go deeper, you can read it as him giving her the comfort that he really wishes for himself but will never openly reach for. He’s a bit of a buttoned-up guy, our Hanson.
Blindsided - Part 1
New episode! Let’s hope I get into this one more.
We open in the chapel, with Penhall calling Tom over. “You gotta see this. I discovered this guy…”
Ah. There’s Blowfish.
So yeah, this guy is the janitor. “Go on, show him!” Doug pleads.
“I gotta fix the heater…”
“You fixed the heater last week!”
“If I fixed the heater permanently, I’d be out of a job.”
Doug calls over Judy and Harry to see the trick, and just before the credits roll, we get:
… up against the window.
RL, this is what the guy got hired for. Well, that and being an old buddy of Johnny Depp’s. He’ll be hanging out in the chapel and occasionally chatting with the guys for a season or so.
Anyway, on to the plot!
Another episode, another highschool. And a song starting up… whoa. It’s a Concrete Blonde song? (This surprises me because I don’t remember them being a thing until years later… in fact, we’re going to have a Jump Street episode named after a Concrete Blonde song a few years down the line, iirc. Guess I missed the first albums.)
Anyway, we get a bunch of establishing shots of different high school kids joking around or staring sadly out windows, most of whom don’t seem important. The camera lingers slightly on
in a way that suggests she’s probably an important character (we’ll see if I guess right), and the music fades away as two guys approach the school…
Two notes here! One, pre-Twin Peaks Sherilyn Fenn! So yeah, that girl is definitely a major plot character. And also, while it may be hard to tell, that’s Doug and Tom coming in together, Tom looking all tough with rags tied round his head, which means this is probably the first appearance of their cover identity as The McQuaid Brothers.

Blindsided, Part 2
… so yes, this episode is shaping up to be rather more serious than the last one.
Back at the chapel…
Fuller’s updating them on the case being built against the dealer they nabbed at the burger joint. He’s out on bail at the moment, and has a history of dangerous violence, so the McQuaids need to be careful with their cover.
“Because if he finds out who you are, he will kill you. And that generates massive paperwork, so don’t let it happen.”
Looks like Tom isn’t reporting his little encounter with Diane yet.
Night, somewhere? Then a shot in an alley, then a pair of shiny shoes walking, not sure where we’re going with this.
A hand fumbles with a doorknob, then searches the area for a spare key…
… Doug is innocently asleep on the couch, unaware that someone is trying to get inside…
