On Thirty
Thirty had always seemed like some sort of mythical age. If I somehow made it to thirty, I would have my life together! I would be an adult, doing adult things and I’d be excelling. Until age twenty eight or so, it seemed like thirty was some sort of strange and distant land. It was where all of my older friends lived, with their children and their homes.
Then it happened. I turned thirty. And proceeded to have a complete meltdown about the shambles I found myself in. I took time to try and figure out where I had gone wrong. This train to adulthood had come through the station and I must have been taking a nap or something.
From childhood I remember one statement that was seemingly on every single report card and note that was ever sent home with me. “Beth would do great if she applied herself.” And no doubt I would have. I was an expert at evading homework, minimum effort to get a B. I could have made charts about how little work I needed to do to pass any given class. Unfortunately that was the only math I was ever good at: The math of 80 percent. The math of ‘good enough.’
Motivation is, and has always been a strangely illusive force. The sort of thing that rests in the hearts of others, and not within myself. Sure, there are things I love, that I love so fully and so truly that I’m sure I would be happy doing them… probably.
A hairstylist, cameraperson, actor, anthropologist and stage manager look back at me when I see a mirror. These are the things I’ve done so far. It seems like doing many things is frowned upon; you should do the one thing that you love, the one thing you are passionate about. But what if you are only a little passionate about a lot of things? What I end up looking like is a person with no goals, no direction. I’m just treading water and trying to stay afloat.
My thirtieth birthday was meant to be a triumph. From a child with depression to an adult with a plan. Only my plan seems to be not making plans. I haven’t grown up yet and I don’t know what I want to be when I do.

Thank you for this.
I’ll miss you terribly.
When I was a teenager, just starting college, I had untreated depression. I was an absolute mess trying to live away from home for the very first time. I didn’t easily make friends and I spent most of my time alone in my room. I often contemplated suicide.
Over the span of a few months I watched just about every single Alan Rickman movie. Then I watched ever interview I could find on Youtube, I just absorbed every bit of this man’s work that I possibly could. And it helped.
A man who didn’t get a role in a movie till 46, who had a speech impediment that gave him that bass voice I so admired. And every single account from those who had met him was what an outstanding human being he was.
When I was in my mid-20′s, Alan Rickman was doing a play in NYC. I had every intention of spending an entire paycheck to fly up there to see it. I then lost my job. I’ve never regretted not doing something more.
Today I found out that he had passed away. He’s been such an inspiration to me and others that I couldn’t possibly not write something about it. A fantastic artist and truly brilliant person left the world today; and Earth is just a bit less joyful because of it.
Thank you Alan Rickman for saving my life and for being such an incredible inspiration. Always.
