Wood Engraving Wednesday

From 1953-1983, renowned American wood engraver John De Pol (1913-2004) produced illustrations for a series of thirty, privately-printed keepsakes on Benjamin Franklin (of which we hold thirteen). The images shown here are selections from the keepsakes, privately printed in a commemorative publication entitled Thirty, and published in connection with the celebration of Printing Week in New York in 1987.

Our copy is a gift from our late friend Jerry Buff (1931-2025) and bears John De Pol's signed presentation to him.

I understand you more than ever girl

Thirty

When I was a child,

I was severely depressed.

I did not think that I would make it

passed my teens.

Twenty seemed foreign,

then I made it there.

With each step I took,

every climb forward-

my excitement grew for each year.

I didn't think I'd make it this far,

and I'm so happy I did.

I grew up hearing my mom talk about

her looming dread of aging.

Each birthday that passed,

seemed to be full of sadness

and regret.

I used to mirror her.

She's my mom, I looked up to her.

I turned twenty and was sad.

A whole chunk of my life-

gone.

Can never go back.

I took a step back

to look at it in a different light.

I made a promise to myself

that I would embrace getting older.

I made it.

I keep making it.

Now, just a few months shy of thirty-

I look forward to reaching my milestone.

I have been thinking this

since I turned twenty nine.

I have been planning on writing about it

since october, my half birthday.

I think now is the time.

I looked in the mirror

and saw my aging reflection.

I am still me.

I still look the same, yet older.

I may just view some things differently.

Things that have stayed true

though the years:

The ringing of church bells

brings me comfort-

I love trains and the sound of them,

I write

and I enjoy to grow.

Things that have changed:

I am more self aware,

my mental illnesses have improved greatly-

I share my work with all of you

and I am not as close with my family.

Life's a rollercoaster sometimes,

isn't it?

A little more than three months

to go.

I am both excited and anxious.

I cannot contain it.
