i think she has an instinctive habit of straightening other people’s collars, brushing lint from sleeves, fixing loose braids. it’s almost maternal before it’s affectionate. acts of care come more easily to her than words ever do.

the godswood never changes. that's the cruelty of it. the weirwood was old before alicent hightower ever read beneath it, and it will stand long after the last targaryen queen is dust. but for them, it is a reliquary; every version of themselves they've ever been is buried in that soil. think about what the space holds. two girls sharing a book, one dreaming of dragonback and cake, the other already learning to sit still and be useful. a marriage announcement that splits the world open in the very garden where they were closest. the godswood is the only room in the keep where they've ever told each other anything true. and that's what makes the later scenes so devastating???? when they stand beneath the red canopy as grown women, watching helaena and jaehaera. the girl who tore the page from the history book is still there. the girl who invoked her dead mother is still there.

even at their most estranged, they can only reach each other through the past, through mothers, through memory. everywhere else in the realm they are queen and dowager. under the weirwood they are just the two people who knew each other first.

I believe that alicent becomes very attached to routine after marrying viserys because routine is one of the only forms of control still available to her. she wakes at the same hour, takes her meals at the same time, attends the same devotions, walks the same corridors whenever she can. even the smallest disruption unsettles her far more than she allows anyone to see because her entire life has already been altered by choices made without her consent. I think that as she grows older, these routines become less about comfort, more about maintaining the image of a court that is orderly, pious and properly governed—even when everything beneath the surface is beginning to rot.

She could set a fallen hem, close a torn seam, or replace a loosened pearl with such neatness that the damage might never have been. Even after she became queen and found herself attended by a small army of maids, she would sometimes dismiss them and make the repair with her own hands. The quiet passage of needle through cloth, the measured pull of thread, and the simple certainty that a thing once torn might yet be made whole were known to soothe her in ways that prayers and counsel oft could not. More than one of her gowns was found to bear some small stitch wrought by the queen herself, hidden where no eye but hers was ever like to see it.
