Vidovdan
Today is a national holiday in Serbia and in Serbian culture more broadly...in English it is St. Vitus Day, a traditional feast day in the Serbian Orthodox Church. It is meant as a memorial to those Serbs who died in the Battle of Kosovo on this day in 1389 defending the country from the invasion of the Ottoman Empire. The battle was notable for the death of the Serbian Prince Lazar & Ottoman Sultan Murad I. Though it did end up a Ottoman victory and lead to the subsequent vassalage of Medieval Serbia to the Turks. Since that time it has been honored as a day of both loss and heroics in Serbian national consciousness.
