serbia still unbeaten at this world cup
dawg I tried to talk about my experience with racism as a slavic person and got told to shut up because i'm white. bitch I aint ever said I wasn't. I know there's a whole debate about whether slavic people are white or not but I'm not afraid to say yes I'm white. yes in america or some bum ass place i'd probably have an easier time because of my light skin. I probably wouldn't be identified as an ethnic minority so quickly because my skin is literally pale. nor do I think my oppression is equal to that of what black people experience
however. my not-distant ancestors were killed and gassed in the holocaust. yes, they got the little triangles put on them. my family had to flee serbia because of the yugoslav civil war and american bombings. oh and the english bombings. oh and all the other bombings. some of my ancestors were slaves. hell, the word "slave" comes from "slav". I've lived in a foreign country my whole life and it was the WHITE NATIVES who beat me, insulted me, stole my things, gave me black eyes, reduced my grades because of my accent, reduced my grades for no particular reason at all, didn't give me citizenship for 16 years, told me that because I'm slavic i won't get anywhere in life, took my parents' money, exploited my dad, I could go on...
so when black people or other people of colour tell me to get out of a discussion about racism/xenophobia/discrimination, and tell me I don't know anything because I'm white, and that my race oppressed black people... I am really left with no safe place to go.
I'm not POC enough to be considered oppressed, but I'll never be white enough for america to not blow my mum's old apartment to rubble with bombs. I'll never be white enough for me to be able to open the comments of a local news post and not see comments like "this is the slavs fault", "kill all serbs", "they're taking our jobs", "they're uncultured", "they're muddying our culture", "their skin is so white they look dead", "they're scary", "they commit most of the drug related crimes", "they should go back to their countries", "they should get bombed again"
I just don't know where to go.
