itâs like really truly wild that other peopleâs content warnings (the warnings!!! jesus christ!!!) are upsetting to you, but the fact is that people are allowed to only want to engage with content theyâre interested in or care about. furthermore, if some kind of content makes them uncomfortable, theyâre allowed to avoid it!!! itâs within anyoneâs right to want to read omgcp and not be interested in professional hockey. if they donât like the violence, the pervasive prejudices against women, poc and lgbt people, or the content just makes them uncomfortable in a general sense? thatâs what content warning tags are for.
also iâm just like⊠not even going to get into the idea that you see people employing blacklists as âblocking source material.â there are dozens and dozens of reasons why someone might not want to engage with particular content and itâs a goddamn blessing that weâre somewhat able to curate our own consumption here. like i feel like iâm missing the word âsnowflakeâ buried in here somewhere you feel?
like, i love hockey. i LOVE it. but i would be shocked if an LGBT hockey player would be angry with folks who elect not to watch pro hockey because they think the environment isnât one that wholly accepts their identity. do you honestly think that LGBT omgcp readers who might be hockey fans should just, what. tough it out? throw their support entirely behind a league that doesnât always respect them?
furthermore, as an LGBT hockey fan iâm not interested in only consuming material that accurately represents how much it sucks to be an LGBT hockey player because We Know and i donât always wanna be bummed about how much my sport maybe doesnât like me and my identity. so, i latch on to omgcp, which is consistently upbeat and positive.
as a white person i canât speak to omgcpâs relation to racial demographics in hockey but why does it seem to upset you that the writer, herself a black woman, might want to show more diversity amongst her characters than is accurate in college hockey? honest to god, why is that a bad thing???
âcheck please fails to address this and instead paints menâs ice hockey as an all accepting, loving, diverse community, when really, itâs not.â fuck, my dude. yes, thatâs exactly what it does. thatâs what itâs always set out to do. i seriously recommend that you adjust your standards of media consumption if you only want to engage with that which is so painfully realistic that you canât escape from the parts of the world that are draining, painful, and ârealâ for a few minutes every now and then. menâs hockey really isnât accepting, loving, or diverse, but if we ever want it to actually be that way, we have to start by imagining it.
i donât use a âreal hockey cwâ tag because i choose to remain balls deep in pro hockey, but if anyone whoâs an omgcp fan who feels like pro hockey isnât for them wants to? who the fuck are you to tell them they canât?
