My Favorite OG Xbox Games
Ninja Gaiden: Black I think this maybe my favorite OG Xbox game outside of the two Halo games. The game was tough, beautiful and controlled like a dream. NG Black refined and perfected a nearly flawless game and added small tweaks and features and made the game a bit easier if you so chose the game was still a bitch and a half. Alma might be one of the hardest bosses in gaming period. I had to restart my game when I fought her -- since I didn't have a single healing item, and even still it took numerous attempts to best the demon! This maybe the best pure action game ever made and one of the best challenges in gaming.
Halo: What else needs to be said about Halo? It's safe to say that it made the Xbox what it is. Who knows what would've happened without Halo? Halo set the stage for how the dual stick shooters today control. I spent countless hours playing co-op campaign on Legendary difficulty with my brother. Hundreds more playing split screen multiplayer trying to become not just the best in my building or block, but also at school.
Halo 2: H2 was probably one of the most hyped video games of all-time. Somehow, it lived up to the hype and more. More co-op for my brother and I to lose hundreds of hours together and a better more robust PvP to scream and hate each other over. Halo 2 on Xbox Live was a match made in heaven. Halo 2 had every feature you could want: party system, clans, matchmaking, custom games, true skill rankings — I could keep going and going. The only complaint anyone ever had was the cliffhanger ending. That never bothered me, especially knowing there would be more Halo in my future.
Forza: This was the beginning of these end of Gran Turismo's reign as the top car sim. Forza was prettier, had an online suite and featured car damage on the cars, which GT didn't have. It also let you change the body kits of cars and customize the design and make your car unique to you. Apart from gameplay and damage to the cars, what set Forza apart was the online lobbies and online clubs that gear heads and car lovers could join, meet, chat and complete with and against each other for fun or even pink slips.
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory: Chaos Theory refined and perfected the Splinter Cell formula and added an under-rated and fantastic competitive online multiplayer mode. The games stealth was so good even Kojima himself gave props. Spies vs Mercs was an amazing PvP mode that allowed spies in 3rd person view and mercs who were in 1st person to run around and try to see if you could sneak up or lure out the opposing players depending on your role. One of the coolest features on SvM is that if you were a merc and you captured a spy you could talk trash to them via the Xbox headset and as a Spy you could shoot a sticky cam and listen in on the Mercs conversations to see what they are trying to do and see what strategies they are plotting. Chaos Theory was probably the prettiest game that generations bar none on any of the platforms with amazing art direction and lighting effects and these amazing lighting effects that hadn't been seen at the time.
Rainbow Six 3: The first great online shooter on the Xbox and XBL. R63 had the tactical gameplay the series had always been known for and took it online and let players breach and clear around warehouses, villas, airports and more. One of my favorite modes was online terrorist hunt. Getting three other players and running around maps and coordinating around each room and corridor to wipe out all the AI terrorist was a blast and was tough as hell, too!
Crimson Skies: Imagine Star Wars Rogue Squadron or Star Fox 64 and a 1930’s steampunk like setting with dog fights and zeppelins over XBL. Well that was Crimson Skies in a nut shell. Pick your favorite plane with its unique arsenal and abilities and take them online and test your dogfighting skills. One of the games on Xbox and one of the best XBL games as well.
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic: Just when you thought Star Wars never gonna be a great universe outside the original trilogy, Bioware comes and knocks some sense into us with KOTOR. The chance to pick your side of the force and play all the way through the way you wanted was every Star Wars fans fantasy. We got two KOTOR games that were both great, but the original was still the best. Too bad we never got anymore, but at least it helped create Mass Effect.
Fable: Fable was another western RPG that let you choose how good or bad you wanted to be and reward you in different ways depending on your choices. Fable was a special RPG and a very important game for Xbox. Good or bad it was your journey on the way to becoming a Hero or Anti-Hero(?) and take back Albion as you age through your time in the world.
Full Spectrum Warrior: I don’t know how many people got to play this game/simulation that was developed in tandem with the US Army, but it was great. I’ve always appreciated games that made you think and plan your next move and tactically maneuver your way in clever ways. FSW was all that a more and the fact that the US Army helped make this to help recruits and soldiers in combat scenarios was incredible. It really was more sim than game, and you barley got to kill the enemies yourself, but the fun was getting your squad into the right positions and flank the enemies that out-manned and out-gunned you and taking them out without losing any of your squad members. A forgotten gem for sure.
