some old but still radical fandom terms to bring the heck back

the following are concepts that i quickly learned my way around when growing up in fandom, but that seem to have fallen out of use recently. i’d like to propose a revival of…

NOTP: a pairing that, for whatever reason, you simply cannot stand. it can be because the ship repulses you morally, or because you hate one of the characters, or love them both but despise their dynamic – or just because looking at it makes you uncomfortable, for whatever reason.

different from labeling something a “bad ship” in that it implies an entirely personal preference.

calling a ship your NOTP informs others that you really, really, REALLY dislike it, while also acknowledging that you don’t know what other people’s reasons are for shipping it, or what interpretations they may have that makes it work for them.

a cool way of avoiding stuff you hate while also not morally condemning thousands of complete strangers for liking it.

squick: similar to notp, but goes for anything, not just romantic pairings. something you just don’t like, either for specific reasons or just because it irrationally repulses you.

not as severe as a trigger in the sense that it doesn’t cause any extreme and potentially harmful reactions – it’s just something you’d rather not see, because it grosses you the fuck out. and that’s okay.

decent people respect other people’s squicks, while also remembering it’s cool for other people to like things they personally are squicked by.

this works as long as everyone agrees not to be dicks and shove stuff in people’s faces in unwarranted ways.

crackship: a ship that just doesn’t make any sense. there’s absolutely no chance that these characters would ever end up together.

perhaps they’ve never interacted. perhaps they are on opposite sides of a war. perhaps one of them died a thousand years ago. for whatever reason, there’s zero possibility of this becoming canon.

still, you’d like to see how they’d romantically mesh, to explore their dynamic or a what-if scenario – or maybe they’re just two characters you really like to imagine smooching one another.

the fact that it isn’t and never will be canon doesn’t matter, and can even be part of the appeal. it certainly does not invalidate the ship’s existence. the ultimate form of doing something just for fun.

these words all help describe the cool concept of doing stuff you enjoy, while also realizing others may be doing things you hate, but not in order to victimize you personally. live and let live! give people the benefit of the doubt! it’s a good time. we should all try it.

UK: Then they did. Young people didn't vote & older people did and now food prices are set to rise by 10% next year, benefits are being wildly slashed, something like 100k families to be affected and potentially facing homelessness, homophobic attacks are on the rise, racist hate crime on the rise - all because the far right got their validation. They got it through perceived apathy and voter abstinence. The right had their misplaced fury completely validated by the referendum and things are getting awful because of it.

Ideology is a fine thing but it's not going to help people next year who are looking at a decimated NHS, potentially privatised social services, housing benefits cuts, rising food costs, the continued death toll of our sick and disabled thanks to benefits cuts.

Maybe it doesn't feel like much of a choice when both parties are as bad as each other. But one represents a growing intolerance, a rising and terrifying far right that cannot be validated. They can't win because they won here and things are going from bad to worse. You're going to see people taking a trump win as permission for racist and hate fueled actions. You're going to see a trump win as your govt pandering even more to a far right electorate. I know it sounds like scare mongering but it's happening right here and now in the UK.

Last time I checked, HRC and the DNC weren’t promising to expel all Muslims from the USA, nor implying that they would take action if the election didn’t go their way. But sure, they’re the fear mongerers and we’re all servants of Imperialism for preferring them to Trump.

From the UK: please for the love of god don't repeat our mistake. So many young voters didn't turn out for the Brexit referendum and hateful racism won the day and now we're fucked based on the opinions of 37% of the electorate. You don't have to completely ideologically align with the candidate you choose. You don't have to think the sun shines out of their every orifice and they are capable of no wrongdoing ever but not voting could leave you stuck with the worse of your options.

Surviving Halloween with Psychosis

- The picture test: If you can’t tell if something is a hallucination or not, take a photo! If it shows up in the picture then you have a keepsake of that crazy creepy Halloween decoration. If not it’s a hallucination (or a vampire. No, i’m kidding it’s a hallucination.)

- Is some kid in mask causing paranoia? Ask them where they got their costume. Did they make it? How did they get the idea? Focusing on the person inside of the costume will help you remember that it’s just a person!

- Avoid haunted houses, haunted hayrides, ect. Actors will not stop scaring unless it’s an emergency, and I’ve yet to find a place that teaches actors how to deal with anything other than physical injuries. (I once met a haunted house actor who said causing a panic attack meant he was “doing his job right.”)

- There’s no shame in asking friends and relatives to avoid sending jump scare videos or anything else that could cause paranoia.

- Here are some tips on how to tell if a video is a screamer.

- (from freeasthepaperburns) Boggart it! If something is making you upset, make it silly. dance with the shadows, sing to the creepies, I bet if make a fish face at the scary face it’ll be a little less scary. I know this is harder than it sounds, but I’ve gotten better at it over the time, and find it helps!
