“Please give me a minute. It’s been a long day.”
“Right. This can wait. Didn’t realize you were, uh, busy.”
“I’m proud to be a mutant. Don’t let my regrets fool you.”
“Took me a long time to feel that way. Glad you were able to learn that earlier than me.”
wallxflxwer:
“I… Thank you, then. I never really thought I had any big kind of impact on anyone. Wallflower, right? Shrink into the background and stay there.” It’s what had always worked for Laurie. People didn’t expect more than that from her and maybe it was for the best. It stopped her from going too far. “I can’t really explain how I feel about the Cleanse. Guilty, sad, mad. It changes but it’s always a bad feeling and it never really goes away even though it wasn’t my fault.” It was the courtesy of Thanos, someone that Laurie had never even seen. “I think I would like that,” her voice was hesitant. “But you have to understand that some things are different. I’m different,” and she wasn’t even sure how. “Could we start slowly?”
“I should be the one saying thank you, sunshine. I never thought someone would have that kind of impact on me.” He wasn’t the best at emotional conversations but he was trying his best. He just listened as she went to explain about how the Cleanse has changed things for her. “I don’t know what exactly you went through with all of that but I can’t even imagine how much all of this is to process. While I can’t relate to what you went through I want you to know I’m here, rain or shine, to try and help you process all of that.” While he meant well he was still concerned that it sounded as if he was trying to make this all about himself. As she replied he hung on every word and could feel the flames dance in his chest in nervous anticipation. His ears raised as she said in what was his closest display to a smile as she said she would like to continue their whatever it was. He sealed the distance between them and took her hands in his cold ones. “I think we’ve both gone through a lot of changing since the cleanse. Taking things slow is probably the best thing for us.” He projected lightly, relieved that she even, more or less, accepted his offer.
wallxflxwer:
“It’s hard for me to believe that because I know them. Some of them. Or, I thought I did. Ben isn’t… He’s not like Reeva or the Frosts. I know what everyone is saying but I can’t make myself believe it.” She shook her head. “Maybe, but I’m not willing to use my powers in a way that would really let me do that.”
“Ben.” He repeated knowing full well who she was talking about. Someone who he considered a friend but certainly didn’t act like one anymore. Just another thing the Cleanse did to ruin his relationships. “You’re right about one thing. He isn’t like them.” He replied softly. “Then forget I even said anything about it.” He projected taking no offense to it. He was very sensitive to people not wanting to use their mutations for various things. He knew he hated when he had to use it for violence, even when that was its best use
adamantiiumbuilt:
“Why you’re a professor.”
It was hard not to take that comment personally. “Yeah, I know I didn’t really act like someone who’d be a professor, still don’t.” He projected with a shrug. “I’m professor because someone thought I could help the kids with the physical mutations and it turns out they were right. It’ hard looking at the mutants Colossus or Bobby who can just turn their powers on and off when you have a shark head or your missing half your face. I’m here to help them work through it.”
rcgves:
“Ah’ve been stuck accessorizin’ the same way for a while too. The gloves.” Rogue held up her covered hands. “It’s far past gettin’ old at this point.”
“Maybe switch to mittens. Bandaging myself up got old fast, I just needed to switch to winter wear.”
pclariis:
“You can take for it is now though. It’s not just because you’re a punk anymore.”
“Right. Now they just look because I’m wearing a scarf in the summer.” Jono projected wryly.
ofphoenixforces:
“Sounds like it could be most people then.” Jean remarked. “Charles used to have us help reconstruct the school. Once Erik and I lifted debris together.”
“Sounds like a one of a kind experienced.” Jono mused with slight intrigue. “I always got looked over for that. Wasn’t the sort they would be good at rebuilding.”
ofphoenixforces:
“I do. Trust me.” She paused to listen, red hair briefly covering her face when Jean glanced down. “I always thought that was mine too. It used to be. Now, I’m not totally sure how to ask for help. Jean Grey: the mutant with it all. How freaking prideful was that?”
“We’ve all got our sins.” Jono replied plainly. “Plus it’s not like we’re static. Always changing and all that. I know I’m going through a new phase, team, or name every six months.” He joked wryly.
corcontriitum:
“Which is really a mild way of putting it. As for the growing up, well, I guess only time will tell how everyone handles that.”
“I thinks that’s how growing up works in general.” His words lacked any bite or sarcasm.
vclkyriors:
“Not everything. Just Asgard.” Val corrected him. “Really, that’s what we all thought as well. Never thought I’d see the day when we wanted that arse to come and ruin things.”
“Right, my mistake.” Jono replied mainly out of obligation. “Yeah, never know when you’ll need someone like that.”
mvltiple:
“Woah, okay– harsh, Starsmore,” Jamie joked, feigning hurt, “but yeah- cheers.”
Seeing Jono eyeing his drink, Jamie’s chest ached. He couldn’t in a million years imagine going through what Jono’s experienced, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t try and ease the struggle in a different way. Setting his drink to the side, Jamie leaned toward his friend, inquisitive, but not overly-prodding.
“–Heard you and Laurie have been talking?”
Jono fought the urge to correct him on that by cheers he meant thanks, not some drinking sentiment. He was so used to people mistaking it state side by now he just let it pass.
Jono was not prepared for Jamies next words. His eyes quickly darted back to Jamie as he felt his flames almost flutter, however this was barely noticeable to the naked eye. “Yeah, and?” Being entirely honest he was nervous about what Jamie had to say next. Jono was a 26 year old man and professor and Laurie was barely a woman yet. He was fully ready to sit there and be chastised by Jamie.
touchkills:
“Yeah, but then I wouldn’t have anyone to argue with anymore,” he deadpanned, although still half joking.
“And what’s the point of living if you have no one to argue with?” His projection was nearly as emotionless as Kevin’s reply despite his mild amusement.
wallxflxwer:
Listening to him talk reminded Laurie of why she had started developing feelings for Jono in the first place. It reminded her of why she still had them, even if she didn’t know how to act on them or if they had a place in the way things were. Cheeks flushing even more, she ducked her head. “I wasn’t trying to – I mean, you were a little rough, no offense, but you’ve always seemed like a good person to me. I wanted to get to know you and I’m glad that I had the chance to before…” Yeah. Before the Cleanse. “How about you stop feeling bad about that explosion and I’ll try and stop feeling bad about turning into a pile of ash and stopping whatever we were. Not that I’m trying to be too bold or anything.” God, she was awkward but Laurie was trying. “Thank you, for telling me all of that.”
He nodded guiltily as she pointed out that he was rough but he was surprised to hear that she thought of him as a good person. Sure, Jono didn’t think he was a bad guy, he tried to do the write thing, but he never once considered himself as a good person. He felt like he was too self absorbed and never did enough to actually make a difference in someone’s life outside of blasting some baddie with his fire hole. As she went on he could feel his flames tumble inside of him, it was almost bubbly in a way, something he hadn’t felt in a few years. “I’m just being honest, sunshine. Thank you for sayin’ what you had to, it means a lot, but please don’t go blaming yourself for what happened with the cleanse. It’s not like you were the one that did it.” He felt his flames flip inside of him. “I know it’s been a while since then... But-” He trailed off. Why did he suck at this so bad? It wasn’t like he was some school boy anymore. “What would you say if, I don’t know...” Spit it out, Jono. “If we maybe picked up where we left off?” His flames were twirling around inside of him and he hated it. “Unless it’s too weird for you. I would understand.” Between their age difference only growing, the amount of time they spent apart, and the fact that he was still some no faced creep.
adamantiiumbuilt:
“You’re a professor. I do not know why not.”
“Why I’m a professor or why I’d give them detention?”
touchkills:
Kevin let out a slow exhale, wringing his hands in front of him, “I dunno, man. I can’t make you do anything.”
“True. You could always ask me to leave if you wanted to.”
mvltiple:
“I’m just pullin’ your leg, man. Take as much time as you need. Ain’t nobody here ‘cept me and my good friend Brandy,” Jamie held up a glass filled with amber colored liquid and shrugged, a grin playing at the corners of his mouth.
“With jokes like that I can see why you’re alone.” He was kidding but his tone didn’t do well to portray it. He eyed the brandy for a good moment thinking he’d give almost anything for a drink again. Looking back to Jamie as he took a seat. “Cheers.”
