The Harder They Come (1972) The Jamaican Cult Classic.

A story about the struggle of trying to make your dreams come true amongst a corrupt and poverty ridden society.

The film follows a talented musician Ivanhoe (played by reggae artist Jimmy Cliff) arriving in Kingston Jamaica to find work and make it in the music business. After signing an exploitative record contract from a shady producer Ivanhoe realizes the deep corruption within the Kingston music scene and turns to crime in order to make ends meet.

In the midst of his new life of crime, Ivanhoe becomes a local hero after killing three corrupt police officers. Making his once unknown song a hit on the radio as he’s on the run from the law.

MIDNIGHT TOKUSATSU

Tokusatsu (meaning “special filming” or “special effects”) a Japanese term used to describe live-action films and TV programs that heavily utilize practical special effects. Power Rangers was an American Tokusatsu for example.

Midnight Tokusatsu is a Tokusatsu series or film that contains darker or more mature content and tends to air in later hours of the night.

Quentin Tarantino took movie goers by storm with his hard boiled stories, off beat characters and snappy dialogue. A lot of his early work stemmed from one 500 page script, broken down into pieces for multiple films. All happening under the umbrella of what would become a wider “Tarantino Verse”.

This almost mythical script was written in 1987 with friend and co worker Roger Avary, while they worked as clerks at Video Archives. The script would go on to be the building blocks of Natural Born Killers, True Romance and some aspects of Pulp Fiction.

The original title “The Open Road” was an early screenplay of Roger Avary’s about an “odd couple relationship between an uptight business man and a wild female hitchhiker.”

Avary struggled on finishing his 50 page script and turned to his co worker Quentin for help. Quentin returned with over 500 handwritten pages, which Avary described as the Bible of pop culture.

In Roger Avary’s words Quentin Tarantino “transformed it into something much more brilliant that will eventually become the bits and pieces that make up the foundations of “True Romance”, “Natural Born Killers”, and “Pulp Fiction”.

At one point in Quentin’s script The character Clarence was writing a story while on the run across the country with his wife Alabama and that story within the story was Natural Born Killers.

Nights of Horror (1954)

The Notorious underground fetish comic secretly illustrated by Superman’s Co-Creator Joe Shuster.

After losing a long legal battle for the rights of Superman whilst developing sight problems. Joe Shuster fell on hard times as he wasn’t able to find work as an artist. Short on cash he was forced to do freelance work for an underground adult fetish zine “Nights of Horror”

Joe Shusters iconic art style can’t be missed, all the characters within Nights of Horror look oddly similar to early Superman comic strips. It’s like Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor are starring in a black and white art house porno.

Horror manga artist Junji Ito collaborated with Pokémon in 2014 for a Halloween event titled “KowaPoke” (scary Pokémon) The artwork was showcased on the Japanese Pokémon website and was featured in promotional materials leading up to the event.

The Fame Monster, 2010

Produced by Jim Hensons Creature shop. The monster served as a metaphor on the effects of fame and facing your fears.

The creatures design was based on an angler fish, a fish in which Gaga was terrified of as a child. At every show Gaga would face her fear and defeat the Fame Monster.
