There was a peaceful tranquility to early mornings that Colette loved. She enjoyed the nighttime, too, with its scintillating stars and warm lights from windows as everyone returned home, but dawn was special. There was a unique cleanness to the brisk air, and she drew strength from knowing that a new day was beginning.
It had been a little over a month since she had been instated as Meltokio's new Gym Leader, and while she loved the city, it didn't exactly love her back. Many had been expecting Zelos, a beloved native, to win the title, and they hadn't taken kindly to the foreigner who had "usurped his position". It didn't help that she was young, fresh out of Palmacosta's Academy for Trainers (as prestigious as the school was), and came off as... well, a bit unreliable, and maybe a little bumbling and naϊve.
Tripping on the steps up to the stage during the awards ceremony and falling flat on her face probably didn't incite the most confidence. Neither did her tendency to drop things while running errands in town. And for a person with such a slight frame, she certainly was capable of causing about as much damage to property as a rampaging rhyhorn, except it was never intentional in her case, and she was never angry (which really only made things worse).
Still, she already felt a strong attachment to the city, and took her duty to protect and serve its citizens very seriously. After all, it was also the hometown of her dearest human friend, her mentor, right-hand man, and the favorite at the Gym Leader Selection battle for Meltokio -- Zelos.
Sitting at the quaint round table she had set out near the front of her gym, Colette inhaled deeply and smiled as the first rays of the day broke over the horizon. After allowing herself to bask in the golden light for another minute, she drained her ceramic mug of a coffee roast about as blonde as her hair and stood.
"Shall we go back in, Vivi? Toto and Molly should wake up soon."
The sylveon that had been quietly curled up in the chair beside her leapt lightly to the ground, giving a soft chirrup that ended with a cat-like yawn.
Vivi had been Colette's first pokémon and first friend when they had met years ago, back when Vivi was still a stray eevee scrounging for scraps around Iselia, and Colette was a little ten-year-old who had a habit of running and hiding in the nearby forest when she was upset. The eevee, while wary of humans, was gentle by nature, and had cautiously approached the girl sniffling into her knees on the forest floor. The fact that the little girl also had a satchel that smelled of fresh bread and fruit probably helped lower her guard. And Colette, who had always had a soft spot for pokémon and those in need, fell in love, promptly lugging the ten-pound, scruffy furball home in her tiny arms.
She had picked up Toto, her togepi-now-togekiss in a similar way, rescuing the timid runt of the litter -- well, daycare -- from being rolled back and forth like a ball between two larger pokémon. Things had been reversed with Molly, her third and last partner; the brave, deceptively docile-looking mawile had jumped to the rescue with snapping jaws when Colette had accidentally tripped and fallen on a strangely aggressive makuhita. When the mawile witnessed the girl stumble on a few more rocks and slide down several dusty slopes in the dark cave, she had worriedly taken it upon herself to lead the girl out to safety,
and the two had been friends ever since. Fast-forward to the present, and the group was now an odd, but very happy, family.
As the sun drew higher into the sky, Colette hummed peaceably as she went about her morning routine. After washing up and having breakfast with her pokémon, the four would do a light, preparatory cleaning of the gym, and then she would settle down with paperwork and requests from the townspeople at her desk. Challengers generally didn't begin arriving until later in the day, so many of her mornings were spent sorting through stacks of actual requests (generally just things like, "can you get my ball off the roof?" or "could you pick up these groceries and deliver them to xxx?") and anonymous messages that usually read along the lines of "you cheated, you're weak, resign immediately". Thankfully, the number of requests were finally beginning to catch up with the angry messages, which left her more time to actually try and tackle the tasks at hand.
She had just finished sorting the papers by priority when a high-pitched, telltale creak announced someone's arrival. Mentally making a note to pick up some plumber's grease and take care of that squeaky hinge, her face brightened as a familiar mane of red appeared, and she hopped to her feet as her favorite (and only) Gym Trainer sauntered through the door.
"Zelos! Good morning. Did you sleep well? There's some apple juice and berry muffins in the refrigerator if you haven't eaten. I also made a fruit salad and fruit sandwiches for lunch if you'd like those instead!"
