I promised to share the wips awhile ago and it slipped my mind oops; better late than never I guess.
As a “contest” entry it’s also pretty important for documentation I suppose (in this age of ai slop yknow). I mainly share wips retroactively because I never really think to do so while I'm actually making the thing.
Under a readmore for length.
Anyways, as mentioned before the timelapse attached to the original post doesn’t cover the full process because I messed up the formatting twice; once for sizing correction and once for color gamut correction.
[first and second sketch side by side]
The original plan really was to draw all these characters normally, and while that’s doable in theory, do I really want to draw 27 full-detail characters of very complicated designs within a deadline? Respectfully, hell nah. I got the idea to turn them into floofs (which are in-game collectible plushies) after drawing Gulphagor a bit too cute, I revamped everything to match his energy.
[Figure 3: some examples of floofs in-game; Figure 4: the offending Gulphagor]
I had the false hope that this would make it much easier (it wasn’t), but I still managed. The real issue is the majority of these characters have not been plushified in an official manner, so I had to wing it and custom design my own by eyeballing the proportions of known floofs. I drafted the designs in a separate file and posed them like dolls (haha) for my redone sketch.
[figure 5: compiled sketches of most of the floofs I had to make]
Lining and coloring was for the most part pretty typical, the only “exciting” parts were the use of photographs and free use stock photo textures during the color process. For the floofs themselves I chose a few alternating textures, mostly knits to match the in-game models, and turned it into a “color burn” layer that more or less transferred the texture cleanly onto the color and shading. It was really tedious, almost like recoloring everything a second time. I originally wanted to photograph my own variously plushies’ fabric for this but sadly it would’ve taken too much time, as it would need to be approached a bit differently. Layer limit was my greatest enemy so many of them were merged near the end, so I replicated it on a different doodle below.
[figure 6: zoomed in snippet of the actual piece with layers shown, 7: quick method visualization]
The background ended up being a chaotic overdone mishmash and is the reason I added the bold white outline to most of the subjects. It is a gradient of blue > purple > red to represent the three parts of the quests (the old peace > the dark refractory > the devils triad), and I drew in all of the details to match. I spent like two hours drawing over 100 of those flowers and I questioned my sanity. The center and adjoined ring are actually two decorative plates I had lying around, colored and manipulated to fit into the background. I was having trouble coloring fire in a satisfying way, so the fires of descendia of the bottom half are partly crafted from the scraggly faux fur of a plush of Arkveld monster hunter.
[Figure 8: the raw images used (spliced together to conserve space on the post), Figure 9: picture of the objects together in real space.]
I believe I covered all the bases on this so hope it was at least a little interesting? Maybe too wordy and over-explainy? I haven’t drawn a lot of the characters from this game outside of my silly little ocs but it was a fun challenge regardless.
My Tennocon 2026 submission piece got done on time! This took me so long, and I repainted it so many times, but I'm really happy with how it turned out
EDIT 2/7/26: This piece was selected as one of the winners, I feel incredibly honored! If someone is going to Tennocon in person, I'd be incredibly grateful if you could snap a photo of it in the showcase!
Process under the cut
And as a little extra, the versions of Albrecht with his hat (that I banished to the layer shadow realm) and Loid without his oculus.
I separate individual things into different layers a lot and often I render stuff underneath, especially faces, in case I decide to move things. I also just wanted to draw Albrecht with wavy hair again so hat yeetage it was lol
Title from one of my favorite songs! This is my pride themed piece that I've been working on for the past month.
Wallpaper cuts and high resolution file will be sent to patrons as part of July's rewards!
You can also get a print of this illustration now at my shop!
Some personal rambles about this artwork (Lyon KIM spoilers below):
The idea of this artwork was formed way back in February, when I reached the resolution part of Lyon's KIM convo regarding the Chains of Harrow event.
When I started warframe, Harrow is just one of the many warframes I skimmed past on the wiki pages, yet the untold story of him and Rell's joint sacrifice implied in CoH is what truly placed him into my favorite till today.
Lyon's recollection of the duo accompanying him in his flawed childhood to me is a callback of the core message of WARFRAME: the link of love and companionship always exists, amongst the deemed inhumane (the warframes), the traumatized (tennos), and every person suffered for merely being different judged by the norm-forced standards, in both the fictional and real world.
Due to my increasing workload these days, I have spent far less time making art because of my own mental fatigue. I can only manage to finish this piece by pushing myself against the Tennocon submission deadline, so there are likely many mistakes and imperfections in this work, and details that I cannot implement into the work on time.
But at least I am happy to be able to finish this, and I think that's enough for me.
