Michael Robinavitch and Jack Abbot have known each other for decades now.

What to Expect:

Chapters are generally between 1,500 to 4,000 words (give or take). This fic is a slower burn than I'm used to writing so thank you for your patience between scenes where they get freaky with it. It's also a blend of angst, fluff and smut. I haven't written fan fiction in over three years so I might be a little rusty. I'm keeping the plot flexible at the moment so I don't accidentally pigeonhole myself into an ending I might not love once it's done. I more-so want to explore themes and conflicts in the relationship between Jack and Robby. I am not going to be writing Robby as having rippling washboard abs because that is a middle-aged man and I just know he's got a paunch (lemme at him). The AU this story exists in is virtually just a gentle left turn from the original series (unless of course season 3 turns out to be about Robby and Jack finally figuring that they're old man gay for each other have gay sex about it in which case it might not be too far off um..). I'm going to be including a couple of flashback scenes every so often but I don't want to overuse them.

Chapter Release Schedule:

I'm currently working a part time job so a lot of my chapter release schedule is going to depend on if I have the capacity to write after work or during my breaks. Thankfully, inspiration has yet to run dry because I literally cannot stop myself from writing this fucking fic. I shit you not, I accidentally pulled an all nighter writing a sex scene two days ago.

This story is a work in progress, by which I mean there are still occasional edits being done. This may happen if I re-read a chapter and realise I need to fix things up or I want to correct my wording. I do also name Jack's late wife Laura (the og haunter of narratives) but if it turns out that the writers give her a different name, I'll go back and fix that. I should also add that while I'm trying to use American grammar, spelling and phrases to make the writing feel more natural to the show, I may slip up because I grew up with UK English and not US English. My spelling of some words (Like realise/realize) may not always be consistent. All of the relevant tags will be cited in the fic's bio on AO3.

Apparently a lot of people get dialogue punctuation wrong despite having an otherwise solid grasp of grammar, possibly because they’re used to writing essays rather than prose. I don’t wanna be the asshole who complains about writing errors and then doesn’t offer to help, so here are the basics summarized as simply as I could manage on my phone (“dialogue tag” just refers to phrases like “he said,” “she whispered,” “they asked”):

“For most dialogue, use a comma after the sentence and don’t capitalize the next word after the quotation mark,” she said.

“But what if you’re using a question mark rather than a period?” they asked.

“When using a dialogue tag, you never capitalize the word after the quotation mark unless it’s a proper noun!” she snapped.

“When breaking up a single sentence with a dialogue tag,” she said, “use commas.”

“This is a single sentence,” she said. “Now, this is a second stand-alone sentence, so there’s no comma after ‘she said.’”

“There’s no dialogue tag after this sentence, so end it with a period rather than a comma.” She frowned, suddenly concerned that the entire post was as unasked for as it was sanctimonious.
