I wish I was a vampire. It would create a wide range of scary new problems for me to have to deal with but at least I'll have fangs

constantly making airy offhand comments to my preferred younger son about how he’s next in line for the throne after his brother but he still hasn’t killed my detested firstborn for me. kids these days have no fucking initiative.
I keep sending them off on “boar hunts” together and wouldn’t you know? they keep coming back after with big smiles and boar heads and the unmistakable stench of brotherly camaraderie. what sick sad days are these!
two types of advisors
Pretty absurd that people can even get food poisoning. That food gets crushed up and then pushed into a pouch full of hydrochloric acid. Bonkers that that isn't a more foolproof sterilisation system.
I guess it's reasonable that some of the pathogen-produced toxins can survive it but still. I'd expect it to take out more of those too.
Humans: I put all my food in a bag of sterilising juice!
Pathogens: Guess I'll just have to adapt to the sterilising juice then
The vulnerability comes from the fact that we cannot use sterilising juices that would dissolve us. The existence of organic something that could survive sterilising juice is both an exploitable weakness and non-negotiable requirement
That's why we do the fire part outside the body I guess
OK, so I think there's a fairly decent chance that Derin already knows this, but there's a pretty well-established line of thought that doing the fire part outside of the body was a significant driver of the development of human intelligence.
Like, there's considerable debate over exactly how significant it was, but it's generally understood that the digestive system and the brain are two of the biggest items in the body's energy budget, and that cooking* before eating means less energy is lost to digestion, thus creating a surplus that can be moved to another line item in the budget.
And our digestive system is unusually light-duty for our overall body size, compared to other primates. The human digestive tract is shorter, overall, that would be predicted based on other primates, and doesn't do as much breaking-down and fermenting and so forth as other mammals' bodies do (even counting only other species that, like us, are not set up to handle cellulose). Which makes us a lot more vulnerable to food-borne pathogens--a dog can eat garbage off the ground and wash it down with puddle water and 95% of the time be fine, because their digestive system is set up to do that sort of thing.
Ours isn't, because some million or two years ago, we outsourced part of our digestive process. By doing the fire part outside the body.
(*In this type of analysis, "cooking" includes all heat-based methods, plus some additional techniques, like grinding and fermenting, that also cause a food item to give up its stored energy more easily.)
