Tw: light cursing, talks of bullying?
Anyways i havenβt written anything in a while except like yesterday but this took forever and i felt like it came out super long but thereβs not a ton of romance however im going to write a part two β
Steve has always been good at doing hair. Heβd gotten good at styling his own hair in high school, then heβd began helping Dustin with his hair too around that time so he had a little experience with curls too, then a few of the boys on his younger softball teams have longer hair they havenβt quite learned how to pull back themselves yet so he has to do it.
His cousins had alot of girls when he grew up so heβd learned how to do their hair too, it Steve knew how to do it wasnβt a big deal. Well thatβs until you come stumbling into the parent teacher meeting. Steveβs been doing this weird part time job with elementary English and physical education so he could coach the elementary school kids. He isnβt ecstatic about it but the kids are sweet and heβs pretty good at it so he doesnβt complain does his hours at the elementary school and on Tuesdays and Thursdays he gets to the high school by eleven and does his two sex ed classes before making his way back to the elementary school for his PE classes. Itβs busy but he enjoys it.
Youβre a mess carrying the sweetest looking toddler on your hip as your son whoβs just made seven drags you to Steveβs room and he recognizes him from his third grade class. Your son is brilliant a bright little thing, he loves writing and every time without fail if Steve gives his students prompts about their role models or heroβs he answers with something about you and how you juggle it all taking care of him and his sister. Your kids are both sweet really and you are to but God lately itβs been tough.
βI am so sorry, I was trying to get them ready and the clock on our stove I guess itβs an hour behind and-β you stop letting out a breath, βIβm so sorry againβ, you mumble a bit embarrassed but Steve doesnβt seem to mind just casually shrugging his shoulders like itβs no big deal.
βI didnβt have many other meetingsβ, and you canβt help but feel relieved as you nod and smile as you set down your daughter. Charlie your sweet son is immediately tugging his sister off to show her his desk. Charlotte whoβs just barely made the cut off for preschool seems ecstatic that her brother uses the big kid desks.
βHeβs a good kidβ ,Steve startsβ¦but of course you already know that. You nod. Your son really is a god child. Heβs got good grades, heβs respectful, heβs sweet to his little sister, he plays softball, he reads booksβ¦ βitβs just some of the boys his ageβ¦β Steve pauses and your eyes flick up to him itβs one of those pauses that implies things most people think you should know, βyou knowβ¦β he hesitates.
Youβre immediately crossing your arms, βNo I donβt knowβ youβre immediately defensive is he implying something is wrong with your child? That YOUβRE doing something wrong? Youβve tried so fucking hard and you even moved houses to get your kid into a better school so if heβs trying to imply something about your parenting-
βThey pick at himβ itβs the type of response that shuts you up. Your eyes are wide. You just stand there blinkingβ¦ βitβs stupid shit about dads and stuffβ¦β it sounds like heβs trying to be relatable with the cursing as you uncross your armsβ¦well you couldnβt really fix thatβ¦you glance at your feet. Charlie had mentioned the boys at school were talking about their dads and how everyone thought their dad would obviously be the fastest or the strongest and heβd been singled out immediately by the other boysβ¦
βNo, yeah I uhmβ¦I got that, he mentioned it the other night but I didnβt think it was at a level where it needed to be brought upβ¦β youβd never dealt with this before, Charlieβs always gotten along well with his peers so you said what your mother would have told you, βjust brush it offβ and of course youβd forgotten just how entirely unhelpful that kind of advice is to a childβ¦
βHis grades are greatβ He doesnβt really know what else to tell youβ¦your kid is good, heβs got amazing grades, heβs just been quiet latelyβ¦heβs spent his recesses quietly sitting on the sidewalk because the other boys wonβt let him play, sometimes if Steve is around your son will make his way into his classroom under the guise of wanting to finish his assignments early but he usually just draws.
βRightβ your hands brace on your hips as you glance at the desk where your sonβs report card is. A few teacher comments from non-homeroom teachers just mention how good his grades are but that he wonβt work with peers or that he doesnβt socialize much. He does fine talking with the boys on his softball teamβ¦why is this any differentβ¦
βWell I mean you know him, he talks with the boys on the softball team he had a sleepover with Lisaβs boys this weekendβ a set of fraternal twin boys your son was quite fond of, they lived out of town, went to a different school but they got on the team by being from the same countyβ¦so did a lot of the teamβ¦your son was one of two boys who was actually from Hawkinβs elementary school majority of the other boys on the team were from other schools in the countyβ¦
So when the next practice comes you quietly sit in the little bleachers as you give Steve a quiet wave. You set Charlotte down beside you but sheβs immediately up asking her brother about where heβs going. You watch your son go to the dugout and he immediately begins talking with, of course, boys from a few counties over.
You let out a quiet sigh as Steve waves you over. You quietly move yourself to the little fence beside the dugout where Steve is currently pulling a few of the boys hair up.
βTheyβve been talking all weekβ Steve mumbles as he turns the boy infront of himβs head. βwhatβd you want a pony tail?β He mumbles as he pony tails the kidβs hair and motions for the other boy to come so he can pull that oneβs hair back tooβ¦shockingly their parents still donβt put it tight enough to hold more then a few minutes.
βCan you braid my hair Mr. Steve?β Your brows furrow at the tiny little voice as you glance down.
βCharlotte whatβre you doing in there? Come out I told you Iβd figure out how to do braidsβ¦β But of course you know sheβs followed her brother into the dugout because what else do your kids do, but he just laughs softly as he gently turns her so she faces the field as he starts braiding her pretty curlsβ¦he makes it look really easy and you huff quietly
βIs that the one from the elementary school?β You motion to the little boy holding up a bat swinging at pitches the other coach is throwing, thatβs the kid whoβs told all of your sonβs class that he didnβt have a father.
βLittle shitβ you mumble under your breath as you glance to Charlotte, who is overjoyed to be finally getting the precious braid she wants done of courseβ¦
You let out a quiet sigh as you eye the kid as he makes his way back to the dugout, βwhereβd you learn to do that?β You ask Steve quietly as he tells the next kid on his list to get on deck while he ties off your daughterβs hair. You never quite mastered braiding and God did your sweet girl ask for them constantly.
βI had cousins growing upβ¦could teach you if you wantβ itβs a casual offer but heβs giddy inside.
Guysβ¦thereβs litterally no romance because I got carried away with like setting the scene and I guess dynamicsπ§I did debate scrapping it but I plan to write a part two tomorrow with romance ykπ§anyways I want requests for steve if anyone has any please let me knowπanyways just read it back it wasnβt that long anywaysβ¦
