I was wondering what he would see with the clock before that happens, since Vecna's victims see something that carries guilt for them. Maybe he'll see all his friends turn against him permanently, or just something that shows his guilt of hiding his feelings and many people possibly hating him for it.

"Every little thing the reflex does / leaves you answered with a question mark" could reflect the confusion in the fandom/in his life around his true feelings, which are yet to be revealed.
"Don't wanna be around when this gets out" sounds like something someone would say when they have a secret that is close to being revealed. Considering it's the 80's, not wanting people to know you're queer is very reasonable.

He is a vital part in finding out where Will is in this season, continuing to investigate even after almost all of Hawkins believes that Will is dead. In season 2, Will is with the group again, but it is Mike that realizes he wasn't himself. He was one of the only people Will recognized when he was possessed in the hospital. Time after time, Mike saved Will.
"If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting" brings to mind Noah's accidental confirmation that s5 pt2 picks up where episode 4 left off, and the theory that Will is going to fall to the ground and Mike/Joyce will run to him.

What I think the purpose of this song being on here is for the thought of nostalgia, meaning that no matter how much these characters grow up throughout the show they're still the same deep down.

He does show immediate regret after saying this, being in the heat of the moment. They were both hurt by the argument, Will's frustration from Mike only spending time with El plus his feelings for him resulting in him breaking down. They later find him in the woods, destroying Castle Byers with an axe in hand.
Before Will's acceptance arc in S5 p1, he almost had as much internalized homophobia as Mike. He loved him, but thought Mike would never like him back because of El. He knew that even if things didn't work out with her, his fear of accepting his true feelings for Mike would prevent him from doing anything. He knows that Mike is oblivious, so he very likely doesn't realize that Will likes him, but the thought of him finding out the truth is enough for him to attempt to distance himself and keep mike and el together.
Maybe what Mike is starting to realize halfway through this new season is that he feels different around Will. We already knew that, and maybe they both knew something was different about the two of them, but the puzzle pieces are connecting for him. He knows nobody else but Will makes him feel that way, and nobody ever will come close. He feels the burning inside of him, but has to accept himself the same way Will did.

Realistically, Will should have died in the Upside down as a 12 year old. However, it wasn't his time yet.

However, I am not the average viewer, and I know damn well whoever may be reading this (if anyone is) isn't either. We know Mike was lying in his speech to El, supported by the fact he said some bs about falling in love with her the moment he met her. We know he's lying because when he first met her, he was searching for Will in the woods with Lucas and Dustin, and his first reaction to seeing El was "Uhhh that's not Will".
