I need to talk about Tooru again because he’s such a dynamic character. He’s drawn to Hori because she’s pretty and popular and she’s a mystery to him. It’s more on the superficial side and in the beginning, you think that’s all there is to him. He’s like every teenage boy.

But, after heartbreak, you can see him start to develop a relationship mirroring Hori and Miyamura’s with Yuki. It becomes about quiet understanding, incessant nagging, teasing, letting her cry and hide her face when she’s embarrassed. He never makes a fuss. In fact, he goes out of his way to cover for her. It’s obvious that that was how he was brought up. From the little clip we saw of how much Ishikawa’s wallet from his father meant to him, and by the fact that a son’s behavior of women is inextricably influenced by how present and healthy his father is—Ishikawa was definitely the correct pairing for Yuki. He’d treat her well.

I’ve been watching Horimiya Piece with my friend and she’s only seen Horimiya from its anime adaption. I feel like a lot of people missed a lot from the series because it got dumbed down into a seasonal 12-ep romcom. There’s a lot more nuance to it and some of the natural flow and development was lost by adapting most of the remaining chapters into a second season.

You ever think how Yuki and Tooru probably didn’t last out of high school? I mean the way Tooru has a quality that’s so close to the quality Yanagi has and was reason she rejected Yanagi in the first place?

I’m talking about being flashy. Whether it’s in appearance or money, it’s a complete turn off for her. It’s not a bad thing; it’s just a preference. Which is why the scene where Yuki figures out Tooru is rich is so important. Because you can see her start to recede. But, Tooru trusts her enough not to.

And Tooru’s the only one that sees that and sees all of her just like her sister but has no issue with it. I do think his easygoing and understanding nature is exactly what she needed and it almost doesn’t matter that he has what she’s naturally inclined to avoid. Maybe it could work out. I don’t know.

Yuki would definitely go through loopholes to break up with him, if you can call it that. It’s still a situation ship type of relationship and I don’t see Yuki addressing the “what are we?” question anytime soon. Tooru would just keep assuming they’re actually together. But, she did go out of her way to trouble Tooru to help her with Yanagi. So, it’s not like the reason she can’t confront her issues directly is because she doesn’t want to inconvenience people.

Something stops her. She’s scared to confront her feelings head on. She’s okay with sitting with those feelings and letting them destroy her if it means she doesn’t have to address them. I don’t think she fully understands the reason herself because she’s always gotten what she wanted one way or another at a certain level.

I want to trust in Tooru and her. But, I’m skeptical, just like she always is. It could be she ends up staying with him. I can’t help but see her becoming deeply unhappy with his lifestyle and economic status. She’d never say it though.
