Remembering Listen to the Land at Epcot Center
Listen to the Land was a opening day attraction at the EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World Resort on October 1, 1982, and was the original version of The Land pavilions boat tour. Listen to the Land was narrated by a live cast member at the head of the boat. The tour began by traveling through the “Symphony of the Seed” where light and sculpted elements would give the illusion of seeds and plants growing while the iconic song “Listen to the Land” was played. The boat then traveled through different harsh environments, such as a rainforest, a desert, and an American prairie; in which it was once difficult for man to survive because of the difficulty of producing food. Eventually you reach the American farm house, showing that man was able to tame the prairie to make farm land. You then would travel through the greenhouses which were named (in ride-through order): Tropics House, Aquacell, Desert House, Production House, and Creative House. In the Creative House you viewed a small exhibit of NASA hydroponic growing units, which were developed for use on extended-length space journeys. Listen to the Land sailed from 1982 to 1993 when it was renamed to Living with the Land. The name change also brought new beginning and ending scenes, a new soundtrack, and new narrations
