The Duchess and the Devil
Ugh, oh. I finished Retribution. Oh. I’m so glad I had some spoilers; I don’t know how people without any warning held it together (Archie’s not even a fav of mine and ohhh, it all broke my heart). And Wellard. That was just mean.
But there were some wonderful moments throughout. So, I guess a celebration for getting through Horatio’s adventures on the Renown. What are your favorite moments from Mutiny and Retribution?
Oh yeah, that with Archie broke my heart too. No matter how many times I've seen it. As you mentioned, Mutiny and Retribution have a lot of great moments. In Mutiny I find it interesting to see how the lieutenants acted when they realized that Captain Sawyer was mentally unstable. Bush seemed a bit, how shall I say, arrogant at the beginning, but by the end of the episode he joins the other three and you realize he's not like that after all. In Retribution I liked the collaboration between Horatio, Archie and Bush the best. The scene where they jump off the cliff and Bush shouts, "I can't swim!" is great. And I have to say, even though I don't like Captain Sawyer, I ended up feeling sorry for him.
William Bush in Hornblower: Duty
Horatio Hornblower in Retribution
Happy 50th birthday, Ioan Gruffudd 🎊
Now he could play Lord or Admiral Hornblower.

Hornblower: The Frogs and the Lobsters
Hey! I just finished the 4th Hornblower film! I know I’m slow; I’m pacing myself, because I’m enjoying them so much and I don’t want it to end. While the 4th wasn’t my favorite, I wasn't really expecting it to be, after the first 3 seemed jam-packed to perfection, so I wasn’t too disappointed. And there was still lots to like!
But I wanted to celebrate my milestone! : ) So my ask is: what is one highlight from each of the first four films for you? Fun moments, interesting characters, aspects of the plot you liked. Doesn't have to be your absolute favs, just things that stand out to you that help make Hornblower as great as it is!
Hello! I'm glad you're enjoying Hornblower so far. I am convinced that you will also like the next episodes. Your question is very difficult because there are really many great moments and characters in every episode. But I will try to keep it short.
Let's start with the first episode.
The Even Chance: What I particularly like about this episode is that we gets to know Horatios character. At first you think he is a clumsy and insecure Midshipman and you might think he's wrong in the Royal Navy. But the longer you watch, the more you realize that there is more of him. He is clever, brave, cunning and kind. In this episode you also get a good insight into everyday life on a ship at the end of the 18th century, which I find very interesting. A scene I particularly like is when Styles thanks Horatio for taking care of their colleague during the fight and salutes. This scene shows that Horatio has won the respect and loyalty of his crew. I love Horatio and his little crew (Styles, Matthews, Oldroyd and Finch).
The Examination for Lieutenant: In this episode I like the quarantine that Horatio and his crew have to spend on the Caroline. I hope the name of the ship is correct. Horatio has to deal with different situations and show that he is up to the task. And bonus: his straw hat. I love it! I also really like the ending scene with Captain Pellew. For me, this is where this "father-son" relationship between the two begins.
The Duchess and the Devil: The best thing about this episode is Archie's return to the series. I love the friendship between him and Horatio so much. It's so touching how Horatio cares for him in this episode. I also like Kitty Cobham. I like her cheeky and upbeat nature, which brings a bit of variety. The friendship between her and Horatio is very nice. And this episode also shows the crew's loyalty and respect for Horatio again.
The Frogs and the Lobsters: A very sad episode. I found the short love story between Horatio and MarMariette very heartbreaking. And when Horatio cried in front of Captain Pellew at the end, I also found it very touching. It shows how much the whole mission had weighed on him. Major Lord Edrington is one of my favourite characters in this episode. I wish he had shown up more. And the ending scene, when Horatio stands at the top of the masthead, is so great. He smiles again and the episode doesn't end as sadly as you first thought. But I always ask myself why Horatio isn't afraid of heights here.
So these are my favourite moments and my impressions from these four episodes. I have to mention that what I love about Hornblower is that every episode shows the development of Horatio and all the stories are great and exciting. Interesting and different characters appear in each one and shape the entire series in their own way. You also learn a lot about life in the Royal Navy at that time. The costumes are very authentic and the sea battles are fantastically recreated. In short: a masterful series. ⚓️💙
Well, I didn't really keep it brief. I'm sorry, but when I start writing, I just write and write 😅
This short scene is just too adorable. Seeing how caring Horatio is for Archie 🥹

Hey! Very new to the Hornblower fandom but excited! It was Tumblr that made me buy the series to check it out (I also had seen and loved Ioan Gruffudd in other things). I've only watched the first 3 movies so far but they're soooooo good.
I'm curious; what got you started on watching/reading Hornblower?
First: Welcome to the Hornblower fandom!⚓️ I hope you will like the next episodes too.
I've always found the history of the Navy in the 17th and 18th centuries very interesting. I especially love Naval paintings. Anyway, I was wondering if there were any good films or series about it. First I watched Master & Commander and really enjoyed it. Then I stumbled upon Hornblower and I was totally blown away by the first episode. And to this day this enthusiasm has continued and I enjoy watching it again and again. 💙
I just want to say how wonderful it is that the Hornblower fandom is still alive. ⚓️💙
One of my favourite things: Horatio with his straw hat
Hornblower: The Examination for Lieutenant
I don't know if it's just me, but when I see Horatio's hair, I want to pull the tied bow that holds his hair together.
When you tell a joke and nobody laughs:
Poor Horatio 🙈
Enjoy this photo of Horatio and forget that tomorrow is Monday.
Wish I was here...
Can we take a moment to remind ourselves why Bush is such a great character?
