he says, blood soaking his beard

as she eats his eyes

"Please, sir, let me out,"

a voice rose on the cables

elevator shaft

like a bonfire 

the top floor burned in the night

luxury hotel

darkened passageways

below the shining city

howling underground

the fridge is empty

but the microwave is full

clumps of clotted hair

we boarded the bus 

and rode for nineteen hours 

to an empty field

the airplane cabin 

slowly filled with yellow gas 

as we dropped to earth

for this year's taxes

I claimed thirteen deductions

for those I murdered

we can't go outside

until the rain stops falling 

and the moon returns
