The Butterflies of House Velaryon 🦋
In 170 AC, Malentys Velaryon, cousin to the Lord of Driftmark, married Leilanda of Naath, the daughter of a Naathi trader. Theirs was a love match, and the marriage yielded two children, Mae and Aethan.
Their eldest was Mae Velaryon, lady-in-waiting to Princess Daenerys of Dorne and later the Lady of Uplands. Mae was sent to court in King's Landing as a girl due to her proximity in age to the princess and the historical bonds between houses Targaryen and Velaryon. Mae proved a cheerful and amicable child, quick to make friends among the many colorful characters in the court of Aegon IV.
When Prince Baelor married Jena Dondarrion, she took with her to court her cousin Yvette as a lady-in-waiting. Yvette and Mae quickly became close, and rumors swirled that something deeper than mere friendship blossomed between the girls.
In 187 AC, Princess Daenerys was married to Prince Maron Martell of Dorne. Mae accompanied her lady to the far-off kingdom and stayed there for some years, enjoying the sun and taking a number of female lovers without fear of consequence. However, she came to miss the company of Yvette Dondarrion and longed to return to the northern kingdoms.
With Daenerys' blessing, Mae eventually left Dorne to be married to Ser Lucas Mullendore, heir to Uplands. As it happens, her dear friend Yvette had also come to the Reach by this time, marrying Ser Androw Pommingham. Mae and Yvette reunited and, rumor has it, became paramours to each other.
Mae gave birth to twins in 192 AC, a boy named Matthew and a girl named Lianna. Lianna was later betrothed to Orland Pommingham, the eldest son of Yvette.
Their second child of Malentys and Leilanda was Aethan Velaryon, captain of the ship Gossamer Wind. Aethan was adventurous and restless since childhood, accompanying his father on sea voyages as soon as he could walk, and never marrying. For his personal arms, he took the sigil of House Velaryon quartered with a gold butterfly on black, in honor of his mother.
While on a visit to White Harbor, he met a boy near his age named Benjen Waterman, the third son of his house. He was soon to be married to a lady by the name of Ylsa Flint of Widow's Watch. The two boys bonded while spending the day together in the city, and Aethan later met Ylsa at the seat of House Manderly.
It is said that Aethan fell in love with both Benjen and Ylsa that day, and the two of them both loved him in return. After their marriage, Aethan would return to Wildwater frequently throughout his life, and the three of them were quite happy together.
As it happens, both of Benjen's elder brothers took no wives and had no issue. The first joined the Night's Watch and the second died young of an illness, so Benjen and Ylsa unexpectedly found themselves at the head of House Waterman. They bore a pair of twins named Steffon and Katalyn in 198 AC, who became the heirs to Wildwater.
Ylsa also gave birth to a third child - a girl with pale brown skin and silver-white hair. Named Berona Snow, she was clearly the daughter of Aethan, but was raised at Wildwater alongside her half-siblings and was loved no less by Benjen, for he adored both her parents deeply and had no qualms with her birth.
