Happy New Years and I will (hopefully) see you next year for another event like this! :)
Dude I laughed out loud when I saw that I got you as my spikerâa) because we were just getting to be friends and making stuff for people you know if always really fun!! and b) because i fuckin knew I was gonna get to get down with the OT3 SO! Hereâs as much of the domestic prompts you submitted as I could fit in one picture!!Â
Tsukki finally finished knitting that huge scarf the night before and when Yachi found out that next morning, she got so excited cuz heâd been working on it for weeks and she really wanted to see if it would fit the three of them butâYamaguchi is a really late, and really grumpy sleeper. Not to be stopped, however, they whipped up some hot chocolate to calm the early-waking-rage and snuggled in at the kitchen table: no one remembered it was Christmas morning till the hot water jug had run out, and Yamaguchi had fallen back asleep in his chair. :D
I think this might not have been exactly what you requested but I did put in lots of cuteness and fluffiness, just with a little more preface and a fantasy twist. I hope you still like it and I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!
Happy Holidays,
Your setter, Jamie
All That Glitters
The glitter coating Kurooâs skin rubs off on his clothes, turning the edges of his suit a dusty gold. He doesnât mind though. He wonât be the only mortal attending the Midnight Princeâs Ball. Although the whole kingdom is invited, itâs tradition to attend a Fairy Ball masquerading as a fairy yourself.
The golden glitter isnât the only lengths Kuroo went to. His hair, for once, is styled into perfect peaks and valleys and when the light hits it, strands of dark red are highlighted amidst the natural black of his hair. His suit matches the highlights as subtle maroon designs crawl up his cuffs and down from his collar. Shining bangles jingle on his wrists and ankles, chiming a symphony every time he steps. Lastly, he finishes the display with one silver contact, making his left eye gleam. He leaves his right eye his natural near-black color, partly to unsettle other people and partly to mark himself as a mortal. He has never been ashamed of his humanity and he doesnât plan to start now.
Kuroo pauses at the entrance, looking down the curved staircase to the crowd below. Heâs arrived just in time to see Prince Kageyama start the ball. The prince lives up to his namesake. His hair is midnight black and his suit is dark as night. Kuroo feels the corners of his mouth twitch into a smirk.
The boy Prince Kageyama plucks from the guests is clearly human. The orange haired boy looks just as shocked as anyone else at being chosen as the princeâs first dance partner. He stumbles the first few steps out onto the empty marble floor, looking painfully mortal. After a few moments though, he seems to gain his footing. Together, they look as different as the sun and moon but seem to fit together just as well. Other couples begin to enter the floor as the Midnight Prince and the human boy rise gently off the ground, dark swirls of magic dancing around them.
Kuroo finally makes his own way down to the ball. He weaves in and out of the crowds. The air is alive with magic and his own body seems to buzz pleasantly with the fairy wine heâs been downing in succession. Heâs about to grab another when he sees him.
He forgets to breathe.
Itâs not until a couple dances into him and throws him a dirty look that he realizes heâs just been standing there frozen. He moves out of the way but he doesnât take his eyes off the boy.
He canât stop staring.
The boy, leaning against a wall unawares of how heâs stopped Kurooâs world, is beautiful, so beautiful he makes Kurooâs heart ache. Heâs a true fairy. No glitter mars his skin, no, his skin glows from the inside. Tiny veins of pulsing light etch designs on his delicate knuckles and around the corners of his eyes. His suit is made of fine material, flowing and creasing like itâs made of rays of sun. A golden bracelet curls up his forearm, matching the shimmering streaks in his hair. Crowning his head are darker strands, as if the fairy had dyed his hair blond like a human might and let it grow out.
Kuroo isnât aware heâs moving towards the boy until heâs directly in front of him. He reaches out a hand to the fairy. (He wants to touch him so desperately.) âDance with me?â He flashes his most winning smile.
The boyâs eyes fix on him, feline and golden. They slide down his body, drinking in the details. âYouâre mortal.â The fairy says quietly. He doesnât take Kurooâs hand.
âThat doesnât mean I canât dance.â
âYou misunderstand.â Those glinting eyes narrow. âI donât want to dance with you.â
âOuch.â Kuroo laughs it off, persisting despite the response. The draw of the boy is too strong and he knows that if he lets the other slip away, he wonât be content for the rest of the night. âCome on, I promise I wonât let you fall.â
âLet me fall?â A smile flits across the fairyâs face and Kurooâs heart jerks. âIt will be my magic keeping us off the ground, of course you wonât let me fall. But I might let you drop of you annoy me.â A glowing hand takes his glitter stained one.
Then theyâre dancing, swaying circles around other couples as their feet move in memorized patterns. The fairyâs hand is warm as light and soft as air in his. He never wants to let it go.
âMy nameâs Kuroo.â
âMineâs Kenma.â He sees the other boyâs teeth flash in a too-quick grin.
Kurooâs feet leave the floor.
A laugh tinkles in his ear as Kurooâs hands return a death-grip. It takes a second for him to catch his breath (itâs more disconcerting than heâll admit) but once his heart settles, itâs beautiful. Kenmaâs magic darts underneath their shoes, supporting every step with gold sparkles. He feels suspended in the moment, like a star hanging in the sky between heaven and Earth.
They dance long past midnight.
-
Kenmaâs fingers curl gently into the sheet as he breathes deeply, coming awake slowly. His body, usually light and agile with fairy blood in his veins, feels heavy. He must have used more magic than he thought last night.
With Kuroo.
He blinks his eyes open. Heâs in his own bed, thatâs at least one good thing. As he hauls himself up, he sees another figure lying besides him.
The other boy stirs, probably from Kenmaâs shifting. During the night, whatever gold powder the human had used has been rubbed away, though some of it is smudging the sheets. As the other boy blearily awakens, Kenma sees two dark, magic-less eyes look back at him.
âGood morning.â Kuroo drawls, a grin stretching across his face.
Kenma stiffens. âYouâre a mortal.â
âYes, I do believe we established that last night.â
âNo, I wouldnât haveâŠâ He hesitates, eyes darting down the length of the boy in front of him, all slinking charm and muscle. âI shouldnât have done this.â He amends.
âDone what? I think I might have forgotten what events led to me waking up in your bed, can you remind me?â Kenma feels a flush crawl down his cheekbones as Kuroo winks. âYou can tell me or show me, whichever you prefer.â
Kenma snaps his eyes back to his hands. Part of him wants to just let it happen because it was warm and safe and entrancing last night. Itâs too easy to lose himself. He wants to give in. (His fingers ache to brush through Kurooâs hair, a black mess of mortal disarray.)
He canât look at the other boy as he says, âHumans and fairies donât mix. You die and we donât. Someone always gets hurt.â
Kenma jolts as lips breathe over his shoulder and Kuroo places a hand gently, gently over his. Their fingers slot together, alternating between calloused and glimmering golden skin.
âDonât make me go.â Itâs a whisper, a plea.
Itâs his own fault for turning around. Thereâs adoration glowing in Kurooâs eyes, like the faint hint of magic in Kenmaâs. And thereâs hope, a feeble, straining hope that plays on Kenmaâs heartstrings.
(Heâs falling, oh god, is he falling.)
He leans forward and feels Kuroo melt into the kiss. Tangles knot between his fingers as he runs his hands through Kurooâs hair. The other boyâs fingertips caress his shoulders and run down his arms, every movement soft, sweet and careful. Kenma feels magic thrum in his veins as his heart pounds.
He lets Kuroo convince him to sleep in as they lay together on the bed. The warmth from under the sheets and streams of sunlight makes him drowsy. The other boy fiddles idly with the golden strands of his hair and Kenma feels himself start to drift off. Through closing eyelids, he sees Kuroo smile, beautiful in human youth and love.
Kenma dreams that they dance between the stars in Kurooâs eyes, leaving trails of gold behind them.Â
Message: Merry Christmas! c: aaahh, i really hope you will enjoy this! there were so many ships i wanted to write for but KageYachi was the lucky winner seeing as i enjoyed writing for the both of them lol. anyway, enough rambling from me, i hope you enjoy your gift. :D
Kageyama himself did not know what drove him to accept Yachiâs offer. He was invited to partake in a sport he couldnât fathom. What was the point in spinning in circles on a giant block of ice?
Nevertheless, the setter was going to skate. All he had to do was glide across the frozen ground so he supposed it wouldnât be difficult. He had made all of these deductions by observing people who had been skating this whole time. But, the male hadnât realized that he had been glaring angrily at a rather talented skater. They took a glance at him before quickly getting off of the ice. He must have been scowling at him without realizing itâŠ
âK-Kageyama! Sorry Iâm late!â A familiar shrill voice called out his name.
The setter turned his head at the source of the sound. His sharp glare transformed into a soft, awestruck expression. A red hue followed after which covered the tip of his ears. Kageyama couldnât describe why this change occurred to him. His stomach feels light as if butterflies were fluttering around.
Why has this petite girl cause him to become so fidgety? Yachi isnât doing a single action that could cause him to be like this. Something was different about her, he knew that. His gaze traveled through her hair, which seemed to be the same. Her face didnât look any different. âŠWas it the outfit she was wearing?
The blond was clothed with a rather soft and warm looking sweater. The skirt she wore fit her well, the pastel colors fitting her rather nicely. She also wore black tights which contrasted well with the bright colors she is wearing.
âKageyama?â Yachi shakes a hand in front of his face. âIs everything alright?â
âNoâŠ,â Kageyama said the first thing that came into mind.
Yachi quickly became concerned. âWhatâs wrong?â
âWhat?â
âTell me whatâs wrong! I-Iâll help you!â
âN-nothingâs wrong! I-I misheard the question.â
âOhâŠâ
Neither of the two said anything else. Their heads turned away from each other, as they looked around the vicinity hoping to find a topic to converse about.
âUmmâŠâ Yachiâs voice once again got Kageyamaâs attention. âWe should go skatingâŠ?â
âY-yeah.â
The small blond walked towards the door leading to the ice rink, and the male followed after her. The two change shoes silently, slipping on their ice skates. Yachi quickly, and effortlessly, tied the shoelaces of her skates. Kageyama found it troublesome to have to make so many knots on a pair of shoes. The setter became frustrated unable to find the proper way to tie the shoes.
âK-Kageyama?â The quiet voice called out to him.
âWhat?!â Kageyama abruptly shouted.
The male frightened the young girl with this sudden outburst. He noticed this as she visibly flinched.
Kageyama uttered an apology then returned to attempting to tie the impossible skates he had on.
âKageyama, do you need help tying those?â Yachi asked. âI-I mean, if y-you want! Youâre just having a little trouble so I thought it would be nice to offer help. Iâm not saying you canât figure it out, since youâre smart, but-â
âShow me how to tie them.â The setter undid the mess of the strings he created before motioning for the female to sit beside him. âP-Please.â
Yachi approached the open spot beside the male taking a seat beside him. She undid the shoelaces on one of her skates in order to show Kageyama a step-by-step demonstration of how to tie the shoelaces.
To the blond, it seemed as if Kageyama was intensely following along with Yachiâs actions when in reality, he only wanted to avoid looking at her face. His gaze stayed on the laces he intertwined with his fingers.
He assumed the female thought he was a strange guy already. She probably has noticed how he was staring at her when she first arrived. She probably also thought lowly of him because he canât even tie his shoelaces. How much more childish could he get.
Yachi stands, a slight jump in her step. She raises her hands enthusiastically. âWell, letâs skate!â
Kageyama nods. âYeah.â
The small girl approaches the ice cautiously. A foot is placed right after the other then she quickly finds her balance. Everyone can tell the young girl is quite skilled at skating; she knows how to keep her balance as well as manage the speed of her strides.
This took Kageyama as a shock. Sure, he had heard that the girl could ice skate but he didnât know she was this good. She almost looked like a different person. Everyone who knew Yachi knew her as the shy but cheerful female, but on the ice she was a beautiful being who could glide elegantly on the ice.
The female came to a stop in front of the dumbfounded setter.
âSorry, I get a little excited when I skate.â The blond sheepishly fiddles with her fingers. âI didnât mean to leave you behind.â
âNo, itâs fine,â is all Kageyama could muster. What he wanted was to compliment the small girl and tell her how much he had amazed her in a short amount of time.
âUm, you can come on the ice whenever youâre ready.â Yachi urges with a soft smile. âW-wait! I didnât mean to assume you havenât skated before! Um, so do you know?â
Kageyama shakes his head. âIâll learn as quickly as I can.â
With confidence, the noir-haired male strides toward the icy floor. All he had to do was glide with careful strides across the ice so he was positive he would get the hang of it. Around him are many children and adults who are skillfully sliding around. Who is there to say he canât do the same?
His confidence never wavers as his two feet are placed on the frozen floor. Yachi watched with amazement. She noticed how confident her companion was acting, as if he knew exactly how to act. She wished she had as much as confident as he had.
Kageyama knew it was time to move so he placed one foot in front of the other and pushed himself forward. Instead of gracefully flying across frozen ground, Kageyama had fallen awkwardly to the ground. His cerulean eyes widen when he realized he had put too much force into that kick. His face met the hard ground.
Yachi audibly gasped and scampered towards him. She took one of his arms and pulled him back to his feet. With fretful actions, she inspected the male for any injuries he may have acquired. She found none, but then she took notice of a rather red spot on Kageyamaâs forehead.
âAre you okay? Does it hurt? Do you need to rest?â All of those questions poured out of her mouth at once.
Kageyama raised a hand to his forehead, wincing in pain at the touch. âThatâs gonna bruiseâŠâ
Yachi lightly grasped onto his arm, looking up at the male in concern. âAre you going to be alright? Iâm sorry, I should have helped you this being your first time skating. I didnât think this through, Iâm so sorry! We should go home-â
The male cuts her off. âLetâs keep on skating. I want to learn.â
âO-okay! Iâll make sure to be a good teacher then!â Yachi releases her hold on the setterâs arm and has a determined expression on her face.
Kageyama stands on the ice with the same confidence as before. Yachi kept a sharp eye on him assuming he was going to move.
But he didnât move.
Kageyama stood frozen in place. His permanent scowl was directed to the ground that had caused him to fall over before. A repetition of what had occurred before was not what the onyx-haired male desired so he had to carefully execute some sort of plan that would make it easier to move on the ice. He wasnât going to move a muscle until he knew what to do.
Yachi noticed the intense expression on his face.g. This scene would have been rather comical with his legs shaking like they were, but the expression on Kageyamaâs face made him look intimidating. Maybe this was her cue to act as his teacher.
Yachi stood beside the male. âDo you want help taking the first few steps?â
The male gives an assertive nod.
Yachi thought for a while before she began explaining. âWell, when I was first taught by my mother how to skate she would-â
The golden-haired girl stopped mid-sentence and a blush grew onto her cheeks. She would never have the nerve to hold hands with him! What would all of the other people think? Surely everyoneâs eyes would be on them two and everyone would whisper about how odd the two looked together.
Yachi gazed up at the awaiting male beside him. He tilted his head to the side, obviously confused as to why the blond had changed behaviour so quickly.
But Kageyama did want to learn so she had to forget about what other people would think and teach him!
Yachi took a deep breath before she continued to speak. âMy m-mom, she would holdonmyhandtoteachmehowtoskate!â
âHuh?â Kageyama didnât understand her conjunct words. Maybe he wasnât listening well?
âIâm sorry you donât have to do this if you donât want to but the only way I know how to teach you is to⊠hold hands with you.â Yachi whispered the last part.
âAlright.â
âWhat?!â Yachi craned her neck upwards. Kageyama didnât look nervous at all.
Again, she took a deep breath. With eyes shut closed, Yachi reached over and took Kageyamaâs hand into her own.
The male wondered why his heart began to pulsate so rapidly. The same feeling he was experiencing before was back again. Was it strange to enjoy the feeling of her hand against his? It was a nice feeling to have a hand smaller than his held by his much larger one.
âI-Iâm going to start moving!â Yachi declared.
Kageyama nods slowly as a reply, unable to speak.
From a spectatorâs point of view, the two must have resembled awkward deer, except one was advancing much better than the other. Yachi made sure to take slow but precise steps. Kageyama would attempt to copy her movements but every time he attempted to move he would lose his balance. These graceless motions repeated for the remainder of the hour the two spent at the ice skating rink.
Yachi suggested to call it a day and to head home. The walk home was a silent one with the two being blushing messes. They found it difficult to forget the now-gone warm sensation they had whenever their hands were intertwined with one another. That memory would resurface causing one or the other to start blushing again.
âD-did you have fun?â Yachi decided to start a conversation hoping to calm the furious red that wanted to resurface on her face.
Kageyama nods. âY-yes!â
She smiles shyly. âThatâs good.â
âA-and, I want to do that again!â
âY-you do?!â
Kageyama nods.
Yachi was not going to deny that the idea didnât sound too bad. She did enjoy herself today.
Maybe Kageyama could figure out these feelings of his too.
Summary: Wherein Bokuto belts out a few hundred Christmas songs and does not help with Akaashiâs Iâm-Totally-Gay-For-My-Captain Crisis.
Notes: Happy holidays, @natrozeâ!! I really, really hope you like this but also apologize for this because really what have I done. :o Thank you for being such a cool spiker from the start, though!! <3 <3
From:Â mizoguchiest
It is the day after Halloween when the first notes of Last Christmas are crooned in the showers of Fukurodani High School. A collective groan rises from the boysâ volleyball clubââSeriously, Bokuto?â Konoha yells into the airâbut even through the smoke and water from three showers over, Bokuto manages to find Akaashiâs eyes and wink. Bokuto tips his head back, lets the water run through his hair, and at the top of his voice continues with âThis yearâŠâ
And so it is the day after Halloween that Akaashi Keiji realizes he has a Problem. Out the corner of his eye, he watches Bokutoâs adams apple bob as he croons the next few lines of the song. It is the day after Halloween that Akaashi Keiji realizes that the Problem is Bokuto Koutarou, and damn, does he have it bad for his captain.
Akaashi soon realizes the Problem is not a new one.
Bokutoâs rendition of I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus in mind, Akaashi had let his hands wander to his motherâs old guitar in the week since Halloween. Heâd cautiously dragged his fingers over the strings, only to nearly jump back in horror. Itâs nowhere near as melodic as that time Kaede-san was playing hers outside the music room, so well that Bokuto had chimed in to her singing with just as much swing and pizazz as the song demanded that Akaashi could only stare in wonder, his thoughts drowned out by the music. Then he feels the same tightness in his chest, the same drop in his stomach as he remembers Kaede-sanâs delight as well, how it made her smile bright and her eyes shine to have Bokuto so perfectly in tune with her, so Akaashi puts away the memory. Bokuto, this, Bokuto, thatâback to reality, please.
It strikes him that his reality is that heâs now actually cleaning the music room as his after school duties, two weeks after Halloween, with Bokutoâs sultry version of Santa Baby stuck in his head. Heâs bringing out a trashcan filled with sheet music somebody had given up on when his hand ghosts over the piano and â ping!âplays a perfect octave. Akaashi scoffs at himself. Itâs definitely nicer than the guitarâs sound, but whatâs he meant to do with that? He feels more at ease later when he sees his fingers framing a volleyball instead of piano keys, Bokuto reaching for his toss within a second. Akaashi sees the pale sliver of thigh that peeks out of Bokutoâs shorts whenever he jumps for the spike. He sees the thin scar that runs across Bokutoâs bicep, the way Bokutoâs dark shirt is stretched across his back, how the sweat drips off his tall nose. He later takes in Bokutoâs hair wet from the shower, the way he shakes it out of his face and slicks it back with one hand while his other clutches the towel around his waist., and holy shit, Akaashi is really gay.
So three weeks after Halloween, Akaashiâs still coming to grips with just how nice Bokuto Koutarouâs body is (and how his Iâll Be Home For Christmas is actually pretty decent) when Bokuto lets out a harmless âGreat practice today, Akaashi!â
Akaashi thanks him, and slowly closes his eyes at his locker. Butterflies? Really?
But âAkaashiâ. âA-kAAAAshi,â with the short pause after the first A and the rest of the As exaggeratedly prolonged; he can hear it clear as whenever itâs drawn out of Bokuto. He also had no idea he can feel so nice, so elated just by hearing somebody say his name. And other feelingsâdonât get Akaashi started on the feelings! He can almost feel the infectious excitement that radiates off of Bokuto on the court, can almost feel the swell in his own chest whenever Bokuto yells out, âNice toss!â The sting of Bokutoâs too-hard pats on the back, the gravitational pull of his glowing brown eyes as he says, âYou can do it, Akaashi, I believe in you,â every triumphant mental roar he goes through in time with Bokutoâs âHey, hey, hey!âs, Bokutoâs unabashed will to win and unconcealed love for the gameâthe feelings fill Akaashi like a drink of cool water in a desert.
And so itâs on the first of December (humming Bokutoâs grand interpretation of O Holy Night) that Akaashi finally finds himself in this weird alternate dimension where every annoying little thing Bokuto Koutarou does, all his quirks and habits and outright weirdness, have trapped him in this downward spiral of being in love with Bokuto Koutarou. How does he do it, Akaashi thinks bemusedly.
More importantly: How is he going to keep this under wraps? On his way to school that day Akaashi gets the sudden urge to just turn back and go home. His palms start to sweat, the soles of his feet start to sweat in his shoesâall wildly uncomfortable feelings, especially in the growing cold. Is this what love is like? He thinks, and decides he should just lay himself down on the sidewalk if heâs going to be this corny. But Akaashi is done with denial; heâs had enough of it in the months leading up to Halloween and knows exactly whatâs going on here now (putting a name to this monster was only the slightest bit relieving, though) and the same way a game demanded his best, demanded to be won (or a song demanded to be belted out full force), the feelings bubbling in Akaashiâs chest demanded not only to be felt, but to beâLord help himâexpressed.
Akaashi takes a deep breath. He tries to keep his face neutral when, really, he thinks heâd spontaneously combust if he has to go on without telling Bokuto something.
But spontaneously combust heâd have to. He canât ruin what he and Bokuto have, can he? He looks to the cloudy skies for answers in vain. Can he?
Akaashi spoils himself sometimes like this, entertaining fantasies of what if Bokuto-san liked me back. He tries to start a list called How to Tell Bokuto-san, but can only really come up with âconfession letterâ which he crosses out quickly because he is not a middle school girl. By the time the school gates are in sight, though, he settles instead on âBokuto-san, I really like you,â which is plain, simple, and encompassing enough of the situation enough that Bokuto could understand.
Or was it? What if Bokuto just pats him on the back again with an âI really like you too, Akaashi!â, and sends Akaashi retreating into a hole of embarrassment for the rest of his life? Shit. Would Akaashi have to use the actual, âNo, Bokuto-san, I mean actually love youâ?
Akaashi presses his palms to his eyes and groans. None of these situations look good.
âAkaaaaashi!â
It takes every muscle in Akaashiâs body not to jump out of his skin.
âDid you forget something at home?â Bokuto throws a warm, heavy arm over Akaashiâs shoulders that Akaashi politely extricates himself from out of habit, and now out of the will to not liquefy into a puddle. Bokutoâs used to this by now and barrels on. âWhyâre you groaning so early in the morning? Or I guess you were just never really a morning person, huh.â
Akaashi gives a non-committal hmmm thatâs supposed to mean, Please, Bokuto-san, this isnât the time; I am currently having a big gay crisis about youâ
âJeez, Akaashi, youâre freezing, though!â Bokuto yells suddenly. He spins Akaashi towards him and plasters his hands to Akaashiâs cheeks. Theyâre searing compared to the harsh stinging of the wind. Theyâre also rough but surprisingly gentle, as if Bokutoâs aware of how large and clunky they can be, and Akaashi can feel the callouses on the fingers resting on his jaw. Itâs been seconds now since Akaashiâs ears stopped feeling like they were going to fall off his face and more like they were about to shoot steam out of them.
âHere, take this,â Bokuto says. With a flourish, Bokuto pulls something out of his school bag and brandishes it in Akaashiâs face. Akaashiâs field of vision goes grey. He reaches to usher the thing away from his face when he is surprised by how soft⊠What is this? It is a hoodie. Itâs grey flecked with black, very thick, and so very, very soft. Akaashiâs suddenly overtaken by the urge to wear it. He shrugs it over his head in an instant, letting the warmth envelope him and thinks, like downy feathers.
He pulls the hood up higher around his neck and breathes in. Oh, god. It smells clean, but also much like the bus rides home when Bokutoâs fallen asleep leaning on him, or whenever Bokutoâd bump shoulders with him on the way from the store.
âThank you,â Akaashi says sincerely, but heâs not entirely sure what his face is doing at this point. Heâs probably seconds away from short-circuiting.
Bokutoâs eyes are glowing with happiness, on the other hand, his cheeks flush in the cold and morning rush, and he looks thoroughly satisfied with his effort in keeping his setter toasty. The school bell rings and he rushes off with a grin, silhouetted by the morning sun peeking out shyly from between the heavy clouds behind the school building.
âNo problem! Stay warm! Oh, and think about what you want to do for the Christmas fundraiser, okay?â
Akaashi is warm all day, at times more than others. Heâs warm sitting in class thinking of other grey and black things that are downy soft (hint: itâs Bokutoâs hair). Heâs warm as Konoha, Komi and Sarukui stop him in the hallway and give the sweater a once-over, before patting his shoulder and saying âGood luck.â(Thatâs when Akaashiâs aware heâs being obvious, but he really is cold otherwiseâor so he tells himself. Heâs not really sure anymore.) Heâs warm under the heat of Kaede-sanâs fuming gaze as she looks him up and down. (Thatâs when Akaashiâs aware that heâs so, so petty, and really obvious, but petty enough that he enjoys being obvious.)
Later he doesnât know if the heat had gotten to him, or if he was high on the scent of Bokuto on the hoodie, or just plain stupid, but when they do have the Christmas fundraiser meeting, the first thing out of Akaashiâs mouth is âCaroling.â
âCaroling, huh?â Bokuto teases, grinning. Akaashi steps blithely out of the way as Bokuto tries to bump shoulders with him. Akaashiâs grumpy, humiliated to the bone, even though the club had thought caroling was a good idea. Heâd outed himself, thatâs what heâd done, and had let himself be roped into an impromptu rehearsal of Baby, Itâs Cold Outside with Bokuto while the other club members hooted encouragingly from the audience until Shirofuku-san had come in and announced that her grandmotherâs store would sell them the cookies at a discount again so they could have their annual bake sale instead.
Now Bokuto himself is bouncing up and down, teasing Akaashi about his obviousness, and Akaashi makes a mental note to throw himself out of the next second-story window they encounter.
Bokuto spins in front of Akaashi and begins to walk backwards. Thankfully, the sidewalk on their way to the station isnât crowded at this time of day, or Akaashiâd have to mother hen Bokuto out of another potential disaster.
âIf you wanted to hear me sing some more, ya shouldâve just said.â Bokutoâs grin turns wolfish. Akaashi just huffs in reply.
With a satisfied hoot Bokuto relents, spinning back to Akaashiâs side like a whirlwind. âWhat are your plans this Christmas?â
âVisiting my grandparents in the country,â Akaashi says curtly.
It takes him a while to realize Bokutoâs stopped, frozen on the sidewalk with his mouth hanging open like a fishâs. The look on his face is so dismayed that Akaashi feels his stormy mood replaced with genuine concern.
âWhat is it, Bokuto-san?â
Bokuto flounders for words. âNothing, I guess I just thought youâd be here.â He shakes his head. âAww, well. Iâll see you when you get back I guess.â
Akaashi nods. They walk together in tumultuous, uncharacteristic bilateral silence that Akaashi felt compelled to break. âWould you like anything from the country?â he asks.
âMe?â Suddenly Bokutoâs a million watts brighter again, starting to dance in excitement. Cute, Akaashi thinks suddenly, and searches for that second-story window to jump out off. Then Bokutoâs humming and dancing starts to take on a worryingly familiar rhythmâŠ
âBokuto-sanâŠâ
âOh, you know me, Akaashi.â Bokutoâs in front of him again, doing jazz squares backwards. Akaashiâs that weird mix of alarmed and impressed he always is when Bokutoâs around. âIâŠâ
âNo, forget I asked.â
â⊠donât want a lot for Christmas. There is just one thing I need.â
âBokuto-san, you will fall over.â
Bokuto is gesturing over to Akaashi wildly. âYou gotta sing the second voice!â
âNo,â Akaashi says, pulling on Bokutoâs sleeve to get him out of someoneâs way.
âAkaashi!â
âAnd I,â Akaashi sings, flat and quiet. Bokuto beams; his dancing becomes larger and more erratic.
âI donât care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree!â Bokuto shuts his eyes and scrunches up his nose. âI-I just want you for my own, mooo-ooore than you can ever knoo-wââ
âBokuto-san!â Akaashi bodily pushes Bokuto out of the way, just as a woman laden with shopping bags rushes past both of them, but Akaashi himself slips as he movesâit might be on a flyer, a piece of loose paper, a tissue, heâs not sure, but suddenly his grip on Bokutoâs arm doesnât work anymore and he sees the silver clouds as he tips over backwards.
Then thereâs a vice grip on his bicep and a strong arm around the small of his back. When Akaashi blinks again he sees more silver, but this time streaked with black. Bokutoâs saved him from cracking his head on the sidewalk. He has Akaashi pressed to him like a child, and Akaashi can feel Bokutoâs heart hammering right next to his own.
Bokuto loosens his grip so Akaashi is looking right at him instead of breathing in the familiar scent of hair gel. Caught in Bokutoâs gaze now, Akaashi canât breathe. Bokutoâs eyes are excited, searching for something in Akaashiâs own, and Akaashi can see the moment he finds it. What was he looking for? Fear? Embarrassment? Because that was there, definitely. Akaashi thinks no, no, no, he canât know.
I canât take the rejection.
âThat was a close one,â Bokuto finally breathes. His smile is bright and easy. âSorry, Akaashi.â
âDonât worry about it,â Akaashi manages, trying to keep the shake out of his voice.
âAll part of the choreography?â
âYes.â Bokuto-san, please let go of me. Iâm not strong enough to keep resisting you like this. âYou can keep going, now.â
âIâŠâ Bokutoâs eyes are still trained on his own. âIâve forgotten the lyrics.â
Bokuto hasnât pulled away yet, and Akaashi can feel his heart threatening to beat right out of his ribcage. How embarrassing would it be right now, he thinks, if I chose this very moment to throw up on Bokuto-san.
Akaashi clears his throat. âItâs âmake my wish come trueâ, I believe.â
âMake my wish come true,â Bokuto croons gently.
ââBaby, all I want for ChristmasâŠââ
Then Akaashi understands. The realization is so quick and sudden he feels as if heâs been hit by a freight train. Bokuto leans forward to let their foreheads touch, and in his eyes now Akaashi can see Bokutoâs emotions mirroring his own.
âBokuto-san⊠Are you trying to ask me out with a Mariah Carey song?â
Bokutoâs mischievous grin shows all his teeth. âIs it working?â
Akaashi breathes out slow. âI think I would have said yes to anything, at this point.â
Bokuto tips his head back and hoots. âSo you really do like me?â
âIs⊠is it obvious?â Akaashi cringes. But he feels better, so, so much better, like a weightâs been taken off his chest and heâs about to float away in the winter wind and off to the second star on the right and straight on till morning.
Bokuto adjust his arms so Akaashiâs cradled comfortably in them. âI⊠yeah. I enjoyed the attention, to be honest.â
Akaashi feels the blush creep up his throat and wonders if itâs too late to go sailing out a window. He notices the tips of Bokutoâs ears are also very red.
âSo, um,â says Bokuto. âMake my wish come trueâŠâ
Akaashi finally lets himself grin.
âBaby, all I want for ChristmasâŠâ
Akaashi finally pulls Bokuto down by his collar and kisses him.
Summary: Young man falls for attractive stranger who accidentally almost killed him with his car. RIP.
Notes: First of all: hello spiker!! I hope you enjoy this!! Iâm sorry this is more on the fluffy side than the bloody one (although there is a faint hint of âbloodyâ if you squint), but I hope you still like it! Thanks to my two beta readers T & L who made sure this is (kind of) readable!!
The first thing that Kuroo sees upon opening his eyes is red.
His vision is sort of blurry, however, so he canât really pinpoint what it is heâs looking at exactly, but he at least knows itâs red. And wet, too, according to the sensation on his head and arms.
Just what the hell happened?
Heâs lying on his side, of that heâs pretty sure, and his head and left side hurt like someone hit him with a hammer, or like⊠something very, very heavy. He feels too dizzy to even move.
Oh, and his head really, really hurts.
âOh my God are you okay?!â he hears someone yell from somewhere in the distance above him.
Well, at least he can still hear.
âOf course I am,â he tries to reply, but nothing comes out of his mouth. He closes his eyes, trying to kill the headache with the darkness.
âARE YOU ALIVE?â the person shouts again, and Kuroo would shout back at them to shut the Hell up if he wasnât afraid his head would explode out of pain in the process.
âHng,â he manages to moan, slowly moving his arm to his face to rub his temple, and he can hear a loud and long sigh of relief from the stranger, who keeps mumbling to himself and pacing around him like an idiot.
Kuroo somehow succeeds in rolling on his back. He opens his eyes, staring at the sky above him. The stranger immediately kneels beside him, alarmed, as if heâs afraid heâs going to see someone die in front of him today.
âRelax, Iâm not gonna die today,â Kuroo says, out of breath for no particular reason.
âGood, thank you,â the guy replies, seemingly unconvinced by Kurooâs words.
âWhat happened anyway?â Kuroo asks, letting his arm fall back to his side. âI feel like Iâve been hit by a car, or something,â he laughs, trying to get the stranger to laugh too, but seeing the otherâs horrified expression proves Kuroo that his attempt failed miserably.
âWell, actually,â the stranger says, a bit embarrassed, âthatâs kind of what happened.â
âOh.â
Oh?
âWait, what?â Kuroo frowns, finally looking up at the âwow, very attractiveâ stranger.
âWell, I kind of hit you with my car, I mean my parentsâ car, not that it matters anyway? Yeah, doesnât matter, anyway, so huh, was driving and it snowed last night, and the breaks on this car are a bit capricious and I didnât see you early enough and I hit you. I wasnât driving fast I swear, but yeah, you hit my car, fell on the asphalt and I thought you were dead, but youâre not dead, thanks for that by the way, and here we are. Your left leg is bleeding and you hit your head pretty bad, but at least youâre conscious, so thatâs definitely a relief!â the stranger finishes his monologue almost out of breath and Kuroo can only stare at him, a mix of confusion and amusement (but mostly amusement) on his face.
And then, Kuroo starts laughing. A very deep, breathy laugh, the kind that makes your stomach hurt and your breath die in your throat.
âOkay, youâre definitely not okay,â the attractive guy says when Kuroo starts wheezing, concern painted on his face. âIâm bringing you to the hospital.â
âNah, Iâm okay, really, itâs justâŠâ Kuroo moves his hands vehemently, trying to illustrate his point, but he canât find the words. âBut at any rate, Iâm alright, donât worryâŠhuhâŠâ Kuroo quirks an eyebrow at the guy.
âSawamura. Sawamura Daichi.â
âOkay, yeah, donât worry, Sawamura, Iâm fine, really,â Kuroo reassures him while standing up, much to Sawamuraâs distress.
âAre you sure?â Sawamura asks, clearly not convinced as Kuroo supports himself on the car to try to stand up.
âYeah, definitely,â Kuroo replies, trying to lean on the car in what he hopes seems a casual manner. âDefinââ
***
The first thing Kuroo sees upon opening his eyes is black. Darkness, big and terrifying. He starts to panicâŠ
âŠand nearly falls off the backseat of a car he doesnât recognize, where heâs sprawled in an uncomfortable position.
âHey, youâre awake, thank God,â Sawamura sighs loudly, if not louder than the first time Kuroo heard him sigh a while ago, which was a pretty heavy one, as far as sighs go.
Kuroo rubs his head and tries to get himself in a seated position.
âWhat happââ Kuroo begins.
âYou fainted,â Sawamura picks up right away, âI caught you before you hit your head for the second time in the span of ten minutes, and I put you inside my car. Sorry for the discomfort by the way, I was just trying to hurry up so I donât look like Iâm abducting someone.â
Kuroo doesnât see the point in mentioning that it probably already looked like that anyway.
âSo where are we heading?â he asks instead, buckling his belt.
âHospital.â
Kuroo clicks his tongue in his mouth, clearly displeased.
âIâm fine, you donât have to do that.â
âSays the one who fainted twice after I hit him with my car?â Sawamura retorts, staring at him intently in his retrovisor.
Well, heâs got a point.
Kuroo doesnât protest further after that.
It still is kind of admirable how far this guy is willing to go for a stranger. That he hit with his car, true, so it was probably due to a great amount of guilt, but still. His dedication is quite admirable. Besides, he could have called an ambulance or whatever, why did he have to drive Kuroo himself to the hospital? And more importantly, how did he even manage to get Kuroo inside his car? Kuroo wasnât the lightest nor the shortest out there, so the guy had to be pretty determined to succeed in such a task. And strong, too. Definitely strong.
Kuroo looks at Sawamuraâs arms and tries to investigate the matter, but itâs kind of hard to see through his hoodie, much to Kurooâs disappointment.
âWeâre here,â Sawamura says after heâs parked and stopped the car, interrupting Kurooâs examination. Kuroo proceeds to get off the car but before heâs even had the time to unbuckle his seatbelt Sawamura is at his side, opening the door like some old-fashioned gentleman.
Kuroo chuckles softly as heâs being helped out of the car.
âI could have done this myself, you know,â Kuroo says, leaning on Sawamuraâs shoulder.
Because, you know, might as well enjoy this a little while he can.
âSure, and faint on me a third time? No thanks,â the other male rolls his eyes.
Kuroo canât really argue with that, so he doesnât, and instead takes advantage of his situation to casually place his hand on Sawamuraâs bicep, making himself comfortable, holding his arm as if to stabilize himself. The other male doesnât really seem to mind, although he does seem a bit puzzled, because thereâs really no logic to this at all. His face is a bit red, probably because of the cold breeze thatâs so characteristic of the first few snowfalls.
Yeah, right.
They walk like this until they reach the waiting room, Kuroo comfortably leaning on Sawamuraâs shoulder. This allows him to notice that the latter is a bit shorter than him, something like a few inches, and that he vaguely smells like a forest of pine trees and axe. Which is not unpleasant, if Kuroo must say so.
Sawamura brings him to the waiting room and makes sure that heâs sat comfortably and still conscious before going to the front desk to get the check in form.
âSo,â Sawamura clears his throat after heâs back, sat on the seat next to Kurooâs, âletâs start with your name?â
âYou know, I can totally fill out a form by myself, right,â Kuroo grins.
âWell,â Sawamura scratches his hair sheepishly, seemingly embarrassed, âwouldnât want you to faint on me again, would I?â
(He doesnât look like heâd mind that, though.)
âYouâve used this excuse too many times already, itâs not working anymore,â Kuroo leans closer to him, pretending to faint. He feels Sawamuraâs shoulder tense under his weight and laughs before sitting back properly.
âThat was not funny.â
âAlright, alright, sorry,â Kuroo says, shaking his hands. âAs you wish. The nameâs Kuroo Tetsurou.â
Sawamura nods and writes down, making sure heâs got the kanji right.
âAge?â
âNineteen.â
âReally? Me too,â Sawamura casually mentions while noting, making Kuroo grin in amusement.
This situation is as cute as itâs ridiculous.
âBirthday?â
âNovember 17th.â
âOh, really?â Sawamura turns to face him. âHappy belated birthday, then.â
âIt was like three weeks ago, man, you know.â
Sawamura shrugs.
They go on like this for a while, Sawamura writing down the answers in Kurooâs stead. Not that Kuroo really minds; heâs never been really shy, plus he can take advantage of the situation to stare at the other male to his content. Messy dark hair cut short, kind brown eyes and straight nose. Just his type, if he was asked.
âSexually active?â
âIs that an invitation?â Kuroo answers smugly.
Sawamura blushes slightly, heaving out an exasperated sigh.
Oh, how Kuroo loves that.
He didnât expect Sawamura to be the type that gets shy at the mention of sex.
âIt was not, thank you,â Sawamura replies calmly. âSo?â he quirks an eyebrow at Kuroo, apparently trying his best to look exasperated (which heâs considerably failing at).
âWell, not at the moment, but there was one time six months ago. And with my ex-boyfriend, it was pretty wild, he would constantly suââ
âOkay, fine, fill the rest yourself,â Sawamura mumbles as he hands Kuroo the notepad, rubbing his face with his free hand.
Kuroo thanks him with a wink and heâs pretty sure he can see the other maleâs blush deepen slightly, but he wouldnât swear on that.
It takes him another 10 minutes to finish filling out the form, which Sawamura kindly brings back to the front desk, saying that Kuroo wouldnât exhaust himself or faint again that way.
To which Kuroo had replied that it would only accelerate the process to make a doctor see him.
At which Sawamura hadnât laughed at all.
âYou know,â Kuroo says after Sawamura comes back and sits beside him once again, âyou donât have to stay. You can go back to whatever you were gonna do.â
âNah, wanna make sure youâre fine.â
Kuroo looks at him, and thereâs an instant. An instant in which thereâs only Kuroo staring straight into Sawamuraâs eyes and Sawamura staring back and the only thing Kuroo sees is genuine concern and something soft and warm, like fondness but not quite, because how can you be fond of someone you met just hours ago? That wouldnât work, right? Sawamura sure isnât fond of him. He just wants to make sure heâs alright so he doesnât have someoneâs death to shoulder for the rest of his life.
âI mean,â Sawamura adds quickly, playing with the hem of his shirt, âitâs my fault youâre here in the first place, you know.â
It definitely looks like heâs nervous for a reason Kuroo doesnât really understand. In fact, he himself feels a bit fidgety. Thereâs something about this whole thing â about Sawamura â that makes him feel a bit nervous, even though heâs never actually been that nervous around people he crushed on.
Not that he has a crush on Sawamura, because Kuroo Tetsurou definitely is not the type to have any kind of crush on people he met 3 hours prior. But he cannot deny that there is something about the guy and this whole situation that looks like it comes straight out of a weird shoujo manga.
âBesides, I donât really have anything to do anyway,â Sawamura finishes, and Kuroo thinks he sees him nod to himself ever so slightly, as if to convince himself.
Definitely not a crush.
As if on cue, Sawamuraâs phone rings.
âHold on,â he excuses himself as he picks up. âHello?â
Kuroo is pretty sure he hears yelling on the other side of the line.
âShit, I know, I forgot to callâ No, no, really, itâs a long story I⊠no, I didnât forget cleaning duty, I was on my way back and kind of hit someone with momâs car?⊠What, no, itâs not a joke, Suga, listen, IâŠâ Sawamura winces, pinching the bridge of his nose. âNo, this is not a dumb excuse to hide the fact that Iâm on a datââ Sawamura stops himself, cheeks reddening. âAt any rate, Suga, Iâm sorry. Iâll text you later, okay? Weâre waiting for the doctor. Say hi to your mom for me.â
Sawamura hungs up, not waiting for his interlocutor to reply. He apologizes to Kuroo, running his hands in his hair in embarrassment.
âI see. So you hit me to get away from cleaning. Pretty hardcore.â
Sawamura laughs and explains to Kuroo what happened this morning before the incident; that he was at a party, but since he had promised his roommate to help clean the apartment before his parents arrived to visit, he was coming back early. However, this plan was canceled pretty fast after the incident, and in the heat of the moment Sawamura had forgotten to call Sugawara, his roommate, to tell him that he couldnât come because heâd just hit a random guy with a car. Which was understandable, as far as Kuroo was concerned.
Kuroo then tells him he was at a party also (not the same, apparently, or else heâs pretty sure heâd been coming back with Sawamura, but then again nothing seems to go the normal way with that guy) and that he usually doesnât come back this early from parties either (it was only 9AM) but heâd been woken up by his best friend having extremely loud early morning sex with his boyfriend and heâd decided for his sanity that itâd be better to just leave while he still could. Sawamura laughs but still pats his shoulder in a comforting manner, and Kuroo likes the warmth of his palm and the shy smile that follows after he withdraws his hand, as if heâd just been caught doing something he wasnât supposed to do.
Definitely. Not. A. Crush.
The doctor chooses this particular moment to come in and call for Kuroo. Kuroo doesnât protest when Sawamura helps him out of his seat and carries him to the examination room. Neither does the doctor, although he does seem a bit intrigued and amused.
***
The first thing that Kuroo sees upon opening his eyes is green. The terrible, painfully dull green that is so characteristic of hospital roomsâ walls.
âYouâre awake,â he hears a voice say.
Itâs always the same voice since this morning, and he wonders if he hasnât imagined it this time. But he turns his head and there he is, Sawamura Daichi, sitting on a wooden chair thatâs probably in the top five most uncomfortable seats in the world, beside his hospital bed.
âI told you you could go home, you know. Theyâre gonna keep me here all night,â Kuroo yawns.
He catches a glimpse of the window behind Sawamura, and seeing how the moon is shining so brightly heâs been there waiting for quite a long time. Hours. Nearly a whole day. Isnât that just the kindest thing? If it isnât, then Kuroo doesnât know what it is.
âI know. Just making sure youâre alive,â Sawamura says, a warm smile on his face.
Kuroo swears his heart didnât just skip a beat. Because that would be weird, right? They donât really know each other; well, they did chat for a few hours in the waiting room and they did talk another few hours after the doctor had proceeded with his examination, until Kuroo had fallen back to sleep upon the doctorâs orders. He was fine, but they needed to monitor him during the night to make sure he actually was okay to go back home without further complications. But right now he doesnât feel fine at all, quite frankly, and the things his heart does whenever Sawamura says heâs âjust making sure heâs aliveâ or smiles at him are certainly not normal and should be dealt with right this instant.
âWell, I canât really die or else youâll feel responsible for my death. Canât do that to you.â
âHow nice of you,â Sawamura replies, amused.
âIâm always this kind,â Kuroo adds, solemnly putting his right arm to his heart.
Sawamura laughs, and Kuroo loves the way it sounds and kind of wants to hear more of it each time it happens, especially when heâs the one making it happen.
âIâm gonna leave now, though,â Sawamura stands up from his (uncomfortable) seat. âPromised Suga Iâd be there for dinner, and Iâm already late.â
âYeah, sure. Sorry about that, by the way. Tell him hi for me.â
âSure will,â Sawamura replies, biting his lip.
Thereâs a silence after that, a silence filled with a bit of awkwardness, but also a whole lot of disappointment. Is this it? Is this how this is gonna end? Kuroo gets hit by a hot stranger, said stranger spends the day in the hospital with him, and then nothing? What kind of disastrous shoujo manga is this?
Itâs not in Kurooâs habit to be this shy; he would have asked for the guyâs number by now under normal circumstances.
But those were definitely not normal circumstances, and he wasnât too sure about the procedure.
âSo, goodbye, then?â Sawamura adds. He squeezes Kurooâs shoulder before leaving, and Kuroo almost reaches for his arm before heâs out of reach, until he realizes what heâs about to do and stops midway. Sawamura seems to have realized it too and Kuroo is pretty sure heâs stopped in his track for a good two seconds before moving forward again, but maybe thatâs the effect of the painkiller, heâs not too sure anymore.
Sawamura waves his hand and smiles at Kuroo one last time, standing in the doorway a few seconds too long, leaving Kuroo by himself in his suddenly cold hospital room and a heart that beats suspiciously too fast.
***
The first thing that Kuroo sees upon opening his eyes is white. Surprisingly enough the ceiling is not the same boring, tasteless green as the walls but a bright white, enhanced by the sunlight coming in from the window. Not too bad, he thinks.
He rubs his eyes and yawns, stretching his arms. It aches much less than yesterday; all heâs got is a few bruises on his forearm that absorbed the shock, but the most harm was done to his leg that had been the first victim of the impact. It was only bruised too, by some weird miracle, and he didnât suffer from a concussion either from hitting his head on the asphalt. Apparently the sweatshirt he was carrying and had dropped before falling to the ground (and mistook for a pool of blood) had kept him from hitting his head too hard, and the fainting was due to the lack of sleep and leftovers from alcohol.
He almost yells when he hears someone clear their throat beside him.
âFuck, Daichi, you scared me,â Kuroo blurts out, breathing in and out too fast.
He doesnât even realize heâs used Sawamuraâs first name until he sees the faint blush on the guyâs face and thinks back on what he just said that might have caused this reaction.
âIâm sorry,â Sawamura mumbles, apparently embarrassed. âI, uhâ just came by to check if you were still alive, I guess?â
Again with this sentence, again with the uncharacteristically skyrocketing heart rate, again with the shoujo manga scenario.
Maybe ending up unhurt after this accident wasnât the only miracle that had happened to him on that morning after all.
The doctor comes in just then to do his last check-up before officially discharging Kuroo.
âAlso,â the doctor adds at last, before leaving the room, âIâd recommend you donât go home alone. Just in case, have someone bring you home, maybe.â
Kuroo could swear heâs seen the doctor smirk before leaving the room.
This is only getting weirder.
âSo?â Kuroo prompts after heâs changed from the ugly hospital gown to his own clothes.
âHuh, well,â Sawamura scratches the back of his head, âguess I canât really go against a doctorâs words. Want a ride, maybe?â he looks expectantly at Kuroo.
Kuroo doesnât need to be asked twice.
âSure thing, man. Thanks,â he says. Sawamura walks towards him and grabs his arms to wrap it around his neck.
âI can walk, you know,â Kuroo says, but heâs not initiating any move to get away either.
âItâs just a reflex, at that point, I think,â Sawamura says.
âRight,â Kuroo smirks, following Sawamuraâs lead out of the room.
They walk for a while, a little slower than they could. Kurooâs legs are fine; in fact, Kuroo feels perfectly fine. Heâs radiating with energy, probably the result of so much Sawamura in his life in the past 24 hours. And yet he complies with the other boyâs pace, not too sure if heâs walking slow on purpose to make the moment last longer or to manage Kurooâs legs.
At that point heâs not even ashamed to say heâs clearly wishing for the first option.
âHey, look, mistletoe,â Sawamura casually claims, pointing to a corner facing the door leading to the staircase.
âHow inconvenient to put it in that spot,â Kuroo comments, shaking his head.
âWhy?â Sawamura stops, looking at Kuroo curiously.
Kuroo swallows. He doesnât know why heâs so nervous, heâs done this before, heâre flirted before; but something about Sawamura makes him doubt his confidence â in the best of ways, though.
âWell,â Kuroo explains, âmistletoe is for people to kiss under, right?â he says, staring right into Sawamuraâs eyes, looking for something that he finds right away; the exact same thing heâs pretty sure is burning in his own eyes.
âSo,â Kuroo continues, slowly walking towards the spot, âif, say, two people were to walk under it by some sort of weird twist of fateâŠâ they stop right under the plant, âit would kind of, if I may say,â Kuroo gets closer to Sawamura, leaning in slowly, making sure not to break eye contact, block the way, or something like that.â
âOh,â Sawamura replies, his stare moving from Kurooâs eyes to his lips, âwell, thatâs incredibly inconvenient, alright,â he adds, licking his lips as he leans in closer to Kurooâs mouth.
âMhh,â Kuroo hums, eyes half-lidded, his lips literally an inch apart from the other boyâs, âI know right?â
âA shameâŠâ Sawamura says, closing in the distance between them.
The instant their lips touch Kuroo pulls Sawamura closer with the arm already circling his shoulder and wraps his other arm around the shorter maleâs middle, reciprocating the kiss almost ferociously.
Kuroo doesnât really mind the fact that heâs not taking the first step; didnât even think Sawamura ever would do it, yet here they were, kissing under a misplaced branch of mistletoe in a hospital hallway.
***
The first thing that Kuroo sees upon opening his eyes is brown. Brown like chocolate, like trees and pine cones he used to collect when he was a child, brown with sparks and light and warmth, brown like Sawamuraâs eyes staring right back at him.
âYou know,â Sawamura says, bringing his hand to cup Kurooâs cheek tentatively, âthis is probably the weirdest thing Iâve said, but Iâm kind of glad I ran you over with my parentsâ car.â
âWell,â Kuroo laughs, ânever thought Iâd be glad I got hit by your parentsâ car, Daichi,â he murmurs the last part, and thatâs all it takes for Sawamura to dive in, forcing Kurooâs back on the wall, the hand cupping his cheek going all the way up to his hair, pulling at it roughly as his other hand grabs on his waist. Kuroo tightens his grasp on Sawamuraâs neck, trying to pull him the closest he can, as if when heâll open his eyes again heâll be gone, like a dream heâs made up in his mind to bear with the accident or the end of this odd shoujo manga heâs been the protagonist of since the day before.
It takes approximately seven minutes for them to be spotted for the first time by some guy passing by, and it takes nine additional minutes for a nurse to find them, yelling something about public indecency.
Well, in their defense, while it might have looked like they were onto something more, they were only kissing. Itâs only a sad turn of events that Kurooâs watch had gotten tangled in Sawamuraâs t-shirt, lifting it halfway up his stomach, showing a bit more skin than is appropriate under public circumstances. And that Kurooâs face was burried into Sawamuraâs neck, trying to choke back the laugh because Sawamura had accidentally brushed his hand on a ticklish spot.
Sawamura and Kuroo exchange an amused glance as the nurse goes out of her way to lecture them, a vein popping out in her neck, and with a barely noticeable nod they both go for it and run away from her, who runs back after them until theyâre out of her range. Kurooâs pretty sure he saw a doctor stop the nurse to scold her for making such a ruckus for nothing before the elevator doors closed in on the scene.
Sawamura and Kuroo laugh their way to the car, and they spend the ride back chatting.
Itâs only when Sawamura turns off the engine in front of Kurooâs apartment block that Kuroo realizes he hasnât even told him his address.
âHow did youâ?â
âThe form. You told me yesterday. Well, indirectly, I guessâŠ,â Sawamura scratches the back of his head, âI kind of accidentally read it when I brought back the form to the front deskâŠvery accidentally.â
Kuroo scoffs.
âSorry, thatâs probably a little creepy,â Sawamura apologizes.
âWell. I was intending on giving it to you anyway, after, you know,â Kuroo makes hand gestures between them, âthisâ.
However, feeling like this isnât a proper description, he leans in and kisses Sawamura, because actions speak louder than words, or so they say.
When they part Sawamura laughs softly, and once again, Kurooâs never felt so satisfied in his entire life.
âWell,â Kuroo continues, âI suppose since you kissed me first, itâs only fair that I ask you for your number? To, you know, continue where weâve been interrupted,â Kuroo smirks and waggles his eyebrows, eliciting that oh-how-beautiful laugh from Sawamura.
âSure,â the other boy grabs a pen in his glove box and writes it on Kurooâs hands. âCall me?â
âSure will,â Kuroo says, getting out of the car. âOh, and no cars this time, maybe?â Kuroo winks.
âYeah,â Sawamura considers, âguess we could just take a walk.â

âSorry, sorry, let me through!â Oikawa chimes as he walks through the hospital building with a box in his hands, footsteps fast and steady. He has to avoid stepping on a few nursesâ feet (but the one time he does step on oneâs a quick apology and a smile are enough for the incident to be forgotten), stop in his tracks to let two children run from one room to the one across the hall to catch a volleyball, and catch a couple making out in a corner under a mistletoe (of which Oikawa mentally registers the position, because heâs totally bringing Iwa-chan there before they leave), but after a good fifteen minutes he finally manages to reach his boyfriendâs room.
âSorry Iâm late, Iwa-chan!â Oikawa smiles, slightly out of breath from all the mess he had to go through to get there.
He lets out a heavy sighs as he puts the box down at the bedâs feet, a confused Iwaizumi staring at him.
âWhatâs that?â
âA gift, of course,â Oikawa beams. Iwaizumi scowls.
âWhatever that is, I donât want it.â
âTssk tssk tssk, Iwa-chan,â Oikawa reprimands him, âdonât say that until youâve seen what it is. You wonât be disappointed! Canât say you wonât be embarrassed, though,â he adds before placing a soft kiss on his boyfriendâs forehead.
âIs that supposed to make me want to see it? Because itâs not working,â Iwaizumi objects, unconvinced.
Oikawa doesnât reply; instead, he opens the box, carefully hiding itâs content from Iwaizumi. He pulls out a scarf from the box and wraps it around Iwaizumiâs head so he canât see what heâs about to do.
âDefinitely not working,â Iwaizumi sighs but doesnât protest further, because he knows that 1) Oikawa wonât give up anyway, and 2) he actually doesnât mind the attention.
Not to mention that he is actually a bit curious to know whatâs inside the box, although he will never admit it out loud, especially to Oikawa, because he wants to avoid the I told you so as much as he can.
It takes approximately fifteen minutes for Oikawa to empty the box, and ten more minutes to arrange the items to his heartâs content in the room. Heâs humming softly to some Christmas tunes while doing so to prevent Iwaizumi from getting bored. He knows his boyfriend loves it, even if he would never admit to it. Oikawa would often do this when they were lying in bed in the dark of the night, cuddled up against each other, whispering against Iwaizumiâs skin or humming his favourite songs against his neck.
âOkay, Iâm done, Iwa-chan, open your eyes!â Oikawa says with satisfaction, hands on his hips.
âOh, yes, right,â Oikawa laughs and moves towards Iwaizumi, delicately untying the scarf from his eyes.
He would be lying if he said he wasnât proud of the look on his boyfriendâs face right now. The other male is staring in awe at the wall beside him, full of pictures of he and Oikawa, their old volleyball teams from middle and high school and their respective families in the midst of way too much garlands and snowflake stickers. Thereâs even a mini Christmas tree on the nightstand beside his bed.
Clearly, thatâs almost overdoing it, if not totally, but Iwaizumi feels warmth bubbling up in his chest. Maybe itâs the medicine or the tiredness, or just the endless fondness he feels for anything Oikawa does for him, but heâs definitely moved by the efforts Oikawa put into this whole thing.
âYou know Iâm leaving in two days, right?â Iwaizumi says softly. âYou didnât have to do all this.â
âDonât be stupid,â Oikawa slaps Iwaizumiâs arm gently, âof course I had to. You need some positive energy and some festive ambiance to heal properly!â he winks.
Iwaizumi chuckles.
âThanks, Oikawa,â he whispers, leaning forward to kiss his boyfriend, who leans in to meet his lips.
âCome here,â Iwaizumi says, making some space for Oikawa to lay down beside him.
Oikawa smiles and gets in bed with Iwaizumi, wrapping his arm around the other maleâs neck for him to use as a pillow.
âWill you stay with me a bit longer?â Iwaizumi whispers into Oikawaâs ears.
âOf course,â the latter replies, leaning in, gently cupping his boyfriendâs face.
The kiss is soft and slow, hands brushing against skin and playing through soft strands of hair. Those are the kisses Oikawa always longs for, never gets enough of. Heâd be lying if he said he hadnât missed them, even though he only had to go two days without it. He doesnât think he would have been able to go through one more day without them, as cheesy as it sounds, and their shared apartment felt terribly lonely without Iwaizumi, hence his decision of surprising his boyfriend with decorating his hospital room.
Heâs not exactly sure he is allowed to do it, though.
Not that he really cares.
They stay like this for a while, lips moving together in perfect unison like theyâve done so many times before, like thereâs no one but them in this room, this building, this universe. If Oikawa had to pick a moment to live over and over again for the rest of eternity, he would definitely pick any one of their slow, loving kisses, bodies pressed against each other and hearts beating as one.
The spell is broken with the sound of a nurse yelling and loud footsteps noises, which startles them. Afraid theyâve been caught, Oikawa immediately retreats and jumps out of the bed. The sound of footsteps grows louder and Oikawa goes back to the empty box on the floor so he can pretend to be busy with whatever he could find in there, trying to steady the beating of his heart. Nobody ever comes in, though; all he and Iwaizumi can hear are two guys laughing and a nurse lecturing them about public indecency.
He catches Iwaizumiâs startled glance and starts to laugh, and Iwaizumi follows soon after.
âWhat the hell was that,â Iwaizumi asks.
âI think I know what this is about,â Oikawa replies with a smile. âWait for me, Iâll be right back,â he adds, placing a soft kiss on Iwaizumiâs forehead before running out of the room.
He finds the spot easily; as he thought, the commotion was probably caused by those two guys kissing heâd seen earlier. He grabs the mistletoe from the ceiling and runs back to his boyfriendâs room.
âMistletoe?â Iwaizumi frowns at him in confusion, and all Oikawa does is nod.
âNumber one cause of public indecency,â he adds, holding the plant above Iwaizumiâs head. âOh! Mistletoe!â he feigns surprise. âSeems like Iâve got to do something about this!â
"Idiot,â Iwaizumi mumbles with a grin, welcoming the kiss anyway.
