Sub-Ohm Tank Maintenance Tips
So you’ve bought into (or back into, depending on how long you’ve been vaping) the clearomizer craze that’s been sweeping the vape world for the last year or so with the introduction of Sub-Ohm tank. While their plug-and-play nature makes them ideal for vapers uninterested in fiddling with their devices to dial in the ideal vape, they’re not entirely maintenance free. Let’s explore a few things to keep in mind.
Starting off on the right foot is instrumental to a long and rewarding relationship. After unboxing your new tank, take all the pieces apart, set the coil aside, and scrub everything with hot, soapy water. Some people like to soak the parts in alcohol overnight before rinsing in order to ensure any residual manufacturing materials have been washed away.
We’ve already covered this process in detail, but make sure you’re following it with every fresh coil to get the best performance and longest life out of your disposables. While new units can cost $3-4 or more, we’ve been lucky enough with some coils to get three weeks or more out of a single coil, much better performance than could ever be hoped when using last-generation clearos.
That first wash suggested above isn’t a one-time-only event – use coil changes (hopefully coming around the same time you empty your tank) as a time to clean your tank and its components. Hot, soapy water is probably sufficient this time around, but make sure to wash all the soap residue out. Cotton swabs can be handy to scrub and clean out nooks and crannies – they’re also handy to clear out residue from your drip tips or chimney (center tube) between cleanings.
Mind the 510 threads where your tank connects to the mod, too – one thing that’s universal to vaping is that juice will drip at some point, and it’ll work its way in everywhere. Going back to the cotton swabs again, dab one with a bit of rubbing alcohol and clean out the threads on your mod and tank, as well as the contact pin in the mod (make sure the cotton is just damp, not dripping wet) – buildup on your threads and contact pins can lead to power loss, excess wear on your batteries that decreases their life, and unwanted heat that quickly spreads. This is much more pronounced on mech mods (make sure you’re not running a hybrid connector if you’re using a tank and mech, this is the #1 cause of vape fires!), but keeping your regulated box clean is still a great idea.
