Its not from this week, but was taken this year and I felt was definitely worth sharing. I took this photo January this year, while living with my aunt in Georgia. Being a born and raised Floridian, being in the snow made me feel some type of way. I was overcome with so many surreal feelings. It was snowing, my first time seeing it at that, yet I didn’t feel cold. I was at such peace and have probably never felt so serene, yet the sky was so grey and all anybody did was complain about it. Going for a walk is what made the experience so dream-like and unearthly. This was the day I have felt the qualities of surrealism more than any other. Im glad I caught some of it on my phone.

Blog post 12 - “21 pilots”

Recently, I have come across a band that hooked me in from the first song I heard by them. They’re name is Twenty One Pilots and consists of 2 members - Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. All of their songs are poetry based. When its hard to fit in all the lyrics, Tyler raps them to get them in the song.

In one of my favorite songs, Kitchen Sink, the concept of purpose on this earth seems to be the key topic. He expresses his thoughts on how too many people question their purpose. Why they’re here and what their purpose is. Too many are saying “what’s the point.” When describing the bands logo, Tyler states:  “It doesn't have to be artistic, but if you create something and only you know the meaning of it, that's the beginning of purpose for you. When you're in the room by yourself trying to decide whether to stay alive, you can tell yourself "I should probably stay alive because I'm the only one who knows the meaning of that thing."  

I find value in this band in many different areas. It means so much to me and millions of others. They talk about the thoughts inside your head that many artists don’t feel comfortable putting into songs. They help me when I’m in a low place. It baffles me that a band could touch me in a way no music has, but still so many people will never want to give it a second listen. While it upsets me, it reminds me that that’s what makes us individuals.

A Show With Great Morals

In the semi-new and popular animated show, Bobs Burgers, there is much more than meets the eye. It is absolutely nothing like the Simpsons or something made by Seth MacFarlane, besides being an animation. You can’t tell entirely by watching one episode, but the show is mainly about family. The family feels like an actual family, not just a lose collection of comedic archetypes thrown together to try and cook up something hilarious. (ex: Family Guy) The show is hysterical, but can be touching when it wants to be. The main storyline is about Bob, just trying to run his Burger restaurant and support his kids. I believe Bob’s Burger’s moral values are well portrayed and convincing. And that is something you do not see on television too often nowadays.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Being the biggest museum in all of the US, its no wonder why this one is so popular. It hold inside of it over 2 million works, divided into 17 different conservation departments. Objects, paintings, paper, photography, textiles, scientific research, and so many other forms of art can be found here. It happens to be in the top 5 most visited museums in the world. After looking online, I found that the Asian art appealed to my aesthetics the most. With over 35,000 pieces, this collection dated back all the way to when the museum was founded in 1870. Different works of art, ritual pieces, and even functioning objects can be found there. This museum offers a pay what you wish policy, accepting donations. I plan on going this year when I am in New York for Christmas. It should be an exciting and semi-overwhelming art experience!

Psyched to watch Psycho

I’ve heard about the classic  1960′s movie Psycho, but never had the chance to watch it. While watching “the shower scene”, I noticed the main characters facial expressions were very dramatic. In the beginning, she seems stressed about money. She tears up the small paper full of numbers and decided to attempt to relax by showering. As soon as she starts the shower, her visage completely changes. Shes smiling and very at ease, almost letting you know something bad is about to happen. 

While shes bathing, still smiling, the camera zooms out so you can see a shadow slowly approaching the shower curtain. As soon as the killer pulls pack the curtain and shows his knife, loud and high pitched music starts to play to add effect. When he leaves her there to die, she slowly extends out her arm and falls over the edge of the tub. Dead. 

I enjoyed watching this clip a lot. It makes you think about how it must have felt to experience living in this time period, and how horrifying this movie must have seemed to its viewers. It makes me think about how far we’ve come with movie productions.

“Snow”

Walking through a field with my little brother Seth I pointed to a place where kids had made angels in the snow. For some reason, I told him that a troop of angels had been shot and dissolved when they hit the ground. He asked who had shot them and I said a farmer. Then we were on the roof of the lake. The ice looked like a photograph of water. Why he asked. Why did he shoot them. I didn't know where I was going with this. They were on his property, I said. When it's snowing, the outdoors seem like a room. Today I traded hellos with my neighbor. Our voices hung close in the new acoustics. A room with the walls blasted to shreds and falling. We returned to our shoveling, working side by side in silence. But why were they on his property, he asked.

In this poem, a boy and his younger brother are walking through the snow, and he starts telling him angels were shot in the snow and dissolved when they hit the ground. The younger brother asks, “Who shot them?” “Why did he shoot them?” “Why were they on his property?” I believe the theme in this poem could be religion, or even innocence. The angles trespassed on the farmers property and and thus were killed. So the speaker could believe that religion gets in the way of man’s actions.

The Perks of Charlie

Charlie is introduced as a 15 year old oncoming freshman. We come to learn he is the shy, unpopular type. I believe Charlie has the genuine characteristics of the Innocent archetype. His main goal in the story is to conquer happiness and it’s hard for him because he is constantly beat down and picked on. That is, until he meets two seniors at a football game he was attending alone. Sam and Patrick were welcoming Charlie with open arms from the get-go. They danced with him at a dance he was attending (alone) and took him to a party afterward. This was a turning point for Charlie. He got a small glimpse of happiness for the first time. They told him he was a wallflower, and there was nothing wrong with that. Throughout the story, Charlie undergoes a series of misfortunes and emotional struggles that make his quest for happiness very hard. “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” was written by Stephen Chbosky in 1999 and is still very popular (as it is now a movie) because teens of all ages can relate to Charlie in many ways. When he conquers happiness in the end, even when Patrick and Sam go away to college, he learns that being an outsider is okay and good people really do exist in the world.

Claire de Lune

I was truly moved by this piece of music. I found it beautifully put together, and it’s very hard to believe it’s all from one instrument. After closing my eyes and listening to it, I imagined a couple dancing outside under the stars. Perhaps the writer thought of it that way too, hence the songs title. This song gave me feelings of relaxation. It gives me the feeling that everything will be okay, especially in times of stress. I believe Debussy chose the piano because on any other instrument, it wouldn’t give the same harmonious tune. When listening to this song, I actually picked up my hula hoop and started to hoop-dance. Debussy made this song with such a mesmerizing flow, I don’t think anyone could listen to it and not want to slow dance or some sort of flow art.

Why I Look The Way I Look  - Paul Marcus Fuog

This piece was done by  Paul Marcus Fuog, and as soon as I saw it, I was drawn in. The picture is so aesthetically pleasing to me, and has much meaning to it. I believe the way a everyone dresses, does their hair(if they do), and presents them-self overall portrays who they are as a person. Just taking a small look at somebody, you can have an idea on their religion, maybe music taste (which says a lot about someone), and just their beliefs in general. “I Look The Way I Look Because Of The Way I Think” has 100% accuracy behind it, and I love the way the artist portrayed the message on a mirror. It gives the viewer a chance to look at themselves and question who they really are.

Why I Am Where I Am

After nineteen trips around the sun, I have found myself attending Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida and plan on transferring to the University of Florida. I’m originally born and raised in West Palm Beach, FL while living the hot and humid life. After graduating high school, it took me a few months to realize I needed a change in atmosphere and had to get out of WPB.

My favorite aunt owns this beautiful cabin in the mountainous small town of Blue Ridge, Georgia. So, January this year I decided to go live with her, only planning on staying 2-3 months, to get some piece of mind. Seven months later, I had an fun job I enjoyed, started painting, made great friends, got into the flow art of hoop-dancing, saved a lot of money, and even fell in love. It ended up being a lot harder to leave than planned, a sweet lady at the bank even said I got bit by the “Blue Ridge Bug”.

I told myself from the beginning I was going to go to school this fall, and I’m not one to back out of important decisions as such. It needed to be a school in Florida (in state fees vs out-of-state fees), and Santa Fe caught my eye. Its just about halfway from my hometown and new home-away-from-home. After looking at how greatly the school was rated, it wasn’t hard to decide. And that is the story on how I came about coming to Santa Fe. :)
