HIG: How often should a designer follow conventions versus risk an entirely new solution?
Chantal: It's not a matter of frequency, but of context. Whether or not a non-conventional solution is appropriate will depend on the problem being solved, the audience being served, the goals of the project and a myriad of other factors. There's no tidy answer, unfortunately.

HIG: Where do you find the balance between a design that’s all-encompassing versus a design that’s extremely specific?
Kylie: Find balance in whatever you find to be the best way to communicate the intended message. Focusing on this will naturally determine where your design should fall between ‘all-encompassing’ and ‘extremely specific’. That is, if the dichotomy exists at all. I'd say they are both, in fact, one and the same.

Sebastiaan: As icons are both a usability aid and a brand, the best icons walk a fine line between recognizable and unique. The best icons are both!

Kevin: If you're making something for people to use, you have to make it obvious and effortless. That's the distinction between design and art.

Ollin: Overall balance/hierarchy is the most important thing; that's what EVERYONE notices. Guides and grids only fix small problems, not big ones.

Dan: I’ve commonly found that something at its bare functionality is already aesthetically ideal. Design is more often a process of subtraction than addition.

Veerle: 97% of the time I use my own inspiration stream (http://veerle.duoh.com/inspiration/). It’s the place where I collect all the encounters that I find. It’s a mix of illustrations and photographs. The other 3% is from nature in stuff I see during my bike rides and document on my instagram account (http://instagram.com/veerlepieters).

Davey: Design with the user in mind. That means you sometimes have to let go of the prettier solutions for ones that make it easier for the user to reach their goal.
