Malachi x OC (Lita Mae Tate)

Childhood best friends to lovers to strangers to lovers (again): a lover's timeline.

Malachi and Lita met when he was 10 and she was 11 years old on the Southside of Riverdale. They became best friends very quickly.

They started dating when he was 15 and she was 16, attending Southside High together. Neither of them were affiliated at the time (that Lita knew of).

Lita's dream was to study art in New York after high school, but she always promised to never leave Mal behind.

Until he essentially forced her to.

Lita lived in NYC for 8 years, studying art and eventually falling in love with tattoo artistry.

She apprenticed under a very well known NY artist in her final year of undergraduate school and earned her MFA from Pratt.

On break from classes, she'd come home to visit Pop, but avoided the Southside when she could.

The one time she didn't another Serpent had told Lita that Mal was gone, that he left and that she should never try to find him again because he'd moved on.

She built up her clientele and eventually decided to move back home to Riverdale where she'd have to face her past head on at some point.

She'd been back for less than a week before she ran into her former love and realized that her feelings for him never waned.

She comes to find out Mal never left; he did a sbort stint in Shankshaw for drug running and that he had been initiated into the Ghoulies before she had even left for college.

Eventually, they talk about it. They talk about how neither of them had moved on despite trying to and part of the reason she came home was for him.

She learned to deal with the fact that he was a high ranking Ghoulie.

When the tensions settled, they decided to give it another try and things have been going swimmingly ever since. (The murmurs that she's half Jones slowly died down, too).

When Mal returned home after a weeklong run with the Ghoulies, the house was shrouded in darkness. He flicked the light switches up and down, but to no avail. He peeked into the kitchen -- there were no glowing numbers on the stove or microwave.

“Great,” he whispered to himself. “Lita?” he called out into the silence. “Are you home?”

He dropped his bag by the door and threw his studded leather jacket across a chair in the living room. It was just about sunset when he walked through the door, the entire house would be engulfed soon. 

He made his way to the back bedroom, not hearing a noise as he walked carefully throughout the house. He instinctively went to turn on the light when he opened the door, but still, there was no electricity. The room was bathed in a warm glow. Mal looked around to see four candles burning. By the pool of wax, he can tell they’ve been lit for at least a few hours. Lita is hunched over her sketchpad, trying to see what she’s doing, but he can see the frustration on her face.

“Kitten?” He asked as he made his way slowly toward her on the bed.

She looked up to him and smiled brightly. “You’re home,” she said with excitement as she put her drawing down and crawled toward him at the edge of the bed.

“Why are you sitting in the dark?” Even in the dark, he could see that she was practically naked -- nothing but a pair of red lace underwear and one of his old white tank tops. “And why are you so…”

“Transformer exploded, the whole block is out. I decided to challenge myself with drawing in the dark, but I am terrified to see what it looks like once we get power back. Also, it’s August and its hot," she laughed.

Mal kicked off his shoes and leaned down to kiss her. He started at her forehead and work his way to her lips. Lita lifted herself to meet him halfway and threw her arms around his neck and hummed against his lips.

“Y’know,” he started, “I can think of something much better to do in the dark,” he finished against the curve of her neck before scraping his teeth against her pulse point.

She sat in the diner for hours, hoping he’s reconsider and come find her so they could finish their conversation. She had thought about sitting in their booth, but she couldn’t. At least not tonight. She was packing up her backpack when the chime over the front door sounded; she didn’t look up.

“Lita?” Mal asked, spotting her at the counter. His voice was cautious as he slowly approached her.

She stiffened at the sound of the familiar voice. She had waited hours for him and he was finally there. She can feel her eyes prick with tears, but she shook them away, denying them their freedom. She turned around slowly. “Mal.”

She looked him up and down, spying the bruises on his hands and she wants to cry again, but doesn’t. It wasn’t the first time she’d seen him scraped up, but it was never because of violence. She takes a deep breath to calm herself.

“I’m sorry about earlier. I’m sorry about everything. We’ve both changed and we’re not the same people who fell in love as kids. But,” he paused taking a few careful steps toward her, “if you’ll still have me, maybe we can remeet each other -- start over. I shouldn’t have kept things from you. Ask me anything you want and I’ll tell you… I don’t know what you want me to do or say,” he said sounding defeated. “I’m pretty terrible at this,” he murmured.

A small smile fell to Lita’s lips after a while. “You’ve always been terrible at this.”

Maybe she'd made the wrong decision coming home. Maybe she left her life in New York to come back and it wasn't worth the sacrifice. The sacrifice of her career, her clientele, her stability. Maybe it was all for nothing.

He looked into her eyes for the first time since he’d stepped in the door. Just like that, she was a teenager again, head over heels in love with her best friend. 

Maybe it was for everything.

Some things: Lita Mae Tate

Violetta Mae “Lita” Tate didn't have an easy childhood. She was put up for adoption on the Southside a few months after she was born. 

Her mother, Jenny Jones, younger sister to FP Jones, was terrified of having a child at sixteen. FP was away in the army at the time and had no idea she was even pregnant, let alone gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. 

She grew up in the foster system with a nice family until she was nine. It was then that her foster father fell ill and they couldn't maintain her growing pains as well as father's illness.

It was then that Pop Tate stepped in to foster her and eventually, after all the paperwork and legal confusion, she was adopted at age twelve.

What Lita didn't know was that Pop had tried to convince Jenny to stay in the child’s life, but her father had threatened to disown her if she stayed or kept the baby. So, Jenny skipped town, leaving baby Lita on the doorstep of Riverdale General Hospital. 

Pop made it his mission to watch the girl grow up, to make sure she was cared for as she should be. He felt responsible in some way, though he knew the decision was entirely Jenny's.

When he heard of Lita's foster father falling ill, he raised her as his own. He kept her on the Southside, not wanting to sever the friendships and support she'd had there.

She was a model student and luckily never got trapped within the Ghoulie and Serpent affiliation or territory war.

She had made friends with everyone and because of who Pop Tate is, she was respected no questions asked.

She left for art school when she was seventeen, full scholarship. She had found a passion for the fine arts early on. Painting, drawing, illustration anything she could make she did. More often than not, her hands were stained from paints or markers.

After eight years (and two college degrees), she came back to Riverdale with a plan. There was a space for sale on the main drag of the Southside.

She opened a neutral zone, much like Pop's. MaeDay Designs by Violetta Tate. Walk-ins welcome, appointments appreciated. A legitimate tattoo shop.

All welcome. She didn't care if you were a Serpent or Ghoulie, as long as you weren't a total jackass. 

Pop raised her to have a heart of gold, but a voice that didn't back down. 

Lita would do anything to make Pop proud. He was after all, not just Pop Tate, but her dad.

‘What did you do, kid?’

Viper shrugs, leaning on the bars.

‘Does it matter?’ she argues. ‘Nowadays, they’ll just throw us Southsiders in if we even talk to a Northsider.’

The deputy nods, peeling an orange as he leans on the desk.

‘I’ve never seen you here,’ Viper states.

‘How often are you here for you to notice that?’ he counters.

Viper pushes herself off the bars, turning her back to the deputy to hide her smirk, not wanting to show he got her.

‘Deputy Anderson. I just moved here,’ he explains. ‘Found a badly beaten kid against a tree in Pickens Park first day I arrived,’ he adds, taking a wedge from his orange.

Viper turns around, shuffling her feet.

‘Some guy talked shit about my mom,’ she speaks. ‘And I threw a beer can at his head.’

Anderson raises his eyebrows.

‘They arrested you for throwing an empty beer can at a guy’s head?’

Viper shakes her head, her lips pressed.

’You threw a full beer can at a man’s head?’

‘An empty beer can just don’t do the trick,’ she jokes, causing Anderson to snort, covering his mouth.

‘So, how screwed am I?’ Viper asks.

‘Depends,’ he replies. ‘I’m thinking community service, maybe juvie, if it was on purpose,’ he explains, putting an orange wedge in his mouth.

Viper scoffs, her arms folded against her chest.

‘If it was on purpose?’

The deputy nods as he swallows, putting the rest of the orange on the desk.

‘I mean,’ he starts, rubbing his hands together. ‘Where did you get the beer can?’

‘From the tub?’ Viper answers, her eyebrows furrowed.

‘Which was filled with water and ice, I suspect?’

Viper nods, resting her hands on the bars, waiting for him to continue.

‘So, if you grabbed a beer can before you started to yell at him to-‘

He leans on his right, reading the form.

‘To “Go back to the North, you ugly shithead”, and you happen to use your hands a lot when you yell, the beer can could’ve just slipped out of your hand, and landed on his face by accident,’ he claims, smiling as he sees Viper’s bemused face.

‘You’re the weirdest cop I’ve ever met,’ she mentions. ‘You’re really giving me advice to get out of trouble?’

‘I’ve been here for a couple days now,’ he starts. ‘Caught up on the paperwork. Lots of murder, drugs-related murder, murder by relatives, a kid got shot in front of the station. An asshole having a beer can thrown at his head doesn’t seem so bad after reading all of that.’

Viper snorts, her eyes focused on the door.

‘Any chance you can become the new sheriff?’ she suggests.

Anderson laughs, getting back on his feet.

‘Sounds great,’ he admits. ‘But I have a feeling there might be other deputies who’d want to be sheriff, and they don’t want to lose to the newbie.’

The door opens, Minetta entering the room.

‘You’re free to go,’ he says, walking over to the cell. ‘Your mother’s here.’

‘Oh fuck,’ Viper mutters as Minetta opens the door. ‘Any advice about this, deputy Anderson?’

‘Stay out of trouble for a while,’ Anderson teases.

Viper is a snarky lesbian who I adore. Im also excited to see this friendship develop between her and deputy Anderson. Go give her some love!!!

21. Who are your OC’s closest relatives? - her grandfather is the only biological family she has left.

22. Who is/are your OC’s closest friend(s)? - other Southside OCs & Malachi

23. Who are the people your OC surrounds him/herself with? - the Ghoulies her age, but she’d rather surround herself with animals, so she pretty much never leaves home or the animal shelter she runs.

24. Who are the people your OC dislikes/hates? - the Serpents, mostly because she blames them as a whole for her parents dying.

25. If your OC has a soulmate, who is it? - Andy Parker (@dragonstone-fire ‘s OC)

26. Why does your OC and his/her soulmate work so well together? - Andy balances her out. Her default is anxious and he has helped her breakout of her shell and stand up for herself instead of just letting things happen. On the other hand, Andy can be a little bit of a hothead, so when he needs it, she balances him as well.

27. What are some things your OC admires about his/her soulmate? - Andy is always willing and able to speak his mind.

28. How did your OC and his/her soulmate meet? - they met by accident. Andy was at the House of the Dead when Ollie ran in looking for someone but he was the only one there and offered to help. The rest is history.

29. What is your OC’s level of education? - she is working on her vet tech degree.

30. Did your OC participate in extracurricular activities, and if so, what were they? - she tried to, but she was very often bullied in school, so she just hung out in the library.

31. What is your OC’s opinion of school?  What kind of student was s/he? - Ollie was pretty focused on school; she did well in her courses; as an institution, she hated high school, mostly because of her jerkoff classmates.

32. What subjects did your OC excel at? - science and math were her jam.

33. What subjects interested your OC? - she was terrible at it, but she liked art. She’s more of a right/wrong, 2+2 always equals 4 kinda learner.

34. What is your OC’s dream job and/or current profession? - Her dream is to work as a vet at the San Diego Zoo, specifically with the big cats.

35. How is your OC working towards his/her dream job and/or achieved his/her current profession? - she currently runs the animal shelter on the Southside, she’s in school working toward a vet tech degree until she can save enough money for vet school

36. What are your OC’s thoughts/opinions of his/her current profession? - she loves running the shelter, its her baby. 

37. What is your OC’s biggest dream? - to get out of Riverdale without any further damage.

38. How does your OC react to and handle stress? - not well, at all. She pretty much shuts down under too much stress. She is quick to panic and unless she can get her wits about her quickly, she’s rendered useless for a while after a spiral.

39. How does your OC handle anger? - as stupid as it sounds, she doesn’t believe in anger. She thinks its a useless emotion, but usually when she’s angry or frustrated, she cries. She hates that she does.

40. How does your OC handle grief? - pretty much the same as any other negative emotion. Its not great. Andy is working on it with her.

Ollie Wren had been working tirelessly to get everything set up in their new apartment while her boyfriend was off on a run with the Ghoulies. She had no idea when Andy would be home. It had been a few days and normally she'd hear from him by now. Even just a Hey. We're safe. Talk soon.

The last point of contact had been three days earlier and Ollie was well passed worried. She was getting frantic. She threw herself into work at the animal shelter, into getting all of their boxes unpacked and situated for when he returned home.

Andy Parker came into Ollie's life so unexpectedly and now she doesn't know what she'd do without him in her life. He was her first real everything--date, kiss, love, all of it and everything in between. 

He'd taught her to embrace her quirkiness, how to handle life without as much flailing, how to love herself and the world around her, even if it was kind of cruel. 

Every time her phone chimed, her heart raced hoping it would be Andy or even Malachi just so she knew they were alive. Ghoulie runs could be dangerous and they were never gone longer than four days. It had been double that. 

In that eight days, she'd transported their furniture and boxes to the new place. Painted. Unpacked. Arranged. Rearranged. Decorated. Read three books. But she's barely slept. She couldn't. Her dreams wouldn't let her. Behind her eyelids flashed images of him hurt or worse and she couldn't handle that, not even in a dream state. 

By day nine, she was curled up in the oversized chair by the window, a blanket over her lap and a book propped open on her thigh. She heard the front door handle rattle and she bolted up. Her book went flying and she almost knocked over the coffee cup sitting next to her. 

Her heart was racing as she approached the front door to see Andy standing there in front of her. She nearly burst into tears seeing her, squeezing them shut and reopening them a few times just to be sure it was really him.

“Andy?” she was barely able to say. Her voice was rough and she realized she hadn't really spoken out loud in at least a day.

“Hey, hon,” his lips quirked into an awkward smile. He tossed his backpack to the ground and took the few steps to Ollie and wrapped her into a hug. “God, I missed you.”

“Where have you been? I haven't heard from you in days.”

“I know. I'm sorry. Things went a little sideways and we had to lay low for a few days before we could come home. But that doesn't matter, I'm home now.”

She was so thankful he was. Her exhaustion hit her all at once and the sob that wracked through her body rattled through to the bone. He cooed in her ear, trying to soothe her, but nothing was working. She was just so tired. 

Andy placed his hands at her shoulders and took a good look at her. She watched his eyes roam her face and her hands. 

“Don't take this the wrong way, but when was the last time you slept?”

“What day is it? Tuesday?”

“It's Saturday.”

Her eyes widened at the realization that she hadn't slept more than cat naps for five days. It made sense, she thought. She didn't want to sleep in their apartment for the first time without him next to her. It didn't seem fair. She had made the bed, but that was the last time she even touched it. She nearly collapsed into her, the build up taking her over. 

“Hey. Come lie down with me.”

She nodded against his chest and slowly pulled herself from his warmth. She walked them into their bedroom and sat herself on the edge of the mattress.

“I hope you don't mind that I unpacked and decorated while you were gone. I needed something to keep me distracted,” she yawned.

“Its beautiful baby,” he said stripping off his jacket, boots and jeans. He pulled the shirt off from over his head and walked toward Ollie. He lifted her arms up and took off her shirt.

He walked to his side of the bed and sat down, pulling Ollie close to him, pressing her back to his chest. The skin to skin contact was comforting for her. She'd always responded well to tactile comfort. He smoothed his hand down her arm and he settled around her waist. 

She yawned again and she felt him pressing kisses to her shoulder, whispering sweet words into her skin.

“I'm so happy you're home,” Ollie whispered, her eyes fluttering closed. She was surrounded by his warmth and she could feel sleep closing in quickly.

They didn't wake up again until the next morning.

Olive Patrice Wren’s nicknames are: Ollie, Liv, and Wrenegade; Ollie, a childhood nickname from her mom and dad; Liv is what she calls herself in her endless internal monologue; Wrenegade based on her last name, given to her by the Ghoulies when she eventually joined.

What is the color of your OC’s eyes/hair/skin? -

blue eyes, sometimes gray depending on the lighting/her mood; naturally dark brown hair, but she’s taken to dying it blue/green; skin is fair.

How tall is your OC? -

 5′2″

What is a noticeable physical attribute of your OC? -

she’s a tiny, anxious bean. her makeup is usually light/natural or none at all.

What does your OC normally wear? What would your OC wear on a special night? -

Ollie has a collection of nerd clothes. She loves pop culture and generally nerdy-type things; flannel and jeans -- anything overall comfortable. On a special occasion, she has a collection of flowy sundresses or maxis, which are always paired with converse unless she absolutely has to wear something else on her feet.

What is one word you would use to describe your OC’s appearances? -

quirky

Does your OC have any markings, such as a birthmark or a scar? -

she has a scar on her right knee from surgery when she was little, a larger than average smooth heart-shaped scar from a poisonous spider bite from when she was a baby. other than that, nothing unless you count a few tattoos.

How does your OC talk/what does your OC’s voice sound like? -

her voice is naturally quiet. she doesn’t much care to raise her voice unless absolutely necessary. people tell her she has a slight accent, but she doesn’t hear it.

What does your OC’s bedroom look like?  His/her living area? -

Ollie’s room is a collection of her nerdy interests and books and pillows. She has an over-sized chair and little table by her window for reading. She contemplated just putting her coffee pot in there, but she figured it wouldn’t be healthy to

 leave her bedroom.

she keeps a photo album and a few trinkets from her parents in a locked draw in her nightstand. she misses them dearly and its about all she has left of them.

12. What is your OC’s relationship with his/her father? -

11 & 12 go hand in hand. Ollie’s parent’s both died in a territory riot when she was ten years old, but before that, she had a wonderful relationship with her parents. She misses them dearly, but she is still very close with her grandfather, who has custody of her.

How many siblings does your OC and what is his/her relationship with them? -

Ollie is an only biological child, but if you count the Ghoulies as family, there’s a lot of them. 

Who is the mother and/or father figure in your OC’s life? -

her Grandfather has been the father figure in her life since she was ten. 

What was your OC’s childhood like? -

it was wonderful. Both of her parents were Ghoulies, but they always made sure to keep Ollie out of it. They had weekly movie nights and took day trips over the summer; days spent at Sweetwater River. It was all very normal.

What is your OC’s strongest childhood memory? Why and how as that impacted him/her? -

the night of the riot; Ollie was home with her grandfather when her parents went to defend Ghoulie territory. She heard the bang of something explode and when her parents never came home, she knew what happened. to this day, she can’t watch or hear fireworks without spiraling in panic.

What is your OC’s imagination like? -

it is wild. mostly in the way that let’s her convince herself of the worst case scenario.

she was born and raised on the Southside, they never moved.

Ollie likes kids, she prefers animals, but she thinks she could handle having one or two if the right person came along.

overly cautious; borderline helicopter, but nervous because its her natural state of being mostly - adding a kid to the mix would probably just increase that
