April 27, 2025 - Ka Daisy, an NPA guerrilla and trans woman, was martyred after a confrontation with security forces in Barangay Tapi, the Philippines.

She was known for teaching literacy and math to members of her squad who were uneducated and always carrying a make-up kit in her guerilla supplies. May she rest in power. [video]/[video]

for further context, the NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, which has been engaged in armed and unarmed, underground and aboveground, struggle against fascist and bourgeois-liberal dictatorships in the Philippines for over 60 years now. though the NPA's presence is mostly limited to rural areas, the CPP and its popular front and youth wings are active all throughout the Philippines.

more than just fighting the state powers, they are actively engaged in improving the conditions of the rural peasantry and the urban workers and semiproletariat (they were involved, for example, in the jeepney drivers strike a year or two ago). the NPA stands for New Peoples' Army, but in certain areas where they either hold power or are living among the peasantry, they're called the "Nice Peoples' Army". they live and work along with the villages they're staying in, and help feed and teach the people

their line on LGBT rights is one of the most advanced out of any communist formation worldwide. they hold that the liberation of gay and trans people cannot be achieved without the liberation of the proletariat and peasantry, and vice versa. they've held this line for a long time - they were fighting for trans people back when most other left-wing parties (such as the RCP, pre-Avakian-cult) held reactionary positions on their role in society. here's an article with more context on gay and trans people in the CPP.
