Stunning Conversations

I decided to document these passing conversations I encountered at my destination.

The travel destination was filled with diverse conversations.

I embarked on a trip to Belgium with my friends from Turkey. Brussels had a beautiful square. Upon entering, the sound of vibrant bells filled the air. The weather was exceptionally pleasant. During my previous winter trips to Europe, I often encountered cloudy skies, so it was refreshing to see the square basked in sunlight after a long time. The square was bustling with people. In a few days, 2021 would come to an end, and I wondered how I would feel about the new year in this place.

Entering a café, I heard someone say, "Bonjour!" in French. Belgium is a place where French is commonly spoken. My friend from France effortlessly placed an order. I, on the other hand, ordered in English. I opted for a sandwich. Through the café window, I observed the streets of Brussels. The weather soon turned cloudy again. It seemed that sunny days in Europe didn't last long. Conversations began to unfold, and I thought of capturing these passing exchanges at my destination.

One of my Turkish friends brought up a topic. "Is your country's currency stable?" He mentioned how the Turkish exchange rate fluctuated. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the political leadership, stating that the consequences of poor economic management by the country's leaders could be catastrophic. It intrigued me. The difference in currency value was something I had only experienced when exchanging money, but for my friends, it directly affected their lives. I heard stories of the hardships caused by fluctuations in currency value.

Over the next few days, the value of the Turkish currency sharply declined, throwing the national economy into turmoil. My friends even suggested that now is the best time to visit Turkey. With the devaluation of the Turkish currency, one could travel relatively well with the same amount of money. Indeed, the euro had much higher purchasing power in Turkey compared to Germany. Similar products could be bought for about half the price.

The travel destination offered various conversations. I engaged in a discussion with my friend, who was an exchange student in Spain. We talked about people's indifference towards COVID-19 quarantine policies. "South Korea has very strict measures, and everyone is vigilant about it," he remarked. The conversations I encountered during my travels made me reminisce about Korea. As the sun set, night approached swiftly. The last day of 2021 in Belgium passed by in this manner.

The Grand Place Square, situated in the heart of the city, showcased a dazzling light performance. Excited for the New Year's countdown, we patiently waited in the square. However, it appeared that the New Year's event had been canceled due to the pandemic. Leaving behind a sense of disappointment, we made our way back to our accommodations, and the light performance commenced. The unexpected encounter with the illuminating spectacle at Brussels Square on New Year's Day was truly magnificent.

If You're Alive

As I embarked on my journey through Europe, moments of walking naturally led to engaging conversations.

Genuine and unhindered conversations. It was possible.

During my visit to Paris, I sought a company within the travel community. By sharing my itinerary and location, I was able to connect with individuals who had similar plans. On this occasion, a friend of mine, who was of the same age, reached out to me. Let's call her A. A was studying in Germany and had been to Paris before. We decided to embark on this trip together, expecting wonderful weather and unforgettable experiences.

As we walked through the streets of Paris, conversation flowed naturally, filling the long days of exploring that often surpassed 30,000 steps. We delved into topics ranging from politics, society, and the environment to spirituality and beyond. I found joy in asking thought-provoking questions at each destination, as the answers often presented a whole new perspective, distinct from my own. The conversations we shared during our exploration of Paris, France, transformed the city into an unforgettable space.

The openness and honesty of our conversations stemmed from our willingness to share pieces of our lives. We have talked to each other without hesitation, and the books each has read before became a prominent topic of discussion. A was an avid reader, consuming around 80 books a year. Despite my relatively smaller bookshelf, I recommended books that had left a lasting impression on me. A listened intently, showing genuine interest in my stories.

Located near the Pont Neuf Bridge, Shakespeare and Company is a bookstore that has been enchanting readers since 1919. It remains a vibrant hub of ideas, with post-it notes adorning its walls. Adjacent to the bookstore is a cozy café, where people gather to discuss the books they have just bought. Observing them, I contemplated the power of writing.

"If you're alive, you have to write." Writing allowed me to piece together and organize my world. Sharing fragments of my worldview during conversations brought me immense joy. It was during these captivating exchanges that I found connections between various life experiences, gradually painting a vivid picture over time. The moments when conversations sparked with fascination were akin to appreciating each other's artworks.

This journey to Paris reaffirmed the importance of continuously stepping out of our comfort zones. The beauty I encountered during my travels was not solely derived from the grandeur of the scenery itself, but rather from the unconscious contrasts it created with specific aspects of my own life. In Paris, these unconscious comparison occurred frequently, sparked by passing movie scenes and igniting diverse conversations.

Musical

In my eyes, they represented different forms of love.

I already knew what the next scene would be, but the scenes before me felt always new. 

I watched the musical Les Misérables for the first time. I had previously encountered this work in a movie, and it had touched me deeply. The fact that it was presented as a musical added a refreshing mood to the experience. The performances by the actors were outstanding, and I was captivated by the various ways in which the characters lived amidst the backdrop of the French Revolution. In my eyes, they represented different forms of love: love for justice, love driven by desire, love for children, and love for a better life.

From that moment, I longed to visit London and witness the magic of Les Misérables in person. I discussed this plan with my mom during a trip to Italy last year. We contemplated the idea of extending our journey to England. We would take a plane and attend a musical. However, as I was serving in the military at the time, traveling to England was restricted by regulations. I had to abide by the rules and couldn't fulfill my dream of experiencing Les Misérables in London. It left me feeling deeply disappointed.

Preparing for my trip to England, the most crucial wish was to watch Les Misérables. Other plans and schedules seemed trivial in comparison. I believed that witnessing the musical live at a London theater would be an immensely moving experience. So, I booked a ticket for 75£. I watched the movie again and even read the original novel by Victor Hugo to refresh my memory before attending the musical.

The day of the trip arrived, and it felt like destiny was finally on my side. I reached Soho, and the night streets of London displayed their enchanting beauty. December in London was adorned with vibrant decorations, proudly proclaiming the arrival of Christmas. I boarded a red double-decker bus, navigating through the bustling crowds until we reached the theater. Standing in line, I noticed a large poster adorning the theater, igniting my anticipation that soon, I would have an unforgettable memory.

Les Misérables possessed a unique charm. One particular scene stood out: detector Javert's pivotal decision to capture Jean Valjean. The stage backdrop, coupled with a projector, created a mesmerizing visual of Javert descending from top to bottom. It was a creative production that left a lasting impression. Although the stage was quite distant, I held my head up high, fighting back tears of joy. Finally, I was witnessing the musical I had yearned for all along.

As the musical finished, the audience erupted in cheers, offering a standing ovation. The actors acknowledged the applause with bright smiles. Les Misérables had become a remarkable milestone in my life. Although I already knew what the next scene would entail, the moments before me remained eternally fresh and new. The narrative of Jean Valjean, transforming from a vessel of hatred to a life fueled by love, will forever dwell in my heart.

When Your Favorite Travel Destination Changes

London, basking in the sunlight, was a work of art in itself.

Florence had always been my cherished travel destination. However, circumstances led to a moment of transition of my favorite from Florence to London.

Lockdown measures were implemented just as I had planned my trip to England. Until a few days ago, the COVID-19 situation seemed relatively manageable, with no PCR tests required. Unfortunately, the rapid spread of the Omicron variant prompted the British government to announce new guidelines: all incoming travelers must take PCR testing upon arrival and self-quarantine until they receive negative results. With only a week remaining, I found myself in a state of confusion, altering everything planned including the date for the Les Misérables musical.

On December 1, 2021, the South Korean government imposed mandatory quarantine measures for all domestic entrants. The situation changed rapidly, and I began to worry about the feasibility of future travels. The Omicron variant began to spread, affecting my plans to visit countries outside of Germany. The trip was just days away, leaving me with little room for adjustments. However, instead of dwelling on what I couldn't change, I decided to focus on what I could.

I have heard a lot of news of canceled trips within the community I had to postpone my exchange student program by two semesters. The resurgence of COVID-19 in December 2021 made me contemplate whether this moment could be my last chance. In the face of hesitation and potential regret, I infused a sense of urgency into my trip, realizing that the time to embark was now. Fear would not deter me; I resolved to confront the challenges head-on rather than surrender.

Upon arrival at Stenstead Airport in the UK, I promptly underwent a PCR test, adhering to the British government's regulations. It was essential to submit negative results to proceed with my travel plans. Anxiously awaiting the outcome, I marveled at the pleasant weather and made my way to the accommodation. London, illuminated by the sun, captivated me, prompting a shift in my favorite destination from Florence to this vibrant city. Despite the complexity of my thoughts, the streets exuded undeniable beauty.

Finally, the test results were announced, confirming my negative status. With a liberated mind, I strolled through the enchanting streets of London. The shimmering cityscape was a sight to behold. Despite rain approaching, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square were beautiful. I ventured through the streets until late into the night, immersing myself in the essence of London. In crowded spaces, masks were necessary, yet even amid the Omicron resurgence, the city teemed with people.

I fulfilled my dream of watching Les Misérables, a musical I had longed to see. As each act concluded, the audience erupted in applause. Overwhelmed with emotion, I felt privileged to be part of this theatrical experience. The dedication of the actors, the intricate stage sets in motion, and the resounding standing ovation from the crowd created an indelible memory within me. London in December held a special place in my heart, where anxiety and happiness intertwined amidst the sudden resurgence of COVID-19.

On the Border between Memory and Enjoyment

The answer to most questions lies somewhere in between the two options.

Rather than relying on a high-performance and heavy camera, I contemplated whether a lightweight camera with lower performance would be proper for me.

I often find myself standing on the border between recording my experiences and simply enjoying them while traveling. In February 2020, during my time in Italy, I held a camera in my hands. I pondered whether to capture the breathtaking scenery through my own eyes or through the lens of the camera. In the end, I found myself pressing the shutter incessantly. Unfortunately, I couldn't fully relish the moment of recording, fearing that I might have neglected the act of experiencing the trip itself.

The worries start right from the moment you leave your house. With the weight of the camera, I wondered if an iPhone camera would be enough. As the performance of iPhone cameras improved, and the gap between them and professional cameras diminished, these concerns grew deeper. Should I sell my professional camera? This idea persisted while a camera always hung from my shoulder. I believed I couldn't let such once-in-a-lifetime moments slip away without efforts to record them.

At the flea market, I acquired various items free of charge. Among them there were a black leather jacket and some candles. No special process was required; I could simply enter a building on the Goethe University campus, have a look on the items, and take them with me. While looking for some stuff, I stumbled upon a camera. I had little hope for it to function. It appeared to be broken.

Upon returning home, I charged the battery and powered it on. Surprisingly, it made a sound. I pressed the shutter, and it took a photo. It was incredible. I knew I would spend a lot of time with this camera. It was lightweight and simple. The image quality wasn't outstanding, but it had a touch of emotion. The scenery viewed through the small screen appeared different. Perhaps what I needed was a lightweight camera with lower performance, rather than a heavy, high-performance one.

During a trip to Darmstadt with my friends, as expected, the camera encountered issues. The battery drained quickly. Sometimes it would turn off after just a few shots. After reconnecting the battery and restarting it, I could use it again, but just for a few minutes. I observed the scenery closely, knowing that my time to capture it was limited. I aimed to capture only the most precious moments.

I initially believed there was a definitive answer to my question, but most answers reside somewhere in between the available options. The camera I stumbled upon was lighter and smaller than my professional one. It has less pressure on me. The solution to my dilemma was not to choose between recording memories and enjoying, but rather to reduce the burden. I focused on the present moment, creating a comfortable documentation—a record that I could manage.

Definite Happiness

I never realized that there could be a price to pay for the value of precious moments.

If each line is unchangeable and certain, what should I pursue?

Upon arriving in Germany as an exchange student, I experienced a brief period of happiness, only to realize a significant truth. The feelings I have during my exchange program will soon come to an end. While I have the opportunity to explore and experience many things, there is a time limit. Wasting time could mean missing out on crucial opportunities. This realization instilled in me an obsession to seize maximum happiness in the present moment. I consider myself fortunate to have a year-long stay here, rather than just a semester.

I embark on a trip every week, and compared to traveling from Korea to the same destinations, the costs here are relatively low. This is why many adults advised me to travel during this period, even if it meant accumulating some debt. Consequently, weekends hold immense value for me. I yearn to find happiness in numerous places, but it requires careful planning, which in turn demands a significant amount of time. I was always desperate for more time.

Another challenge was the lack of financial resources. Setting aside anly around 100 euros per month for travel expenses was feasible, excluding essential costs such as monthly dormitory rent and insurance premiums. I continued online tutoring and saved money as much as possible. However, these efforts fell far short of covering the expenses. Even the cheapest hostel for a two-night, three-day trip would cost around 50 euros. Ultimately, I had to cut down on daily living expenses, but there were numerous opportunities in my daily life that I didn't want to miss.

I had to ponder on what was truly important to me. To gain something, I had to boldly relinquish something else. Vague sacrifices lead to a state of ambiguity where nothing feels right. There seemed to be a certain know-how in identifying and obtaining what you desire. I began to believe that happiness lies within oneself. One must strive their hardest and find contentment in their accomplishments. This time holds even greater significance because it is finite.

During my high school days, I envisioned myself living abroad as a student. Back then, I was enamored with the allure of a liberated life, and I never considered that the emotions I would experience as an exchange student were temporary. I didn't even think that there would be a price to pay for the privilege of experiencing things I had never seen before in my life, on my own. Now, I realize that there is something I have to pay for new experiences: consideration, plan, and financial management.

I sketch the canvas of my desire. However, when I paint my life with a brush, each stroke becoming potentially the last, it is only natural for a sense of urgency to arise. Each stroke represents fleeting happiness. If I only have a limited time of one year to complete a single painting, how should I fill the canvas? What colors and shapes can I use to ensure no regrets are left behind?

On the border between language and culture

I did not know that European education system also has the deficiencies in English education.

I observe Korea from outside its borders.

Learning a new language is exceedingly challenging. Despite its imperfections, it took a considerable amount of time for my English communication skills to reach a satisfactory level. Thirteen years, to be exact, spanning six years of elementary school, three years of middle school, three years of high school, and my first year of college, where I struggled through English assignments and presentations. During this time, I discovered no particular method except exposing myself in the language as often as possible. I had no choice but to speak, listen, read, and write regularly.

My journey with the German language has been relatively short. It consisted of only three years in high school. Most people I encounter in Germany speak English fluently, but there are instances where I have to comprehend German. At present, I still understand only half of it. Immediately after arriving in Germany, I eagerly changed the language settings of all my devices to German. However, alas, I couldn't navigate them properly. I switched back to English. It seems that I will need to invest a significant amount of time into mastering German as well.

During the semester, Goethe University provides German language courses for exchange students. Students from various countries, including Slovakia, Italy, France, Turkey, Ukraine, and Japan, come together. They communicate primarily in German. Everyone is on an equal position since it is an unfamiliar language to all of them. I find myself learning German from a similar standpoint. It's enjoyable to get acquainted with one another through the medium of German and get closer. I didn‘t feel lonely.

One of my friends, A, is of French nationality. A shared insights about English education in France, noting that the focus is more on teaching how to write in English rather than speaking English. A sometimes faces teasing from other friends due to struggling with English. European countries, too, seem to be unaware of the shortcomings in English education. This reminds me of Korea, where I had numerous opportunities to read complex texts but limited chances to practice spoken English. It's inevitable that our English communication skills might falter.

Naturally, I gained exposure to the cultures of other countries. I exchanged thoughts on the perspectives of young people and share aspects of my own culture. I asked a friend from Türkiye, "Why are people so enthralled by K-pop?" Her response surprised me, "It's not just about the music. People are captivated by the culture. I appreciate not only the fashion choices of K-pop idols but also their ideologies and lifestyles." It was an unexpected answer.

I have never experienced my own culture from an external perspective. Meeting friends from other countries allows me to objectively observe my own culture. Throughout this experience, I have taken pride in witnessing the spread of Korean culture worldwide. Here, I can directly inquire about the reasons behind this phenomenon. It not only evokes a sense of pride but also provides me clarity. I observe Korea while being outside of Korea.

Consideration

Traveling is a reflection of life itself. It is during my travels that I have come to realize this truth. 

„Consider desperately, enjoy life slowly.“

To embark on a journey, one must contemplate and make decisions. What do I desire? What am I willing to sacrifice? With ample resources, almost anything can be obtained. However, in situations where resources are limited, choices must be made. Gathering information becomes crucial, as does distinguishing between what is essential and what is not. Preparation is key. Understanding oneself becomes paramount. It is essential to know what experiences one seeks.

During my visit to Cologne, Germany, it happened to be a holiday. Unfortunately, it was a rainy day, and most shops were closed. My friends were unable to join me due to the circumstances. Despite this, I ventured forth impulsively, driven by the notion that I should embark on a journey at least once a week. But what exactly did I desire? Upon arriving in Cologne, all I encountered were a grand cathedral, closed shops, and gloomy weather. Was it necessary to ponder over when we would attain our desires?

The word "travel" encompasses various meanings. Without contemplating the kind of journey one wishes to undertake, it becomes difficult to find fulfillment. Each person has their own criteria, whether it be food, culture, or weather. Merely embarking on a journey impulsively can lead to a sense of complacency. Self-awareness is crucial. Additionally, gathering information about the destination is always essential. It made me contemplate my preferences and consider what I wished to gain from my travels.

If one fails to contemplate deeply, they will find themselves at the mercy of popular tourist attractions. I found myself unsure of what to do. I marveled at the cathedral standing proudly in front of the train station and requested a passerby to capture me in a photograph. Regretting the overcast weather, I endured the chilling wind. Later, I indulged in the famous Kölsch beer and relished churros. I also visited the renowned perfume shop, EAU DE COLOGNE, where I mistakenly purchased wet wipes, assuming they were a type of perfume.

Life bears similarities to this experience. Without contemplating our desires, we cannot expect to stumble upon what we truly seek. Acting without thoughtful consideration hinders our ability to gain happiness. Hence, it becomes imperative to reflect on our desires and determine the avenues through which they can be achieved. It is not life itself that should be fierce, but rather the process of contemplating and addressing concerns. Intense contemplation gives rise to a relaxed life. This has become somewhat of a personal motto for me, which was derived from my travels.

It has been a considerable amount of time since my last journey. I now feel as though I am embarking on a trip that I have yet to experience. Nevertheless, embarking on a journey demands profound contemplation. There is much to prepare. It is not about attaining everything; rather, it involves deep contemplation while simultaneously relinquishing compulsion. It is not an obsession. This approach may well be the attitude one should adopt towards life itself. Life is a voyage, and travel is an embodiment of life.

Story

One of the benefits of being an exchange student is the wealth of stories.

"Encountering a different world was both delightful and sorrowful."

Being an exchange student offers the opportunity to hear vivid stories shared by friends living in the host country. It was better than the structured narratives presented in the news. It also allows for the exchange of highly subjective tales with friends from diverse nations. In a spur-of-the-moment decision, I embarked on a train journey one Sunday. Nürnberg left me with an intriguing memory.

The memory was formed during the train ride. We engaged in conversations about our respective countries, delving into topics related to Korea. My friends, with great interest, asked about my military service. "How many years are you required to serve in the army?" "Wasn't it frightening to potentially go to war?" "Wasn't South Sudan a dangerous place?"

I found this situation peculiar, which is the fact that I had to fulfill mandatory military service for a meager salary and tolerate violence. Observing my friends' reactions to this story reminded me of their expressions when they heard stories about North Korea. In such moments, you come to realize that it is no different for them—an estranged nation burdened by the constant threat of war. I mentioned that we have numerous issues, and that is precisely why we yearn for peace.

My friends were thoughtful. They were careful with their choice of words to ensure they didn't come across as racist. They were respectful, considerate, and empathetic. However, this didn't prevent me from feeling intrigued. I continued discussing my country, my culture, both on and off the train. Although I was physically in Nürnberg, I also encountered Italy, France, and Switzerland. In a sense, they also experienced a story of Korea.

I spoke aloud on the train, also I got asleep on the train. It was when I was heading towards the restroom that a passenger on the train said something to my back of the head. I couldn't comprehend the subsequent German words spoken. Yet, I understood that they perceived me as Japanese. As a foreigner in that setting, the best course of action was to pretend I hadn't heard anything. Meeting a different world brought both joy and sadness.

Nürnberg was exquisite, and there was another reason that made it memorable. I embarked on a journey with a foreign world, and through language, we connected and got to know each other. I gained an unfamiliar perspective on my own culture. It was an experience distinct from observing it while being part of that culture. It was the invaluable insight gained from an external vantage point. This, I believe, will remain in my mind even after I return to Korea.

Like Air

Thinking about the meaning of a family is possible through its absence.

Will I be as same as past when I go back to my home or will the absence still remain in the mind and cherish its preciousness.

As an exchange student in Europe, I have been thinking a lot about my family and what they mean to me. The absence of their physical presence has made me appreciate their value more than ever before.

The reason why I want to write about family is simple. In other countries, the meaning of family comes to a greater extent. For example, during Chuseok, a Korean holiday, I transferred my money for my family, even though I know that they will send back more than I gave them. This gesture was to convey the fact that I am still connected to my family.

My mom recently contacted me to say that she saw news about the Hanbit unit. It made me think about when I was in South Sudan and how I am now in Germany, away from my family during Korean holidays named Chuseok in both 2019 and 2021. Being away from home has made me contemplate the meaning of family and appreciate its value more deeply.

I want to thank my family for their love and respect, also for not restraining me. When I told my mother that I was going to South Sudan, she said, "I really hope you can go. It's an opportunity that never comes again." When I told her that I was going to Germany as an exchange student, she said, "You must not lose your chance" Through these experiences, I have learned that love is not about restraint, and I appreciate my family for their understanding and support.

Since I have been living in Germany, I have realized that time goes by faster here than it does in Korea. Maybe it is because I am doing things that were previously taken care of by my family, such as laundry, dishes, and cooking. I have had to learn new things, like looking up German words in a dictionary to buy ingredients, and managing my own budget. However, it has also been liberating myself from interference and to be able to arrange my space the way I want it. This experience has made me appreciate the benefits of living independently.

Although I am enjoying my time in Germany, I can't help but think of my family, especially my mother. Even though we are physically separated, I still feel connected to her. When the air suddenly disappears, it is the moment when we truly understand the absence of it. I wonder if I will be as same as past when I go back to my home or will the absence still remain in the mind and cherish its preciousness.

Quitfortable

Courage set me free - the courage to liberate myself from my own desires. 

When I was in Germany as an exchange student, every time I try to achieve everything, I achieved nothing.

During my stay, I learned the art of emptiness. I arrived with the earnest desire to have experiences, and make friends. However, I was hoping for too much. I missed the most important time of my life because I wanted to get everything, and in the end, I got nothing.

I learned that it is not easy to reject various needs in life. If you want to stay in shape , gain professional experience, and learn German at the same time, you will miss out on everything. You can't concentrate on everything; therefore, prioritization is essential. I pondered on what is most valuable to me and restructured my life based on that priority.

Decision-making takes time, and excessive worry can be counterproductive. I let go of my desire to be perfect and embraced every precious opportunity that came my way. I cleared my schedule and organized my daily life around the things that mattered most. I realized that the trip ahead was more important than my to-do list. To achieve my goals, I had to move my body.

One day, I woke up with the sunshine through the window in my room. I had a refreshing shower, made pasta with my preferred ingredients, and spent a leisurely afternoon. It took courage - the courage to set myself free from my desires. This was something only I could decide. It dawned on me that I had been punishing myself and even unconsciously mentally torturing myself in the past.

I went on a weekend trip and left only the bare minimum on my to-do list. I had to put my mind at rest and enjoy the moment. I realized that it was okay to enjoy this moment and that going on a trip was the most valuable thing for me in Germany. I focused on the things I wouldn't get after a year. I learned not to stress when my plans didn't go as intended. This moment was mine to enjoy.

During my Europe tour, I discovered the joy of living a relaxed daily life, free from the hustle and bustle. I enjoyed the beauty of Heidelberg, which felt like a fairytale. I encountered people who had been playing musical instruments or drawing pictures in the streets. The atmosphere was quite different from Korea. Additionally, Germany is a paper-loving country, and it is easy to find people reading paper books not only in bookstores but also on public transportation, cafes, and anywhere on the street.

Life of Solitude

I have enjoyed the complete aloneness with my own space.

I have come to enjoy being alone, experiencing the freedom that comes with it after a long time. 

The life of solitude began when I arrived in Germany. While I enjoyed doing things alone in Korea, this experience was different. I started living in a dormitory with a kitchen and a bathroom for myself. Prior to coming to Germany, I read various blogs and prepared myself as best as possible. However, it still felt insufficient, and my life started out completely alone. Despite this, I felt good.

There were many things I had to prepare for in the kitchen. I went to a store and thought long and hard about which cake to choose. Some sets didn't look right, and others didn't have the right size bowls. Eventually, I settled on four black bowls and also bought water, pasta noodles, sauce, and vegetables to put in the refrigerator. This made me feel satisfied.

The toilets in Germany were different from what I was used to in Korea. They required wiping everything down after flushing, and the toilet brush was placed on the floor. The showerhead was uncomfortable, and the water pressure was too hard on my body. I had to buy a specific shampoo for my hair. I also bought a bug string strap, as I noticed that there were many insects around. The bathroom required regular cleaning, which was annoying.

When I arrived at the dormitory, I realized that I needed to buy a blanket and a pillow. On the first night, I slept poorly, but eventually, I found a blanket and pillow that I could live with. There were many types of blankets, and I asked the staff for their help. Eventually, I chose one that was two layers thick, which worked well even in the summer.

I had thought that I had done many things alone in my life, but it turned out that many of my needs were met by my family. Now that I was completely alone, I felt a sense of confusion and disorientation. Every aspect of my life required adaptation, and even small changes were a source of stimulation. However, despite these challenges, I felt that life was enjoyable, and I didn't know how long this feeling would last.

For the first time in a long time, I enjoyed complete freedom. I slept when I wanted to, went out when I wanted to, and no one interfered with my life. There were no penalties or restrictions like in a dormitory, and over time, I began to create a life that was entirely my own. It was a liberating experience.

It is my book, my movie, and my music.

"I should have gone on an exchange program back then." I have heard this phrase over and over again, from my college senior in his late twenties to an adult approaching his fifties. Before leaving for Germany, I interned at a company, and my seniors advised me to go to abroad and do not come back in Korea. It was quiet serious. Perhaps they said that because they felt tired of living in Korea, especially with their work life.

I empathized with them. I thought that I would never have the opportunity to live abroad for such a long time, for about a year, in my life. I worked hard for three years to enter university and enjoyed my freedom as a college student, so I couldn't give up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If I got a office job, I had to give up living abroad for an extended period of time. That was why, even during the coronavirus pandemic, I was determined to apply for an exchange year. Two and a half years after dreaming of it, I started to prepare in earnest.

Hope was not given; it was created. I had a low GPA and little money, and unexpected problems arose. However, I never gave up, and eventually, I found a way to make it happen. I took online classes while serving in the military and miraculously improved my grades. I earned 20 million won by serving as a peace keeper in South Sudan, which was enough to cover my living expenses. Every time I faced administrative problems, I contacted the liaison officer to find a solution.

When I prepared for the exchange program myself, I realized that most of my activities were determined by my budget. My advice to those preparing for an exchange program is to make sure to secure enough funds. Whether it's scholarships or part-time jobs, you need to take enough time to prepare financially. Of course, even if you don't have enough money, I think there are ways. The mere act of being there will be a journey.

After traveling, you eventually learn more about yourself. When I was thrown into an unfamiliar environment, I started to show my true colors. During my one-year stay in Frankfurt, Germany, my taste, fears, and aspirations became clearer. I think this is essential in life. Understanding yourself is essential for the foundation of every decision. Therefore, I place a great value on the exchange program, which is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to achieve this.

I love books, movies, and music. I always make sure to record the things I love because I like to revisit them repeatedly. When I find inspiration in something, even after some time has passed, I feel a similar thrill when experiencing it again. Being an exchange student in Germany was same. My time there is a precious memory that I will cherish and recall throughout my life. It gives me strength and motivates me to explore new paths. This experience is the reason why my life in Europe can be compared to a book, a movie, and music.

First week

The beginning of this journey was an emotional experience mixed with joy, relief and sadness.

The first week of my journey was filled with mixed emotions of joy, relief, and sadness. As I looked around the airport, I wondered what kind of life I would experience. I took a Lufthansa flight and headed towards Germany, feeling like a completely different person.

Before moving to the dormitory, I stayed at a Korean hostel named Kaiser 72. As I waited for the door to open, I met the hostel manager for the first time. Little did I know that this encounter would mark the beginning of a crucial relationship heavy as my luggage.

Initially, I had no expectations for the guest house, as I just wanted to rest, meet new people, and gather information before the start of school. However, as time passed, I began to feel more comfortable there. After several days, I traveled to Marburg, walked through its cute alleys, and admired the breathtaking views.

At Kaiser 72, I met various guests who were going through their own journeys in Germany. Despite the differences in our lives, we all shared a sense of homogeneity as Koreans, and our conversations often revolved around facing unfamiliar worlds. We talked about life, love, and felt a range of emotions that we shared with each other.

As everyone was a tourist, the conversations continued until late at night. It was a great place to start my life in Germany, and I felt grateful for the stability that Kaiser 72 provided me with. However, as my time there soon came to an end, I felt a tinge of sadness as I headed towards the dormitory.

Standardization of Desire

I summarized the expenses required for an exchange student life for a year.

While preparing for my exchange year, I often feel that choice comes with a price. You have to sacrifice something to make a decision. I'm worried about my budget. I summarized the expenses required for an exchange student life for a year by using Google spreadsheet. 350 euros for living, 110.69 euros for insurance, 350 euros for dormitory room, 200 euros for travel. It costs approximately 1000 euros a month. Considering 12 months, I didn't have enough money to spend.

The credit card was not rational choice for saving money. I decided to buy a new iPhone. If you use a credit card, you will get a discount on the monthly fee for mobile data. The amount spent last month was purchased on the first week of following month. I lost self-control after starting to use credit card. It has blurred the view of assets. Because there was same budget even after I spend my money, it always seemed that I have a lot of money. Then, I realized two months before I left the country. I am short of money. I stopped using my credit card right away. I only used a debit card.

I needed to sacrifice something to save money. I carried a lunch box to reduce my living expenses. I could not hang out with my friends as much as I did in the past.  I had to make myself busier. Money squeezed me out of everything. But I had the willingness to do it. Because the exchange year was a invaluable opportunity for me.

To me, South Sudan was a foreign country where I could earn money. I served my military in South Sudan, Africa. It was an overseas dispatch. I received approximately 1500 euros a month as a wage. There was no need to spend money there. I saved money without any concern. Germany was different. It costs money even if you do nothing. How can I make the amount of money that I can earn maximum? That was my most crucial question to myself.  

It has been concluded that I have to maintain my online English tutoring job even during the German exchange period. In addition, I have to find a part-time job in Germany. In Germany, it is called Mini Job. If I had raised more funds before, I could have thought about it with more easy way. I was left with regrets.

I've never had the experience of saving a lot of money. It wasn't an easy thing to do. I was able to check how the money moves away from me. I haven't even departed for Germany, but I'm already learning the big lessons of life. I need to standardize my desires. Standardizing desires was linked to planning my budget.

Reasons for Choosing Germany

Most of my possibilities are decided by money. It sounds sad, but it's true.

The COVID-19 pandemic has occurred. The options are drastically reduced. I wanted to be an exchange student for as long as possible. I really want to be an exchange student with any cost. I had a look on the list of universities in USA. The situation was worse. I have read one in Europe. It was serious, but Germany was under better control among European countries. I just chose the list of application faster than I thought. First priority was Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany.

Germany is a good country to travel to. It costs cheaper because it is located in the center of Europe. It is surrounded by the North Sea and Denmark to the north, Poland and the Czech Republic to the east, Austria and Switzerland to the south, and France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands to the west. You can go to other countries by train. Such travels are difficult to be done from South Korea. My exchange year was the last opportunity for me to enjoy those travels. This is how I got interested in applying for the exchange program in Germany.

As for language, my destination during the exchange was clear. I wanted to be better than intermediate level. I hoped that this goal would be achieved in two languages, English and German. I remembered studying German when I was a high school student. I wanted to continue my experience that I studied German for 3 years. In the case of big cities, there is no problem communicating in English. I chose Germany because I needed to communicate anyway even though my German is not good enough at first.

I also had to think about the budget. The cost of living in Germany is cheaper compared to USA. Especially groceries are affordable. I wanted to be an exchange student for a long time within the range of my budget. If I am accepted to Goethe University, I could earn the scholarship that was half of my tuition. The tuition of my department at Yonsei university was expensive. To cut this in half was rare opportunity. It was a necessary choice considering after the exchange period.

Most of my possibilities were decided by money. It sounds sad but it’s true. I'd like to advise those who are currently preparing for an exchange student. It should be prepared in connection with the budget set in advance. Write down all the things you want to do. Think about the period of time to prepare. The sooner you do this thinking, the better. Money leads to action. It takes money to act.

The next important thing is language. You should to study the language of the country to be dispatched in advance. The language barrier can be a daunting burden. You can choose a country that uses a familiar language so that you can prepare in advance. It was Germany that met these important conditions evenly. After choosing a country, I did my best to prepare. That was all I could do. It was impossible to predict what life would be like.
