How book 4 ruined Jake character
Loss of Backbone and Constant Passive Fear (The Book 4 Low Point) In Book 4, Jake's defining traits shift from quiet resilience to passive cowardice. Scared of the Women in His Life: Instead of standing up as a strong partner and father, Jake becomes paralyzed by conflict. He is depicted as being too intimidated by the strong personalities of the women around him to take a firm stand. Failure to Protect Emily: When Emily is thrust into dangerous situations involving Neptune and the banished Sirens, Jake is completely ineffective. Rather than being the fiercely loyal dad in Book 2, he stands idly by, not being able to help and is too anxious to protect or help Emily.
Regression into Strict "Mermaid School" Conformity: Book 4, Jake completely regresses on these values by doubling down on forcing Emily to attend traditional mermaid school.Instead of validating Emily’s unique position as a semi-mer, he pushes her into the rigid undersea social system, completely forgetting how that very system locked him in a coral prison for twelve years. Lack of Equal Compromise with Mary: His biggest character struggle in the later books is reduced to small domestic complaints, like being upset that Emily wants to go to a school he doesn't like, making him appear remarkably selfish compared to his wife's massive sacrifices.
How to fix it my plan:
1. Make Him a Leader in the Siren Peace NegotiationsInstead of having Jake fear the Sirens, he should have empathy for them. The Connection: Jake spent 12 years imprisoned for breaking merfolk laws regarding humans. The Sirens were banished for their own conflicts with humans and Neptune.
2. Turn the "Mermaid School" Conflict Into a Lesson on ReformJake’s push for Emily to attend traditional mermaid school felt out of character. The Fix: Instead of just letting Emily go shiprock without a plan Jake’s motivation should have been about reforming the system from within. The Narrative Shift: He could have told Emily: "I want you to go to school so you can show them that semi-mers are equal, and how you being part human make you a bridge" Jake can be hopeful thinking he doing the right thing without considering how bad the human hate coming in shiprock. 3. Show Him Making Sacrifices for the Human World To balance his relationship with Mary, Book 4 could have shown Jake trying harder to adapt to human culture. The Fix: The book could have included a subplot where he tries to stop towns being destroyed by Brightport construction maybe Jake can try to spend more time in human form on land, navigating human towns to understand Mary and Emily's background. This would show genuine growth and an equal partnership with his wife, rather than him stubbornly staying in his underwater comfort zone. He can use a wheelchair get by
