 It’s always been easy for Kal to feel alienated from his family. He was adopted, the trauma from his parents’ death making him skittish, sensitive, and prone to lashing out. He spent two years in the foster system, being moved from house to house ever few months until he was adopted by a well off family with two children of their own. He was shy, quietly stewing in his anger from the time he was small. They asked him once, when he was seven, if he wanted to change his surname to match theirs, he declined.

The only place he really felt seen was in the ballet classes his parents put him in at a young age. They wanted it to lead into tap and then singing lessons, and then acting lessons to go along with his guitar lessons, the way of all Hollis children, but Kal refused, instead begging to be enrolled in more classes so that he could simply catch the bus to the academy immediately after school rather than pack into the family car with his siblings. And so it was that Kal spent most of his time from the age of seven to thirteen going from home to school, school to the academy, lugging his guitar on his back and clutching it tightly against his thigh as he took the bus back home, only to repeat the cycle again in the morning. His dedication got him noticed, and after a spring recital he was offered a spot at the Joffrey Conservatory program in the fall after his fourteenth birthday.

He left San Diego with little preamble. He had little holding him there and New York was a land of possibility. Kal lived in the dorms, went to school with his fellow dancers and wrote half-hearted postcards and quick phone calls back home.

The years would go by without much of a hassle. Kal fell in love with the city, found a place he felt like he belonged and and was invited to audition with NYCB the spring before his 18th birthday.

He worked incredibly hard but coasted until he met his current partner, an accidental partner switch-up leading to him finding another dancer who understood him just as well as he understood himself. He was promoted not long after their first stint as opposite leads together and got a nice salary raise to boot. He still has to share his apartment with his two roommates, Nate and Delilah, but the building actually has a doorman now, which Kal sees as an absolute win. Lately, due to the beginning of the season, Kal has been chosen as the face of City Ballet and spends more time than he would like to admit coming and going from photophoots and interviews at Final Score, Scarlet, and Title Eight.

Nate was nervous, and he loathed that he was so painfully easy to read. He should have called in sick, found other excuses not to show up at work, at least until after the premiere. At least until things would calm down everything would be a little more manageable. Yet, here he was now, stuck with Kal in one room, unable to look his best friend in the eye.

“I’m not being weird. That’s how I always am! C’mon, Kal, you know me.” Nate insisted with a smile, even if it was strained. How could he lie to the one person who believed in him, who led him to his dream? No, even worse- how could he go right ahead and betray that person just like that? He knew how Kal felt about Rylan. He had seen their relationship blossom over the many years, and yet, he didn’t even doubt before breaking every single rule and kissing Rylan. Everything else, overall, was simply unforgivable. “I’m just nervous.” He lied, shrugging it off, and instead stretching a bit. It was enough of an excuse to make a bit more distance between the two, as if that would somehow help with not revealing the truth. “I mean, the performance is in just days, you know? It’s just a lot to take in, and I really don’t know how you manage to deal with it so smoothly.”

"I know you well enough to know when you're acting weird, which you are." He pointed out with a quirk of his eyebrow. "You look like you've seen a ghost." He laughed nervously. The other dancer was putting him on edge, which, all things considered, was a feat in and of itself. He laughed, breaking the tension as he nodded to himself and clasped his hands together. He was just being paranoid. It made sense that Nate would be a bit of a mess coming up on one of his first real productions. Smaller shows were nothing compared to the proper ballet productions that were to come.

"Practice." He answered truthfully. It was nearing his tenth season with the company and his fifth in a lead role so he rarely felt more than the usual butterflies as he waited for his cue during ballets now but he had been a wreck the first time he had gotten on stage properly. "You really do get used to it, if anything I wish I could feel the way I did when I was your age." He grinned, hoping that he could impart some wisdom to his friend and guide him along. "In fact, 25 was when I danced Romeo for the first time. I threw up before every performance. They had to keep a glass of water, a toothbrush, some toothpaste and a bucket backstage specifically for me." He laughed at the memory.

"Just don't get too in your head, yeah? You won't be able to dance the way you should if you're caught up in your own thoughts." He leaned over to clasp Nate on the shoulder, squeezing it with a smile before moving toward the center of the room, his attention on checking his costume in the mirrors that lined the walls around them. "If anything you should just be happy you don't have to wear this thing," He said, tugging at the cropped, intricately decorated waistcoat, "It's a hassle, but apparently it really gets Rylan going so silver linings." He worked, tugging at the fabric one last time before turning back toward his friend.

"I have a feeling that her parents will be forcing her onto the premier carpet before curtain opening night, unfortunately," he shrugged. He loved when Rylan took the time to sit on his vanity and do her best to distract him before shows, usually, but he understood that she had obligations to uphold, especially when at her parents request, "so we'll be left to give each other pep talks before we go on." He laughed.

Ever since that night spent with Rylan, Nate was battling a wide range of emotions. He was thrilled, getting to act on the feelings that had been slowly boiling deep within him, yet the guilt, knowing that he was quickly developing feelings for someone his closest friend loved, was just as easily weighting on his shoulders. It kept him up at night, and more often than not, he simply felt awful about it. Was there any kind of way out of this without anyone getting hurt? It was a silly thought, because while that might have been the case in movies, that wasn’t it in real life.

He had to tell Kal, because if he didn’t, he knew he was going to explode. Or, even worse, Kal was going to find out from someone else, and that was a sure way to end their friendship. If this wasn’t the ending point in the first place.

It was almost easy to avoid Kal during the rehearsals, with the premiere night approaching so quickly, and even if things were awkward, Nate managed. However, the one thing he hadn’t planned for was one-to-one rehearsals that the duo were bound to do, with Nate being Kal’s understudy and all. So when they were told to go to a separate room to rehearse the main number, Nate knew that he could protest for so long before it became too suspicious. Resigning to the fact that this was the first time they’d be alone since he slept with Rylan, Nate knew that the inevitable was bound to happen. “Hey man.” He nodded at the other as they made their way towards a separate room. Looking back at the group of dancers, he regretted not being there, not being just one of the many. “Do you want to just start first? Cause if you do, I can just make sure I’ve got everything down completely, and there’s no unecessary moves that would just upset someone. And that’s probably the last thing we want, right? Not that I would need to show up on the stage in the first place, cause you’ll be great.” He was rambling nervously, well aware that he was probably not making any sense. He was awful at keeping secrets, he knew that much, and it was showing.

If the dancer didn’t know better he would have said that Nate had been avoiding him for most of rehearsal, but the thought flew from his head as soon as it entered. There was no need for it, after all. Nate could have been stressing about the schedule for their final week of rehearsal, or rent, or any number of things that would get him a little more in his head than he usually was and none of them would have anything to do with Kal in particular, but he couldn't help but shake the feeling that it was more than that. More personal, anyway, and that made him nervous. He couldn’t really deal with another blow right now, not with representatives from The Royal ballet blowing up his phone waiting for an answer, the show only a week away, and, of course, everything with Rylan. 

They, at least, seemed to be slowly but surely turning onto the same page for the first time in months. One phone call or dinner at a time. 

He perked up at the sound of his name, the smile that had instantly found its way to his face at a chance to rehearse with his best friend faltering at the look on Nate’s face. He set his jaw, his eyebrows furrowing at the back of the other man’s head as they made their way to the separate room. 

His hands found the ends of the towel slung around his neck and he gripped at his tensely, his thumb rubbing soothingly over the fabric as his friend rambled. “You’re being weird,” He said, eyeing him up and down, “what’s wrong with you?”

Rylan had taken a little longer than she’d intended to get to Kal’s apartment admittedly because she’d taken so long to work out what she was going to wear, apparently she was more nervous about this than she’d first thought. Even as the girl was knocking on her ex boyfriend’s door her heart began to speed up in her chest, hammering as the blood pumped loudly in her ears. She hadn’t seen him since she’d run out on his proposal at New Year which made her feel … well a little sheepish right now. It wasn’t the nicest thing she’d done to Kal after all.

“Hey…you look, you look all rumpled. You ever heard of an iron babe?” She ended up commenting as she reached out to tweak the collar of his shirt tentatively, a small smile on her lips. Had this been them normally she’d have immediately stepped in to give him a kiss but things were far from normal between the two so instead she just stood there until she was invited inside. A small laugh escaped her at the overdramatic huff of the flowers she’d brought, a small lift in her chest when she saw him smile slightly, at least he wasn’t filled entirely with rage at her. Sure he’d said he wasn’t when they were texting but … well he’d have been forgiven for being furious. Even if that had just come into being between her agreeing to come over and her arriving. Rylan felt like she deserved whatever he wanted to throw at her.

“Yeah, no we don’t want them to like…die or whatever.” Well now she was getting awkward as she stepped inside chewing her bottom lip, not sure if she should sit or remain standing. Maybe she should offer to help with something for dinner? Then again both of them knew Rylan was a terrible cook so she’d probably burn the apartment down if she even tried it. “You have done an alcohol and sofa purge? Yeah same.” She replied seriously, holding the expression for a couple of seconds before breaking out into a laugh she could no longer repress. “Can you imagine? No, I’m like ninety percent alcohol already this year but I’ll take a kombucha, that’s at least fermented which it has in common with some alcohols.”

God just seeing his face was making waved of guilt crash across her shoulders every time their eyes locked, the memory of what he’d put together to propose to her flashing up in her minds eye, not to mention that ring that no doubt was in the apartment somewhere. That had actually been one of the things that prompted her panic. It was composed of something that was so intrinsically important to him that she felt imposter syndrome at just the idea of having it on her finger. She already felt like she wasn’t good enough half the time, that would just been a physical representation of how she wasn’t a good enough girlfriend for him, let alone fiancé. “Did you have anything in mind that you wanted to watch? What about Sleeping Beauty, we can call it character study for you?” Plus she really liked the Disney cartoon and he fully knew that.

The term of endearment had his stomach flipping, his awkwardness nearly melting away for a moment as he laughed at himself, his head ducking shyly as she tugged on his collar. “I was stretching before you texted.” he explained, his eyes finding hers as he shot her a small smile. It felt almost normal, like she would step into his space and give him a kiss before dragging him to the couch so that he could walk her through his day, but the stilted energy between them returned as quickly as it had faded and he was left simply looking down at her, hoping that he didn’t look too heartbroken. 

He didn’t want her to feel any worse than she already did. He knew she had a tendency to spiral and that was the last thing he wanted. The thought of causing her more pain clenched tightly at his chest and he cleared his throat as he stopped aside, allowing her to enter his small apartment. 

He looked down at the bouquet, twirling it in his hands as he took a deep breath. This didn’t need to be bad, necessarily. They could have dinner and maybe talk a little and ignore the elephant in the room and the ring that was now stashed away in the farthest recesses of his closet. He had thought about wearing it again, he still had the chain laying on his dresser, but even looking at it nearly brought him to tears. Tears of hurt, yes, but mostly tears of frustration at himself for destroying the last thing he had of his parents for nothing. It had been different, when he thought she would say yes, like his parents would be there with him while he started his own family, hopefully proud of him and the choices he had made from wherever they were but that was a fleeting hope that only brought a lump to his throat to think about now. 

“Right.” He said, nodding before turning to make his way to his small kitchen, the flowers discarded, though not ungently, onto the counter while he tried to calm his racing thoughts. 

He needed a good shower so that he could cry without feeling like he had to acknowledge it, he needed a vase, he needed a hug. 

He laughed drily, the look he shot her more pleading than anything else. She worried him, had been worrying him since Halloween, hell, since before that. “You need to take care of yourself.” He muttered, his jaw tightening once the words had slipped from his mouth and lingered between them. It wasn’t really his place to tell her that anymore, or maybe it was, it was all so confusing that a part of him just wanted to give up. A bigger part of him desperately wanted to fix it. 

He hummed rather than acknowledge the truth of her statement and busied himself with carefully pulling her preferred flavor from his fridge and handing it to her with a smile he hoped would put her at ease. 

“Character study,” he repeated, his eyebrow rising as he fought off a laugh, “Sure. Sleeping Beauty it is. I just have to plate our dinner and then we can start, yeah?”

This was certainly a turn up for the books. When Rylan had reached out to Kal to see if he was doing okay the last thing she’d expected was to end up getting dressed in proper clothes to go over to his for dinner. Mainly because she’d assumed the man hated her guts but yet again, just like many times before, she hadn’t given him enough credit. She’d just thought that considering how badly she’d taken the cheating incident for literally weeks, he would be the same in the wake of her saying no to his proposal. Well her running away from it, she hadn’t actually said anything at all.

Clawing through the clothes in her wardrobe she pulled out and replaced several different combinations with increasing panic, not really sure what someone was meant to wear to see their on again off again boyfriend for the first time since bolting from a carefully planned marriage proposal. It wasn’t a situation she’d ever found herself in before funnily enough. Finally settling on jeans with a nice top along with a pair of heeled back boots she gripped the sink in her bathroom while staring herself down in the mirror, willing herself to calm the hell down. Kal wouldn’t invite her over to his house just to yell at her right? I mean, he’d be within his right to do so but god Rylan hoped that wasn’t the case.

With images of her most recent encounter with Nate playing on a relentless loop in her mind she made quick work of heading across town because if she agreed to let the family driver take her the news would likely get back to her parents she’d been to Kal’s. Never a bad thing because they’d draw their own conclusions which would stop them asking any kind of questions for a while if he wasn’t seen around the family house anytime soon. After all there was no telling how tonight would go down. Not that she was expecting them to get back together, she wasn’t a complete idiot. Plus Rylan wasn’t even entirely sure that’s what she wanted to happen right now, she wasn’t sure what she wanted half the time.

Arriving at the man’s apartment door she took a couple of deep breaths, in through her nose, out through her mouth, before knocking with as much assertiveness as she could muster up. Her toe tapped rapidly against the floor as she waited for the door to open, breaking out into a genuine if a little bit tentative of a smile when it finally did. “Hey, I brought uh…here.” She thrust the flowers she’d bought out towards him with a slight blush rising in her cheeks. “I told you I’d bring you flowers on your opening night and also tonight so…” She’d asked the driver to stop on their way over so she could dart into one of the nicest florists in the city to get a bouquet, hoping the mix of blue and white hues would be something he liked. @hyxnjxn​

He had been too absorbed in steaming his vegetables and mixing his sauces to really pay attention to the time, which was probably a good thing, seeing as though the last thing he really wanted to do was obsess over how long it took Rylan to make her way to his apartment. He knew, of course, how much time it took but thinking of it would only stress him out more and more with every minute that passed and he doubted she wanted to show up only to have him be a complete wreck, even if that was, sadly, exactly how he had felt since New Years Eve. 

It was a bit like being a ghost, at least, that’s what it felt like to him. He had forced himself out of bed and to the theater for rehearsals, forced himself not to blow off his sparring sessions at the gym, forced himself to go to an art gallery that was showing a collection he knew Rylan would love, but all of it felt hollow and pointless,  like he was simply existing instead of living. 

A large part of him feared that she was only coming over to explain why she had left, that she wasn’t ready, didn’t want to marry him, didn’t love him quite enough. The thought made him nearly sick. 

But the salmon was nearly finished cooking and his greens were nearly done and there was a familiar knock at his door that sent his heartbeat into overdrive.

He rushed to the door, frowning down at his wrinkled white t-shirt and worn gray sweats before swinging the door open. There was really nothing he could do about that now, besides, he would have never changed to impress her before, unless, of course, she decided that the shirt he had worn needed to be hers. 

It seemed unlikely that would be an issue now. 

“Hi.” He said, his smile small and unsure as he took the flowers. His lips twitched into a fondly amused grin as he brought them to his nose and took a deep, overdramatic breath, his eyes closing as he fought off a smirk. 

“Thanks.” He murmured once he opened his eyes. “You can make yourself comfortable,” he said, stepping aside to let her into his apartment, the faint sound of his roommate’s music breaking the odd tension between them, “I’m going to, uh, put these in water. And dinner is almost ready, I just have a few more things to do so, you know, you can just sit and choose a movie or,” he trailed off with a huffed laugh. This was ridiculous. He felt so awkward. “Just- whatever, I guess. Can I get you something to drink? I have uh, tea, and, well, kombucha. We’ve did an alcohol and soda purge about a week ago. Roommate solidarity.” He shrugged, his cheeks coloring with the heat he could feel rushing up his neck.

Kal: Well... you could come over and have salmon instead. I think I’ve got the stuff for scalloped potatoes for you. 

Kal: Rylan... you always come to opening night.

Kal: Salmon and greens. The season has already started.
