This scene just broke my heart. I mean look at Merlin’s face, his face is a magic reveal itself, you can see his pain and constraint, not being able to tell the man he looks up the most his true opinion when the future of the realm is at stake, but also the almost certainty of Arthur dying because of Mordred and the fear of being discovered and rejected by his best friend, his everyday and future destiny, feel weary on his shoulders. And he finally makes a decision against all he really wants, with his heart in his throat, just for the sake of his king and the kingdom. At the same time, Arthur’s face shows real interest in whatever Merlin has to say about this particular issue but also trusts him on a deeper level. You see curiosity and fascination in his eyes, for the simple-looking guy who shows so much wisdom sometimes, who is loyal and brave. In this very moment you see Arthur’s eyes flicker for an instant and ponder heavily about what is it that makes Merlin so sad, what makes him be this emotionally compromised. Part of him just accepts he’ll never know everything about Merlin, and that is one of the things he enjoys the most, but the other part feels like they’ve known each other since forever and their bond is unbreakable. And he asks himself: Is it the perspective of the death of a loved one? Mordred? No, Arthur, it’s you, you clotpole. It’s his willingness to serve you and to build a better world with you. It’s his pain for not being able to tell you what he really is, what he really feels, what is really happening. But you cannot know, not yet. OMFG WHAT HAVE I DONE.
