Misconceptions about Radfems
"Radical feminism is just misandry." Radical feminism is first and foremost about *women*, not men. Men just happen to be the number one threat to women, and we must discuss that given that we are fighting for our rights. Much of the community is about female positivity and not just the negative side of things. Also, misandry is not real.
"TERFs believe infertile women/women who've had hysterectomies/women who've had mastectomies aren't women." No. Lots of people like to say that TERFs reduce women to their biology and ability to reproduce, but that claim came out of nowhere. Ask any self-identified TERF and they will tell you they only have one singular condition for being a woman: being female. "TERFs are right wing." Absolutely not! They may disagree with most progressives on one singular issue, but that does not make them conservative or right wing. All radfems are progressive, given that fighting for women's rights is an inherently progressive thing. All radfems I've met are economically left-leaning as well. "Donald Trump/Ben Shapiro/any transphobic person is a TERF." The 'RF' in TERF stands for 'radical feminist'. First off, most radfems do not believe men can be radical feminists in the first place. Even if they could, these men are misogynists and thus ideologically opposed to radfems. Conservative men are opposed to transgender ideology because they find it scandalous, against their religion, contrary to the traditional nuclear family that they idolise, etc. TERFs on the other hand oppose it because (in its mainstream iteration at least) it erases sex-based oppression and villainises women for things like having sexual preferences. "TERFs are against gender non-conformity/want to uphold gender roles." This is the total opposite of the truth. Radical feminists believe in gender abolition, with gender non-conformity being part of that ultimate goal. Radical feminists are also against conforming to beauty standards, shaving, wearing makeup, etc., all examples of gender-conformity for women. Part of the reason many radical feminists disagree with gender ideology is because we believe that you do not need to change yourself if your outward expression does not "match" your sex according to society. Many radical feminists are themselves GNC. "Radical feminism is white feminism." Another demonstrably false but commonly repeated sentiment. Radical feminists hail from all backgrounds and countries. Let's not ignore how many of the women crucified for being TERFs or "misandrists" have been Black women. Most radical feminists also highly value intersectionality in their activism.
"All radfems are transphobic." Radical feminists are not a monolith and have different views on different issues, including different levels of tolerance and acceptance for the transgender community. Let's also not forget how the average TERF is a lot less detrimental to the well-being of trans people than the average transphobic man, who is often violent.

Only thing I'd change is in the 4th point. Change "villainizes women for things like having sexual preferences" to "things like having a certain sexuality" because sexualities are not a preference!

Uh oh here I go again making another post! I'm wondering what women in the radfem community think of this new (not new but modern I guess) push towards modesty for women? I watch a lot of commentary videos on youtube and came across a video by a lady I follow about some rodeo in Houston where there were lots of women dressed in crop tops and short shorts. She brought up this one story about a college student (a girl of course) who went to talk to her professor about schoolwork and her professor (a male of course) "couldn't focus because she had on a white tank top and had nipple piercings". There were some clips of women talking about how they don't want their male partners seeing other women "exposed" like that. The main thing being said in the video was these women are "disgusting" for "having their asses out" and "leaving nothing to the imagination". The comments were filled with people, both men and women, echoing this same sentiment about how women should dress modestly and are "disgusting" if they don't.
I personally find this rhetoric repulsive. There is something to say about how women are pushed to sexualize themselves for the male gaze but the main point of this video seemed to be that women should dress modestly to "earn" respect from men. Which is the same old shit we've always heard, that women should follow the status quo whatever it may be at the time in order to appease men or to be respected as a human being.
This was a family friendly event and that was said many times but all of the pictures/clips shown of the women they were complaining about showed women (black women specifically, this is a black youtuber) in crop top and daisy dukes which I don't see a problem with. It was emphasized that they "had their whole asses hanging out" but they were literally just wearing cutoff shorts. You could see the bottom of their cheeks but that was it. There was one woman showed who even had on a two piece set of a form fitting cropped top and leggings. I don't think it's outrageous to wear something like that in the Houston heat. They looked confident, happy, and comfortable. Most of them wearing cowgirl boots with their outfits, nothing too crazy.
I just find it weird to see so many people openly outraged about what women choose to wear on their own bodies and using strong language to tell women what they should be doing once again. It's back in style I guess to shit on women and chastise them for not being modest enough for men's tastes. Idk it just irked me and I wanted to vent about it. I'd like to hear others' thoughts!

As a black girl, it’s just impossible for me to ignore the similarities between black face and drag as phenomenons that were/are incredibly normalized in popular culture. Both are offensive exaggerations of an oppressed class to the point of caricaturization by the oppressor class for entertainment and perpetuate harmful stereotypes. The defence line drag apologists always use is that drag is an exploration of gender expression especially for gender non conforming males who were never able to express their femininity and that’s why it’s different from black face in that sense which is just blatant racism. What they don’t know is that white performers often used the excuse of exploring their “inner negro” when in blackface and it was actually a very popular response to blackface criticism lol. And even then..why should women be mocked and made sexual objects in order for men to be able to “express themselves” it’s really just grade A sexism so many drag performers have expressed not thinking that women should participate. There is no other explanation for why drag queens are overwhelmingly much more popular than drag kings and that’s the fact that embodiments of men aren’t seen as jokes. Recently read this really fascinating paper that talks about how similar the two are I strongly recommend it
Even from an aesthetics standpoint, the comparison of blackface and drag makeup maps almost 1 to 1. The features are exaggerated to the point of hideous caricature in both cases, which can only exist when you intend to mock those features. As someone else said, it’s a minstrel show. Add in the historical context that women were banned from stage, and arguably still are barred from preforming in drag shows, just now via social consequence... It’s strikingly similar to how black actors (and those of other races as well) were historically barred from preforming and today are still under-selected for roles... Once you see the connection between drag and blackface, it is impossible to un-see.

It's sooo funny to me when celebrities (especially singers) cultivate an image of "provocateurs", really pushing the limits of polite society by... dressing up as like, the devil, or making fun of christianity in some other way. Like by all means do that, but we all know it's not controversial at all. It's been done to death since at least the 70's. We've sort of culturally all canonized that satirizing christianity is "sticking it to the man". It's completely safe to make fun of christianity, there's absolutely zero risk, sexualizing a nun in your music video is not really challenging anything... Dressing up as Muhammad would be controversial. THAT would be daring. But it's unsafe to do so, both from the "in-group" finding it offensive and racist (although it absolutely doesn't have to be), AND the risk of retaliation a la Charlie Hebdo

Letter from a radical feminist to trans people
Feminists have tried to sound the alarm about trans overreach and how it harms women, and we've been attacked and ignored by the left as a result. However, the issue leaked into the broader society and normies - who are only vaguely aware of these issues - have turned to conservatives to lead the push back. However, conservatives are not opposed to gender ideology, they just have their own version and want to impose it on everyone.
Feminists stand against gender ideology of both stripes.
Protecting women's rights is important, and sex-based segregation in places like prisons, washrooms and change rooms is vital for women's protection.
Protecting women and girls participating in female only sports is necessary and fair.
Banning trans people from the military is unacceptable discrimination. Some military units are sex-segregated (sometimes just in the barracks and in training at other times), but your gender identity doesn't affect your ability to serve your country. Your sex-segregated unit can handle a little more diversity in the ranks.
Forcing people to wear uniforms based on their sex is sex-based discrimination. If there are optional uniforms available, they should be available to everyone.
If someone wants to legally change their name, that's their right.
If an adult wants to medically alter their bodies and can find a doctor to do so, that's their right.
If someone wants to add a notation that they are trans to their ID, that's their right - because your ID is meant to help people identify you accurately.
If someone wants to ask people to use specific pronouns, that's their right too. If other people decline to do so, that's also their right.
Government agencies don't need to enforce gender ideology - not the trans version or the conservative version. Government needs to protect the rights of women and of minorities and let society function in all its chaotic diversity.
The secret to a civil society isn't about getting everyone to agree with each other, it's about learning how to get along when you disagree.
Gender identity is no different than any other religion - it doesn't matter if we personally agree with it, we should still defend it against government overreach.

Do trans activists made people conservative? Well, my point is that left and right ideologues try to persuade the general public about who to support, and some ideas get traction more than others. When the left handed so much power to trans activists to make extensive legal changes in a very top down way, and bent major government institutions to trans activists demands, the general public didn't like seeing men in women's prisons, men in girl's sports, men in women's washrooms and changerooms and so on. And trans activists quickly got control of media platforms to that no dissent was tolerated, no discussion allowed - but the general public is not behind these moves. You can cancel and harass and call us terfs and send the police after feminists all you want but you're not winning anyone's hearts and minds by being suck a bunch of dicks. Regular, everyday people have their doubts and concerns and the left didn't listen to anyone except trans activists. Like pronouns. You can say what you want but you can't force everyone else to also say what you want - that gives you all the free speech and leaves none for everyone else. It's reasonable to compromise even if it's uncomfortable.
Interesting idea that men created sex segregated spaces in order to dominate women but really all public space was for men and women's spaces were incredibly curtailed. Feminists in the West spent a lot of time carving sex-segregated spaces out of male 'public space', just so that women could function outside their homes with reasonable safety. All sports were men's sports until women were allowed to compete in sports. All washrooms were men's washrooms because women should stay home. This situation still exists in many countries by the way. Personally, I very much like having a gender neutral or 'family' option added, but for security's sake I don't want women's spaces removed. We need those rules because men prey on women and girls. Until that changes, women's security is important.

So many arguments... on the big picture I'm trying to tell you that you are conflating human rights with things you want. In a society, people aren't going to believe in the same things. I don't believe in a soul, much less a gender soul, and yet I co-exist in a society with people who definitely thing my soul is in peril for being gay, and people who think I'm a fascist (and apparently anti-semite) for not believing in their gender ideas. How do you live together? For starters, you've only responded to parts of my post that you disagree with. Try a little more to acknowledge partial agreement. Even if someone agrees with you 50%, or even 20%, that gives you some allies, something to work with, ways to make peace. In the areas where you disagree, you can argue your rights are more fundamental and therefore supercede the rights of others, but you aren't going to get everything you want at the expense of everyone else.

access to HRT <-- 80% agree, I disagree when this refers to minors and I don't agree that the public should pay for it. I'm open to private health care plans and individuals doing whatever they want.
access to recognition <--- what does that even mean? How is 'recognition' a human right? Give me other examples of how 'recognition' is needed for other groups?
access to spaces where we always belong <-- again, what does that even mean?
For the sake of brevity, let's pick one of several points to discuss
"What is forcing? someone saying "please call me by her pronouns I don't feel comfortable with him pronouns" damn this is forcing for you?" <-- no, that's a request. I don't mind that. But I probably won't, so then what?
What happens if I refuse? I know people who've been fired or disciplined at their work for this, even for doing it in private conversations. I know people who've been investigated by the police for 'hate speech' for this. This is also grounds for being perma-banned from multiple social media platforms, which is maybe why you think 'no one has a problem with it. On a broader scale, this has been turned into official policy where non-compliance is punished in the workplace. This is true in media outlets, data collection processes, and more. For example if I'm a researcher collecting data about crimes, every crime committed by a man who identifies as a woman is counted a a female crime, and protesting this could cost me my career. A teacher who refuses to use someone's gender-based pronouns can be disciplined. That's what I mean by using institutional power to force compliance with this ideology and that, by the way, is why I make comparisons to authoritarianism - because it's overreach. Do you support this? What do YOU think should happen to someone who doesn't use the pronouns you want?
I'm comparing you to extremists because I don't see any recognition that other people also have rights that might mean you don't get what you want. Am I wrong? Is there anything you don't support about trans activists so far, anything you think is overreach? Legal access to the spaces they belong, without any legal changes

Trans healthcare being with trans people on charge and a true professional teaching on how to do it (because actual doctors don't)

Disclosing you're trans to someone isn't rape by deception

And I think the list would go long you would still disagree and consider myself an extremist but I don't care, I am one, I'm not trying to hide this, I'm all in to trans liberation, we shouldn't bend our heads to conservatives or TERFs, we should protest and make the change
"Cis" people don't "have the puberty they want". I didnt want to bleed and be in pain for a week every month. I didn't want acne or mood swings that make me feel suicidal every month. Puberty isn't something you choose, it's a natural process that happens as the body matures.
Not disclosing you're trans before sex is rape by deception. If a man was feminine enough to pass as a woman and had sex with a lesbian would that not be deception? And therefore rape by definition of the word? Why do y'all want to sleep with people who you know wouldn't otherwise sleep with you if they knew you're not what you said you are? You're seriously defending lying to people.
Trans people should be protected from discrimination under the law and that's it. People shouldn't be forced to go along with your delusions just because you have a mental illness that makes you uncomfortable with the sex you were born as. Trans women are men with a mental illness and should be labeled and treated as such.

Crazy how the friend is "experiencing their FIRST bout of sexism" as an adult and thinking that confirms their womanhood. Their womanhood would be confirmed if they were actually born a woman. I've been experiencing sexism since I could comprehend the world around me as a small child. Imagine celebrating sexism and joking about how beneficial it is for you. Men have been benefiting from sexism and celebrating it since the dawn of civilization, nothing new. And openly saying that experiencing sexism is an entry to womanhood is very telling.
Take off the wig and makeup and then see how much "sexism" he experiences. The rest of us not wearing a costume don't get to take it off. You can't identify into oppression.

This post was really thought-provoking to me because the more I analyzed it, the less it computed. That was really exciting to me because it made me realize how much radical feminism rewires your brain when you're confronted with this kind of superficial drivel.
The fact that it seemed totally nonsensical conveys several very important things about where I'm at mentally:
1. That "femininity" is almost a non-concept to me at this point. It is just a label for a performance that I don't even participate in anymore and which has no connection to my womanhood. To suggest that I ought to strive for it, when it's just a specific style of self-expression, would seem just as arbitrary as suggesting that I should attempt to resemble and behave like a stuffy 17th century magistrate with a powdered wig if I want to be a real woman. What exactly is it about any performance, clothing or accessories that is intrinsically tied in with my femaleness, and why should I strive for it? Once you're outside of it, you see how there was never a connection between the two.
2. That even if this person were female, I could never feel that I were "threatened" somehow by how they look compared with me, because I don't place any value on beauty anymore and it has nothing to do with my value or theirs. What would I be competing for? The approval of males (or females) who are so shallow that they judge my worth on my appearance? At this point I couldn't conceive of caring about the opinion of such persons.
3. That feeling superior for wearing the heaviest and most meticulously applied mask is the same as saying "I have the lowest self-esteem here and am thus superior to all the women I work with who are comfortable enough with themselves to wear less/go without." When I was younger I used to feel embarrassed if my makeup was too light, but now that I see makeup as a crutch and a mask, it wouldn't occur to me that I ought to feel inferior next to someone who utilizes it - because it would be far better if they didn't in the first place. It would be like an alcoholic making fun of me for not having the "skill" of pounding a 12-pack of beer like they can, when I've long since given up drinking. I wouldn't be impressed.
Radical feminism puts you in a different mental sphere where you simply don't analyze things the way you used to, and where the things people value don't seem to make sense. Before, when I accepted concepts about what was expected of me as a woman, I didn't question anything. Now, I find myself asking, "But why would I want to do that? Why should I care about any of this? Who am I meant to be impressing by doing xyz, and why should I care what they think? What exactly is wrong with me that I should have to torture and hide myself to fix it?"
Rather than automatically obeying each expectation, I'm automatically 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 each expectation. This is what radical feminism does, and once you begin, you're never able to go back.
