Champagne taste in a quarter water world
I’m living the NY dream. I’ve already made it here, but I’m living it again. I believe people get confused between living the NY dream with living the NY fantasy. The fantasy is for the people that want to live in NY like they see in the movies, Sex in the City, in huge loft apts, etc. But that is usually not the case. The dream is the smells, sounds, and state of mind NY creates on it’s own. It’s the peeling paint on the doors and hinges, possibly containing led. It’s the old creaking hardwoods floors that scream back to you your loneliness, or sense of excitement. It’s the merengue music playing outside your window at 2am on a Saturday. It’s the click clack and hiss of the steam pipes as they work their way to ready. The NY dream is the struggle of wanting to be a true artist, to do nothing else but be that which you came to succeed in. It means splitting meals in half, in order to have money for the ever-rising subway fare. Or exchanging clothes to have new threads for a date with a girl you met at a show. The real NY dream is a dream, because dreams come true. A NY fantasy is something that wasn’t meant to be obtained, more of an after thought, usually for those who weren’t meant to make it anyway. Champagne taste in a quarter water world.
Here we go again...
Being lost is the opportunity to find yourself again. It’s happening now...it’s in the ether; it’s in the consciousness of the people. I want to bring back a level of sophistication. I’m not snap back and tattoos. I’m not a child; I’m a grown ass man. I want to be a model for all the lost children; I could give a shit less about being a trend. They always say be who you want to be, and for me that’s always going to change. So you can either change the channel or stay tuned, because it’s never going to be the same.
I believe I can live somewhat of a normal lifestyle being an artist. I believe I can hold a healthy and happy relationship, and still be an animal onstage. All these personalities are truly me; the stage just gives them a platform to be released. But I choose not to be all of them all of the time. I feel that artists think they must be their alter egos all the time, and they soon begin to have a false sense of themselves, and a false sense of reality. I never want to allow my ego to be who I am. It’s there and it won’t go away, so I will give it a spoonful here and there. But my heart has always been with the people. They are the reality. But we have a choice between selfish desires and duty to something that is greater than ourselves. And we can never forget that. I’ve wondered why the people are lost and falling into trend. But it is the artists themselves that are lost and falling into trend, just to be liked by more lost fans. I don’t think there is any truth to that. And at the end of the day, you can’t run from the truth. I will be of substance for myself and the greater good. It’s not always about you.
