The Post: When you guys first started noodling around in SoCal in the mid-80s, did you ever think it would unwind like this? Did you have great expectations or more modest goals?

Greg K: We were primarily a punk band, and punk music wasn’t on the radio or on major labels. Our biggest aspiration was to play shows. Dexter said he wanted to have an album in five years. I thought he was crazy.

The Post: Did you guys change to fit the industry or did the industry change to accept you?

Greg K: A little of both. Our songs started evolving a bit in the’90s. Then Nirvana come breaking through, and that changed everything.

The Post: You were a punk band and then you became successful in the same system you were railing against?

Greg K: There was that conflict. Even in the ’80s we didn’t only consider ourselves as a punk band. The idea was to do it the way we wanted to do it instead of following the rules. And we continue to do that.
