A cabaret in its dressing gown is Moritz’s favorite. It’s magnificent in any state, but something about seeing it stripped to the bones, deshabillé, strikes a chord and he’s not one to ignore the music. So this visit could be reconnaissance… but wasn’t. A few years ago, sure. He like the rest of the country would do whatever it took to survive. Now though everyone was swinging high. Moritz saw no need to look down.

This late in the day was a strange twilight. Long past the night’s offerings, he’d cleaned himself up; this early, he wore a suit. Sometimes even he wanted to be just another face in the crowd. Rare, true, but not mythical. A hint of expertly applied eyeshadow left a trail of breadcrumbs if someone cared to follow it. Otherwise he could have been anyone.

At least until he engaged. Habit was an irresistible force. In answering his voice carried without really thinking about it, almost like he should be on stage. “I’m just here to watch the show before the show.” He came closer, still aloof. “I won’t be a nuisance… unless you want me to.”

The moment the stranger spoke, Micah couldn’t help but feel a distinct pull - that feeling that one only gets upon encountering a kindred spirit. Reddened lips curve up into a smile, the expression somehow curious and inviting all at once.

“Ah, you have taste, then.” He replied, already entertained by the conversation. “As you can see, not many people realise the value of that.”

He reached for a second glass, an eyebrow quirking upwards. “What will you have, hm? The place is full of nuisances, one more won’t make a difference.”

she’d be lying if she said she wasn’t hyperaware of his arm around her the second they make contact. not for any sort of bad reason — in fact it’s quite good — but it’s been a while since ilse’s been touched in such a genuinely friendly way. it’s unfamiliar, but she’d gladly get used to it. impish grin only grows, and she widens her eyes dramatically. ❛ not only the vip treatment, but now i get to keep secrets, as well? oh, you’re spoiling me! ❜

He smiles at that, opening the door to the girls’ dressing room with his free hand and ushering her inside. “Perhaps that’s a reason why you fit in so well around here - keeping secrets is one of our favourite pastimes.”

There’s a couch half-covered with costumes on one side of the room, and he gestures for her to sit. “Where shall we start, hm?”

“I know it was stupid of me to ask, but here we are… so, dear Master of Ceremonies, at least entertain me.” Admittedly they were as bad as each other, but when she rocked up at his door at all hours of the morning he had never turned her away. It was only right she returned such baseless kindness.

She played with her glass, his infectious smile catching on. “Besides, I have nothing else to do tonight; I can wait, darling.”

“I wouldn’t go so far as to call anything you do stupid.” He countered quickly, with a sudden seriousness that stood in direct contrast to their affectionate teasing. But then he chuckled, exhaling a narrow plume of cigarette smoke as he proceeded to give her an honest answer, despite it all.

“Things are much the same as they always are. I’ve a disappearing songbird - no surprises there - and there’s a leak coming through the dressing room ceiling that managed to ruin some of the girls’ costumes. Things really aren’t as glamorous here as I like to lead people to believe.”

there is a connection between her and the girls on stage. dina works hard to create it - staring at them with her lazy brand of intensity as she dreams of her past, what her future could have been - and hopes that they can feel it. as USUAL, it is enough for him to pick up on; it is enough for a conversation to begin and pull her halfway from her longing.

“ - might as well. ” she says plainly as she acknowledges him with a twist of her neck. “ just another usual night, yes ? why change now. ”

"It doesn’t have to be a usual night.” His tone is light as he pours a drink for each of them, but when his gaze flits back to here face there’s a contrasting seriousness in his eyes.

“When better to change than right now, hm?”

From my window, the deep solemn massive street. Cellar-shops where the lamps burn all day, under the shadow of top-heavy balconied façades, dirty plaster frontages embossed with scroll-work and heraldic devices. The whole district is like this: street leading into street of houses like shabby monumental safes crammed with the tarnished valuables and second-hand furniture of a bankrupt middle class. I am a camera with its shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking. Recording the man shaving at the window opposite and the woman in the kimono washing her hair. Some day, all this will have to be developed, carefully printed, fixed.
