okay so i was talking to tess ( @vaultfrozen ) earlier today and i have a lot of feelings about bash i’m gonna spew out lmao

so like first and foremost, bash genuinely believes that he’s doing the right thing and he’s trying so hard to do everything in his power to save shaun, and keep peggy safe. like in his mind, he isn’t a bad husband, and he really isn’t ?? he can definitely be negligent and muted in regards to peggy and her emotions/feelings, but he’s never once been like abusive or aggressive towards her??

the biggest issue in their marriage is how they operate in the wasteland. bash is more of the “shoot first, ask questions later” and plays the offensive just because he’d rather not be caught off guard/doesn’t trust anyone. and peggy is like, definitely the opposite. he just pushes way too hard because literally all he has left is peggy. that’s it. he doesn’t have anything else in this world besides the slight bit of hope that they might find their son, and they might have a shot at a normal life again??

that’s all he wants, is things to be normal again, and he’s just going about it in the only way he knows in a  world that is just so full of chaos and terrible things–fighting fire with fire, really.

so when peggy leaves post-game, bash is literally crushed ?? like everything that he did was all for nothing, honestly, and he would take it all back in a heartbeat and change everything he did just to get peggy back. he loves her so much, she’s the light of his life, and he constantly berates himself for not realizing that he was pushing her away the whole time.

His words hit her exactly where he likely hopes they will. A few months ago, that might’ve even been enough, might’ve been all it took to make her give up on this idea of the Capital Wasteland. This idea of leaving him. 

It’s a little too late now though, isn’t it? 

Peggy, as gently as always, pulls her hand from Bash’s grip, brows furrowed and face pained. He’s being unfair again, being cruel again, being himself again, and she didn’t want this to be the last memory she had of him but it looks like she’s going to have to make do. If it really comes to be that he ends up alone ( he will, she knows, and that’s half the reason it’s killing her to leave ) then he’ll just… have to cope. 

With a soft sigh, she steps up on her tiptoes to press the smallest and lightest of all kisses to the corner of his mouth. It says a lot of what she’s too… sad to put into words, maybe. She hopes he understands. 

A hand rests on his chest for a moment as she settles back down, and the frown’s returned by the time she speaks again. She wants to apologize. She wants to say a thousand things. She wants to say she might come back one day, and if he’s a better man… 

But she won’t, can’t. This is the best he’s got in him. 

         ‘ Wish me a safe trip, Bash. And don’t let this destroy you. ’

He’s been trying so hard in the only way he knows--diving straight into the problem, and pushing and pushing until he gets to the bottom of it. The unfortunate part is that Peggy can’t keep up most days, and Bash fails to recognize that.

             ‘ I’m calm-- I’m calm, alright? They’re the ones that don’t get it, what we’re going through. They don’t give a shit about us finding Shaun, but they love to point fingers. ’
