Hmmmmmmmmm
By a parent Erik Ronkin My daughter is a sophomore at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Wednesday, at 2:26 PM, she texted me to tell me the school was on a code red lockdown. For the next 2 hours I communicated with her while they waited in a closet in her classroom. We were actually lucky to be able to do so since the cell reception is really bad there and I had just a week earlier got her to use WhatsApp instead when at school. MSD has the Florida state champion marching band this year. Not too long ago, the whole community turned out at the school at midnight to welcome the band back after winning state. That champion band is now a little smaller. A freshman baritone player from my daughter’s section is one of the dead currently still in the 1200 building. A guard girl is one of the ones who died at the hospital. Another girl from band we have known since middle school jazz band days was shot in the leg and is in the hospital. There could be more. We have a band vigil today before the community vigil where we will likely find out. The kids are supposed to wear their shirts from their state program – the now ironically title Peace by Piece. The school is large and unbelievably well run. The whole campus is surrounded by chain link fence and has a moat on 2 sides. There are only 3 access points and only one is kept open during school hours. Security guards, usually coaches and vice administrators, patrol the campus in golf carts and watch every entrance. There are security cameras. There is a police officer in a marked squad car at the only entrance open during the day. They drill for emergencies. They use Twitter, auto-dialers, email and text to communicate. In short, the school is about as safe as you can make a large high school short of sending your kids to jail. We have heard people say we should be arming the teachers. One of our teachers had a great response to this. The county doesn’t provide basic school supplies but somehow is going to find the budget for guns and training. This is a very affluent community. People move to this area to go to MSD. The reason this school is so good is every parent buys supplies for the school, donates equipment to the school, and volunteers at the school. Kids whose parents can’t afford it are covered by the community. Current school budgets already put a great strain on the altruism of these teachers. I don’t think turning them into armed guards would help at all. Hopefully next year’s school supply list won’t include bullets. We keep hearing this “if you see something say something thing.” People said something. No one did anything about it. We have heard from his teachers who reported his problematic behavior since kindergarten. Not a single person who interacted with him is shocked. Every single kid in the school knew exactly who committed the murders before being told. He worked at the dollar store next to the movie theater where the kids all go to buy candy before the movies. We have heard some kids say they used to avoid the place if he was the only cashier. He was expelled for having weapons on campus and for fighting with his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend. He was on everyone’s radar. And yet he was able to buy an assault rifle and pass a background check. When we moved to this area, you would have to go a long ways to find a store that sold handguns. Now there are stores within a couple of miles of MSD that sell you as many AR-15’s you can afford as long as you pass a background check. No permit needed. We must need this kind of firepower for the safest city in Florida. The killer entered the senior parking lot entrance as it was opened at the end of the school day. We have heard he killed the security guard there. He knew the schedule. He had attended the school. He knew the drills. The building he shot up is the first one he could get to. The police responded lightning fast. They responded from everywhere. The senior management of many tri-country police departments live in the area and send their kids to this school. This event needed to be stopped before it started. I keep hearing the people on the news say this event is all too familiar, but for me the familiarity extends to the scene of the crime. I’m sure we will hear for a least a day or two more about how terrible this all was and how we need to do something and I’m sure that people’s personal politics will weigh heavy on what that thing we need to do is. But from a community standpoint, people here are clear on the basics. Our state and country failed us. I keep expecting the gun fetishists among us - including many of my friends - to come around. I am no longer suffering from this delusion. We need to come to grips with the fact that a large portion of our fellow citizen are sociopaths who value their guns more than our children and who think that the Bill of Rights consists of just one super amendment and nine suggestions. Unfortunately, they are loud and passionate sociopaths. We need to be louder and more passionate. We need to send these antisocial ideologies back to the tinfoil hat fringes where it belongs. Now is indeed the time. So here is the deal I want to cut. We get to keep and destroy all of your assault weapons and you get to keep your thoughts and prayers. ***** Addendum ***** When I wrote this, it was originally shared with only my friends. As requested, I made it public so people could share. My expectation when I did that was that I would have a far larger number people taking the side of the AR-15 over our children. I am humbled and overwhelmed by the depth and passion of support for what I wrote. And to all of you who want to see sanity return to our schools, churches, and streets, I say stay engaged, make sure you vote for candidates at home who will advocate for sane gun laws as passionately as you would, and donate to support candidates elsewhere in this country where sanity is less popular so that maybe we can make a dent in the strangle hold the gun lobby has on this country. Many gun owners reading this have been puzzled as to whether I am calling them all sociopaths. In short, no. I know many responsible gun owners who I would not label fetishists and sociopaths. One simple way to know if I'm talking about you would be to read this blog post - https://agingmillennialengineer.wordpress.com/2018/02/15/fuck-you-i-like-guns-2/ - from a veteran that was posted in the comments and if after you want to celebrate by going out and buying another child killing military weapon for your home, then yes, I am talking about you. I won't argue with you. This is a democracy. All we need to do is create a chorus of sanity loud enough to reduce your gun-addled screams to a whisper. If reading another long well written blog post is not your thing, here is a short quiz you can use to determine if you are a gun fetishist and a sociopath: When someone kills a large number of children using a military weapon, do you rush to the Internet to defend the rights of the weapon? When someone kills a large number of children using a military weapon, is your first thought that you hope there will be evidence of mental illness? (credit given if its your second thought with your first thought being please let is be a Muslim) When someone kills a large number of children using a military weapon, do you run out to buy more military weapons? When someone kills a large number of children using a military weapon, are you pre-armed with poorly sourced, easily debunked alternative facts in defense of your arsenal? When someone kills a large number of children using a military weapon, do you spend time correcting the terminology people use in describing the weapon? When someone kills a large number of children using a military weapon, do you like to bring up how the long dead founding fathers support your views? (Do you object to a standing army as strenuously as they would? Can you name any of them?) If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, I would highly recommend you do some serious soul searching. But who are we kidding, you are not capable of that. You would have to have one to be able to search it.
No, White Friend—You Weren’t “Embarrassed” by Barack Obama MAY 26, 2017 / JOHN PAVLOVITZ I remember the day after the Election, a friend of mine who happens to be white, remarked on social media that he “finally wasn’t embarrassed of America and our President.” I sprained my eyes rolling them and they have never fully recovered. Since then I’ve heard this sentiment echoed by more white folks than I can count, especially in recent months; supposed relief at once again having a leader who instills pride. Since I don’t have the time to ask each of the individually, I’ll ask here: So, you were embarrassed for the past 8 years, huh? Really? What exactly were you embarrassed by? Were you embarrassed by his lone and enduring twenty-five year marriage to a strong woman he’s never ceased to publicly praise, respect, or cherish? Were you embarrassed by the way he lovingly and sweetly parented and protected his daughters? Were you embarrassed by his Columbia University degree in Political Science or his graduating magna cum laude from Harvard Law School? Maybe you were embarrassed by his white American and Black Kenyan parents, or the diversity he was raised in as normal? Were you embarrassed by his eloquence, his quick wit, his easy humor, his seeming comfort meeting with both world leaders and street cleaners; by his bright smile or his sense of empathy or his steadiness—perhaps by his lack of personal scandals or verbal gaffes or impulsive tirades? No. Of course you weren’t. Honestly, I don’t believe you were ever embarrassed. That word implies an association that brings ridicule, one that makes you ashamed by association, and ifthat’s something you claim to have experienced over the past eight years by having Barack Obama representing you in the world—I’m going to suggest you rethink your word choice. You weren’t “embarrassed” by Barack Obama. You were threatened by him. You were offended by him. You were challenged by him. You were enraged by him. But I don’t believe it had anything to do with his resume or his experience or his character or his conduct in office—because you seem fully proud right now to be associated with a three-time married, serial adulterer and confessed predator; a man whose election and business dealings and relationships are riddled with controversy and malfeasance. You’re perfectly fine being represented by a bullying, vile, obnoxious, genitalia-grabbing, Tweet-ranting, Prime Minister-shoving charlatan who’s managed to offend all our allies and alienate millions of our citizens in a few short months. And you’re okay with him putting on religious faith like a rented, dusty, ill-fitting tuxedo and immediately tossing it in the garbage when he’s finished with it. None of that you’re embarrassed by? I wonder how that works. Actually, I’m afraid I have an idea. I hope I’m wrong. Listen, you’re perfectly within your rights to have disagreed with Barack Obama’s policies or to have taken issue with his tactics. No one’s claiming he was a flawless politician or a perfect human being. But somehow I don’t think that’s what we’re talking about here. I think the thing President Obama did thatreally upset you, white friend—was having a complexion that was far darker than you were ever comfortable with. I think the President we have now feels much better. Because objectively speaking, if what’s happening in our country right now doesn’t cause you great shame and doesn’t induce the continual meeting of your palm to your face—I don’t believe embarrassment is ever something you struggle with. No, if you claimed to be “embarrassed” by Barack Obama but you’re somehow not embarrassed by Donald Trump—I’m going to strongly suggest it was largely a pigmentation issue. And as an American committed to diversity and equality and to the liberty at the heart of this nation—that, embarrasses me.
Net Neutrilty and the demise is of it.
Today in the USA I found it interesting that I had an onslaught of emails about service terms and prices going up..possibly...this tells me the rollback of net neutrality is going to be expensive for the "everyday" American. I responded with this..
"If prices go up or content is slowed or "managed" and if changes occur with my cell service we will buy out our phones and stop service on all 4 and both direct TV's and internet. With the passing of net neutrality we do not feel that the internet or cell service is necessary for our daily lives. We want to be clear, we enjoy the service, however it is a "want" not a "need."
I suggest everyone in the US respond in this manner. We lived quite well before the intrusion of the internet. I for one would not miss it. I will not be chained by it. We are already rethinking the use of social media. It is an Intrusion nowadays.
I am truly scared of President Trump and for the World as We know it...
Let me state first off, this is Not a Repbulican or a Democratic rant. This is a True Concern for all life on thia planet. I did not write this but I’m copying because it’s well written and includes an important action point.
“Trump is very sick. He is paranoid. He reminds me of my own mother who suffered from Lewy body dementia at the end of her life and wherever she looked in the nursing home, she was sure that everyone was plotting against her. She too was certain that conspiracies were afoot everywhere. But she, at least, was not our president.
It is disturbing but not surprising to learn that behind the scenes at the White House Trump is wandering around talking about conspiracy theories and shocking his staff by suddenly saying that that is not his voice on the Access Hollywood video even though he already acknowledged that it was his voice and apologized to America for saying what he said. He is now wondering if someone conspired to get his voice on that tape. This is not the thinking of someone who is trying to be cagey. This is someone who is living in a paranoid fantasyland, disengaged from reality.
This is not a joke. We need to understand the seriousness of Trump's de-compensation. He is, after all, our president and our lives are at stake, not to mention the rest of the world.
When Trump is under duress, which he is right now from multiple sources including the Roy Moore situation, North Korea, the Mueller probe (Flynn is apparently going to cooperate with the Mueller team) and the pressure to pass tax cuts for the wealthy, we can see this president fall apart mentally in real time. He tells us what is going on in his head using Twitter and his stream of consciousness when he talks off teleprompter at public gatherings.
In just the past two days we have witnessed 1) The Pocahontas comment that came out of nowhere, an insult to the Navajo coders who were in the White House to be honored. 2) Re-tweets of unverified videos or pictures of Muslims committing violent crimes against white people. 3) A revival of Trump's birther lie that Obama was not born in the US. and 4) Trump's belief that he was not speaking on the Access Hollywood tape.
And that is just what we know about. There could be much more that White House staffers are seeing but not saying.
When paranoid people experience stress they get worse. As Mueller's probe gets closer to the Oval Office and Trump has to face the idea that the investigation will NOT be over by the end of the year (that is his allegedly cheerful prognosis which is not based in reality) not to mention the likelihood that Trump's own close allies like Flynn and family members like Trump Jr and Jared Kushner are going to be implicated, and very possibly himself, we can predict his sense of being threatened will cause his descent into deeper and more bizarre paranoia. We can see the event coming like a train speeding towards a brick wall. This situation is combustible. Congress needs to wake up.
Only congressional leaders can 1) legislate to contain and control Trump's military power, and 2) Only congress can deny Trump the power to fire Mueller - as special counsel he must have protected status. Everyone is waiting for Mueller's findings but I worry that Congress is not ready for the coming events even before Mueller's findings come out. Especially if there are other pressures on the president that cause him to feel threatened.
As part of a group of concerned mental health professionals I will be going to Washington DC next week to have conversations with lawmakers about the president's mental state. I am going with forensic psychiatrists Dr. James Gilligan and Dr. Bandy Lee. We have scheduled a full day of meetings with lawmakers. Dr. Lee was the driving force behind the Yale conference that generated the book, "The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump- 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President." This group of concerned mental health experts and many others in the field have determined that the Tarasoff duty to warn supersedes the Goldwater Rule that kept mental health experts silent. With this president, we have to speak up.
Please call your congressional representatives and tell them about your concerns about the president's mental health. If congressional leaders hear from you they might be willing to gain more information from our group or listen to other mental health experts. We need to start this conversation with as many lawmakers as possible who are willing to listen.”
The Madness of President Trump. This is a Danger to Our World and Millenials that means you too.
