Danish designer Poul Henningsen, was completely and utterly obsessed with light. He is thought to be one of the world’s first lighting architects, devoting his career to investigating its importance and how it could enhance our well being. His theories centred around the observer not being subject to direct glare from an electric source. He would often use a series of layers to spread the light and hide the bulb, creating a softer ambience that diffused the glare. It was in 1924 that Henningsen designed his first ever multi-shade lamp, becoming known as the "PH-lamp". The design was based on the scientific analysis of a shade's function, with the size, shape, and position being determined by the distribution of light and amount of glare.
