Seeing The Flats (pt. 2) after The Flats, I was struck by how strongly they echo each other while still feeling so different in mood and structure. The shift from the oval to the circle, from the rectangle to the square, from that more stylized waterway to the more naturalistic winding river, etc etc, makes it feel less like a continuation than a rethinking. And man, the birds—and that feather. I’d love to hear anything you’d want to say about how the two paintings relate, and what “Part 2” means for you.
Thank you!
Lately I've been working on getting more comfortable with the idea of repetition or iteration. For a long time - decades even - I struggled with this idea that everything I did needed to be somehow completely new. Which is, of course, nonsense and impossible. Giving myself permission to repeat an idea that I'm not finished with has been enormously liberating. Hell, I can make the same painting 100 times and there will be something new and worthwhile in each one, and painting #98 will be a completely different thing from #99, let alone #3.
With this more recent one I wanted the birds more in focus, almost as characters, and I've been working to get more comfortable with deep blacks. That's something that really doesn't show up well in my crappy phone photos. For the landscape, I don't know. It's so so weird being out here in this desert as someone new to the place and with a fairly vivid visual imagination. From the banal (endless suburbs and strip malls, ill suited agriculture) to the extreme (militarized border getting crueler by the day, data centers) I'm kind of constantly horrified by what we've done to this landscape. I meet so many people who seem immune to the beauty of this place, and that's kind of easy to do when it's all been paved. The mountains become a backdrop that you stop seeing, and the flora and fauna become weeds and pests. I'm trying to work through imagining what it used to be and what it could be. I don't think this piece fully addresses that, but it was at least something I was thinking about.
i have your dandelion diptych on my wardrobe doors and its one of the first things i see when i wake, and the last thing i see before sleep. it makes me so so so so happy to see it every time. there were mail Shenanigans getting it to me in dublin (my friend mailed it and it was stuck in rerouting limbo for 10 months) but its here and its so so gorgeous. i love your work and i hope it continues to bring you as much joy as it does me
This means absolutely the world to me, thank you so much! Wow, 10 months is a long time.
This was such a kind message, I'll be holding onto this for a while. Thank you so much.

Hi y'all! Giving this another push - we have sold very few tickets in this raffle, despite it being for an incredibly worthy cause and there being some amazing items available. J's Family is not getting the help they so desperately need.
Our friend John Cameron Mitchell of Hedwig and the Angry Inch just announced his upcoming role in Oh, Mary! and is adding a pair of tickets to a dress rehearsal in New York on January 30. If you're in or around NYC that could be an absolutely ridiculous prize for only $10. And very few tickets are selling so fortunately / unfortunately your odds are good! Get those tickets babes.
The Hedwig and the Angry Inch creator will return to Broadway in Cole Escola's hit comedy.
BID ON ITEM #44 Y'ALL THIS IS INSANE

Just spent a while looking through your beautiful work once again… there’s something so piercing about it. As I try to describe it the words coming to mind are things like “demanding,” “sharp,” “alive,” which surprised me a little because much of it is also very still and serene. Yet you imbue these objects with such PRESENCE. They look straight at you and demand that you look back.
My heart is so full. I love that the world is an infinite abundance and I will never run out of beauty to discover and drink in. Thank you for being one of the many drops in that ocean.
Be well, keep painting, keep noticing all this mundane sacredness.
Thank you so much! It means the world to be seen like this.
