RM, our purpose in life & the masterpiece that is Intro: Persona
In RM’s 2018 UN Speech, he challenged us to
“Find your name and find your voice by speaking yourself.”
Background: BTS was at the UN to support Generation Unlimited, a campaign to prepare young people for their future
RM addressed a fundamental question that we’ve all asked ourselves—what are we going to do with our lives
to live & make a difference
He answered this for himself quite early on
RM’s artistic vision is to share his voice(s)
The impact he seeks is to heal people & give strength
He also unpacked this in Intro: Persona
RM explored his name—his authentic self
He also gave us his voice by speaking himself
The underlying assumption could be that we will reach our life’s intended impact as we find & express our real selves
Questions related to identify, purpose & impact run through RM’s music
And he’s always been very real about it—it’s not been easy; it’s been messy
Describing the cover of “Do You”, he said “I wanted to show that I was two-faced.” (Hiphopplaya, 2015)
In Intro: Persona, he expressed doubt that he’s good enough for his calling
He also shared how he came to accept his shadow called hesitation
And modeled growth—how to find our name & voice
And the key is that he’s been willing to do the hard work of being real & giving voice to himself
And I wonder if we’re doing the same
When I think about how I’ve impacted others
It’s always been when I’ve been real & actively showed up
As I connect with those around me, people’s worldviews have slowly shifted, just by my mere presence in their lives
