Body Worship

Bodies are a patchwork. Freckles. Tattoos. Dimples. Scars.

Their bodies are the roadmap of their lives. 

Ian knows every story Mickey's body has to tell. The gun shot scar to his right shin, the matching one to his left butt cheek. The nicks and slices on his knuckles from years of fighting dirty. 

Mickey knows Ian's body just as intimately. The mottled, discoloured skin of his right palm. The crick in his nose from a break not properly set. The freckles on his eyelids.

They touch each other with a reverence no one else can replicate. Caresses. Kisses. Embraces. Cherished.

I don't think we talk enough about what a huge romantic gesture it was for Ian to give mickey all of his money at the border.

Like, they've grown up in poverty. They've grown up never knowing if they're gonna have enough money to feed themselves.

Ian has worked so, so hard to build some stability for himself. He's always been so ambitious and wanted more for himself. And he's had this job that he's so proud of, that gave him a purpose again after wanting to end his life.

He has a bank account for the first time in his life. For the first time in his life, he's in a position to be able to set some money aside.

And he gives every single cent he has to Mickey. He goes back to having nothing in the bank, to not having that extra level of security and stability

And he does it for Mickey, like it's nothing. Because he wants Mickey to be able to get himself something to eat, and gas for the car, and maybe somewhere warm to stay. He wants him to have some modicum of comfort. He wants to provide for him in the only way he can from a distance.

Little ways they show love and affection for each other

Ian always makes sure there is a six pack of Old Style in the fridge so Mickey can have a cold beer after work

Mickey installed a mini-fridge in Ian’s bedside table and makes sure he always has bottled water and protein-bars

Ian gives Mickey foot massages all the time. Mick will relax on the couch with his legs in Ian’s lap watching “Storage Wars”

Ian holds Mickeys hand when they are shopping. Mickey gets frustrated and overwhelmed when grocery shopping. The lights, the sounds, the crowds, the amount of choices and options of brands and products; he never had choices when it came to food growing up in that house you ate what you got.

Mickey will always say the full phrase “I love you” because Ian needs to hear it in full. Mickey may nicknames all the time, but he makes sure to use Ian’s name when he says he loves him “I love you, Ian”

Ian leaves little notes around their home for Mickey. “Take the trash out, babe”, “Hey handsome”, “Remember to drink more water today and eat some fruit”

Physical touch. All the time. Holding hands, knees touching when they sit down to eat, a hand on the other’s knee or thigh, keeping each other grounded.

They never go to bed angry. That’s a rule Ian implemented, and they stick to it. If they’re fighting and need space, that’s ok, but they will never sleep apart ever. They must makeup before bedtime…or perhaps make up in bed…

Just revisited a podcast/interview Cameron Monaghan did around coming back to shameless, where he talked about how they explored so much of his character, but since they “lost his primary relationship” and “sort of premise of the show” IE Mickey Milkovich, he ultimately knew his character was reaching a dead end, and he elaborated on what he found so interesting about their relationship: “finding a person who’s had a life of mistakes but is with somebody who has made far worse mistakes… and how they protect eachother and fight for eachother and essentially how they’ve kept eachother alive… i think thats kind of fascinating” well YES! Im literally so thankful the actors saw into their nuance and fought for them, all the ways till they finally ended up married after years of Mickey leaving!

Mickey and Ians relationship remains one of the most layered and psychologically complex to me (individually speaking and their dynamic), so expanding on “essentially how they’ve kept eachother alive” their co-dependency, taking care of eachother… they’re so toxic in so many ways, but ultimately they understand there is no one else for eachother because of it. Ian not fronting and learning to be cared for (particularly in seasons 11) and Mickey managing Ians temperament and learning how to best navigate Ians BPD without scaring him like ugh… anyways, whilst there are so many inconsistency’s and writing failures, what remains constant is the passion and care N & C put into their characters, you can feel how much they understand them and want to do right by them. Like to me, this is the only time when yelling at the Showrunners was the correct thing to do - the mere possibility that I&M’s story could’ve ended with that Jail visit. JHC.

Its just so nice to hear CM recognise the value in I&M’s rel to Ians character - Ian is my favourite, and he can as a character stand on his own two feet, but Mickey is essentially his other half and a lot of what made his story so compelling, and its cool hearing CM see that truth despite working in absence of N and developing other relationships outside of Mickey (which I think was the correct way to go, it was healthy for Ian to develop new bonds and experience other relationships).

Love how Mickey is a sensitive, loving boy wrapped up in a violent thug package. And Ian is a violent thug wrapped in a loving sunshine boy package.

People like to act like Ian is all sweet and innocent when he's just as capable of violence, he's just not as easily provoked.

The parallels of Mickey unionizing the sex workers and Ian unionizing the prison bottoms. Mickey helping Debbie dispose of a body, Ian helping Mandy dispose of a body. Ian beating the fuck out of Byron and Mickey beating the fuck out of Ned.

They are the same person in different fonts. They are best friends and the love of each other's lives.

Ian's violence is usually protective in nature, and he shows this dangerous part of himself in defence of those he loves, but people who don't know him well wouldn't expect that side of him. Mickey is sensitive and affectionate and supportive with the people he loves, and the people he loves and trusts the most are the only ones who ever see this part of him.

They balance each other out.
