The work is a cubist-style "joiner," assembled from roughly 140 individual photographs to portray American actress Theresa Russell lying on a bed while portraying Marilyn Monroe.

Director Nicolas Roeg commissioned Hockney to create the artwork as a prop for his 1985 film "Insignificance," where it appears as a centerfold. Rather than displaying a single perspective, Hockney used a Pentax camera to photograph the scene from numerous angles, forcing the viewer's eye to linger over time and space. The collage measures approximately 120.5 × 177.5 cm.
