The 30/30 Project: Day 30

This is my last poem and my last post for a while. Today’s poem, “Good-bye to Finality” (I could come up with nothing better), is up on the blog. Thanks for your support, encouragement, and sponsorship throughout this amazing month. I couldn’t have done it alone.

The 30/30 Project: Day 29

This is the penultimate poem and my penultimate post about poems. Perhaps. I need to think about what’s going to happen to this blog when I’m done with this project. I’ve learned that “publishing” poems to my blog disqualifies them for publication elsewhere. Do I care? I can’t yet decide.

Today’s poem, “Touching” comes from a partial list of words, or a grocery list, that I found in an old notebook. I’m not sure what it was, but now there is a poem! Two more poems to go!

The 30/30 Project: Day 27

Today’s poem, “Walking Home,” has been percolating in my head for quite a while. It will be up on the blog later today. I wrote another rather strident poem but decided not to post it for fear of offending my family. The line between poetry and autobiography can be tricky.

Today’s poem, “Snow Day,” is a long narrative beast that used to exist as a short story. I’m not sure how I feel about it now as a poem. I’m not sure how I feel about it, but it will be up on the blog later today.

The 30/30 Project: Day 25

Today’s poem, “Driving Home” is up on the blog. This was another suggested prompt from my dad, though I’m not sure what I think of it. It’s definitely missing something somehow. It has the usual moment of longing and sadness, but I’ve got more work to do, I think.

Today’s poem, “Careless,” will be up later on the blog. Thank you all for the prompts you’ve given me. I couldn’t have gotten through this month without them, without you. I’m sort of curious about what will happen when I stop writing and start revising.

Today’s poem, “Good-bye Home” is a very, very rough draft, but it’s up on the blog for all to see. Seven more poems to go, and I feel strangely sad about it. But I’ve been assembling an odd assortment of poems. September will be for revision.

Today’s poem, “The Hypnotist,” was prompted by my friend Karl, who asked me to think about poems in public places, including churches. Today’s prompt was given to me by my father: write something about reading on the beach, one of my favorite things to do, though it wasn’t always. I used to want cities and museums and theater. I still want those things, but I also want the beach.

Inspiration for today’s poem comes from a lovely beer fest last night that turned into an unexpected bee fest. They just never stopped! It was interesting to see how we all handled it, running and squealing with our beers. It was great fun!

The 30/30 Project: Day 13

I continue the theme of yesterday’s poem, an exploration of Freud’s Dora character, only I pair her with my own dreams. I’m working my way through Freud’s case study, and it’s so shocking how matter-of-fact he is about sex, considering when he was publishing. He is the father of the unashamed overshare. I don’t think this is a bad thing at all.

The 30/30 Project: Day 12

Today’s poem “Text Message Neurosis”, which will appear on the blog later today, was inspired by Freud’s Dora character (Dora: An Analysis of a Case of Hysteria). My friend Adam, who sponsored me, requested more of these Dora poems, which I initially wrote over ten years ago. I’ve been rereading Freud to try to get myself back in the same frame of mind as when I wrote the initial batch of poems, but it’s hard. Still, reading Freud is always fun--he’s even more outrageous than I remembered. We’ll see if I can get myself back into that rhythm.
