That Weezer Honda Commercial
IOh, Honda--what are you thinking? The new commercial for the Honda pilot makes about as much sense as Toyota’s Skeletor takeover: that is, it doesn’t.
If you haven’t seen it, it has a bored family driving around in the ALL-NEW HONDA PILOT ELITE who, for no reasons, decides to all start singing “Buddy Holly” by Weezer. Or, as the video description says:
Driving through what looks like very barren land, a large family suffers from boredom during their road trip. But, when the youngest boy randomly sings a lyric to the Weezer hit song "Buddy Holly" and every other family member joins in, the car ride becomes a hit. Soon, in this commercial from the director of "Juno" and "Up in the Air," the 2016 Pilot Elite turns into a moving choir.
Why are they singing Weezer? How does the little kid know the words? And, most importantly, WHAT DOES ANY OF THIS HAVE TO DO WITH A HONDA PILOT?
The answer, of course, is nothing. I guess the hope is that people think, “Hey, I like that song, I should spend 40K on a new Honda Pilot”?
PS: I say this as somehow who owns a Honda Pilot. And the Blue Album. And actually saw Weezer tour for the Blue Album.
PSS: This commercial is so empty and pointless that I decided to create a little backstory to help make sense of everything. I think it works:
