"Oh my god…Jake?! Wow, yeah I didn’t…How have you been? I tried texting you, but I guess they didn’t go through…Did you get that $50 okay?"

"Alright. Let me think of a movie we could watch… Maybe we could watch one that came out recently or maybe a comedy. I’m not really sure, there’s lots to pick from. How about Wreck it Ralph? That’s a good movie."

" "Wreck it Ralph"? Okay, sure. If you say it's a good one, then I'm sure I'll like it. But, we should probably get snacks or something before we start watching."

[ ☣ ] — "Heh, right. Mr. Davies. I almost forgot about him.” He could recall the morning when the man came banging on the door of their home, with all his shouting and accusations. Annette had been helping Sherry to get ready for school and it was William who had to deal with their unruly neighbor. "Too bad him and his wife ended up moving away, she made the best pumpkin pie.” Mister and Missus Davies found themselves a nice new plot of real estate, far out in the deepest and darkest spot of the woods… …which just so happened to be not far out from the Birkin’s own backyard. It was a waste, really, but nobody likes having a nosy neighbor. He looks over his daughter with a slight smile. She’s a good kid, with all the best intentions. Perhaps one day when she’s older, they’ll let her know just what it is that they do. Till then — important stuff — will have to suffice for now. "Well you’re mother is right. We do have very special work to do, so it’s important that we don’t let ourselves get too distracted.” Except, William seemed to take things a little too far. Eating — not unless it was necessary. Sleeping was a complete waste of time. Though he had to admit… sometimes a snack and a short nap did him some good. There’s a look that crosses her face and it seems a bit too familiar to him. That look a person gets whenever a switch is flipped in their mind. A sudden stroke of genius. — Oh right. She must have got that from him. "Pinky… Bear?" It takes him a moment to realize just what she’s talking about. Her favorite little plush toy. Annette had gotten it for her when she was still just a toddler. "Hmm… you know what? I think that might be precisely what I need.” It isn’t, but he’s willing to play along as he tries to hold back another yawn. Without keeping his mind occupied with research, he can feel himself begin to wind down. If he doesn’t get her out of here soon, he’ll end up passing out at his desk. "Let’s make a deal, huh? If you go back to bed, then I’ll take Pinky Bear and so he’ll help me get some sleep too. How’s that sound?”

"Yeah! Pinky Bear's the best at helping me sleep..." she smiled, shyly looking up at her father. Already she had a plan in mind.

First she'd head back to her room and grab Pinky Bear and bring him back to Daddy. Then she'd grab his plate and take it to the kitchen, so Mommy didn't get mad at him for not eating. Then she'd try to sleep.

"Okay Daddy, I'll go get him for you," Sherry wiggled her way off the seat, before stopping. "You won't shut the door on me, right?"

What if this was Daddy trying to make her leave him alone? People did that to her in school, but her Daddy wouldn't, right?

"I'll be right back...okay?"

Quietly, she tiptoed from the room, and crept down the hall. She bounced onto her bed, grabbing her bear, before turning back.

"Sherry! It's been a while. I thought I would have never been able to see you again."

"Oh my god…Jake?! Wow, yeah I didn’t…How have you been? I tried texting you, but I guess they didn’t go through…Did you get that $50 okay?"

"Yeah, me too. I wish zombies and monsters could give us a break, you know."

"I was thinking that we could watch a movie. You can pick which one we watch."

"Sherry! It's been a while. I thought I would have never been able to see you again."

"Oh my god…Jake?! Wow, yeah I didn’t…How have you been? I tried texting you, but I guess they didn’t go through…Did you get that $50 okay?"

"Yeah, that’s true. I guess that would be an important time to make calls or message someone. But thank goodness they do."

"That would be unpleasant. Wouldn’t want people to be looking for you all the time like the Ustanak did to me. That’s no fun. But maybe since we’re here now, we can do something together."

"Exactly… I’ve had enough of being chased around for a while anyways. Between Raccoon and China..."

"Sure! That'd be a fun break...do you have anything in mind?"

[ ☣ ] — It wasn’t his best line, but then again, he was lying to a child. He didn’t exactly need to convince her. To be honest — ironically enough — William didn’t enjoy lying to his little girl, and whenever he could help it, he would try to avoid doing so. — But sometimes the dutiful father had to bend the truth just a little bit. "I’m sure he was mistaken. It was probably just too dark for him to see correctly.” And with that, he offers her a small yet reassuring smile. His eyes glance up, peeking to the clock on the wall and for a moment, his mind drifts back to his research. There’s still quite a bit to look over but he doesn’t seem to mind the unscheduled break. It isn’t very often that he allows himself the opportunity to share quality time with his only offspring. "Hm?" It’s Sherry’s small voice that steals his attention and William blinks, focusing his gaze onto her. "Oh no, sweetheart. You’re not bugging me. You actually showed up at the perfect time to remind me to take a little break. I hadn’t realized how late it’s gotten. I suppose I’ve gotten pretty careless, huh?”

She smiled up at him, trying to ignore how his eyes did the same thing mommy's did when she didn't want Sherry to know she was lying.

After all, her daddy was the smartest daddy around, and if he said there were no monsters...

"Like when Mr. Davies said he saw the dog with icky skin, right?" she said, tilting her head."He was just confused."

The older man from the end of the street had gone around the next morning, demanding to know who'd let their diseased animal wander freely in his yard. Mommy had told her though that he'd only seen a raccoon, and gotten confused.

"Are you sure? Mommy said I was never ever supposed to bother you..." her voice got even quieter, worried. What if she woke mommy up somehow? She'd be in so much trouble...

"Nu uh! You're just doin' your important stuff! To help people, right? But...you should sleep too."

After a second, Sherry got an idea.

"Do you...do you wanna borrow Pinky Bear? He always helps me fall alseep...you can use him after you're done working if you want to, daddy..."

Role model? Hardly. The list of her mistakes was longer than her arm. Things she and many others would never recover from.

"I know I’m a little behind on things, but I wanted to touch base with you about the C virus."

Truth was, they were seeing more and more of it. Many areas refused to be vaccinated, Usually those where government was corrupt and the BSAA had little reach. They still couldn’t do anything after infection, not yet anyway. But as with any deadly plague, vaccinating saved lives. Things like polio and measles were wiped out in countries where vaccinations ran high. She hoped she would be able to do that with the C virus. Hell with any of them.

But that was a long road to come yet.

Sherry nodded. She had been sure that their meeting would go in that direction. After all, the C Virus continued to be one of the most prevalent threats they face, and she had been in the thick of it for a year.

Hopefully she wouldn't have to repeat too much about her time in the Chinese lab again...

"Sounds good. Hopefully I'll be able to answer all your questions..." she said, slowly relaxing. She wasn't nearly as nervous as before, but her jiters were still there.

"Sherry! It's been a while. I thought I would have never been able to see you again."

"Oh my god…Jake?! Wow, yeah I didn’t…How have you been? I tried texting you, but I guess they didn’t go through…Did you get that $50 okay?"

"I guess that would make sense. But talking to people on missions isn’t always the best idea. You never know what could happen during a mission."

"I have’t been up to much. What about you?"

"But I have to coordinate too. Check in with my handler and all that...So was a necessity. Luckily the D.S.O handles that a little differently..."

"No? Relaxing, then? I've been doing some missions, but nothing major...Last thing I need is to be in the news. I get the feeling that people finding out that the "Birkin girl" is still alive would be...unpleasant."

"Sherry! It's been a while. I thought I would have never been able to see you again."

"Oh my god…Jake?! Wow, yeah I didn’t…How have you been? I tried texting you, but I guess they didn’t go through…Did you get that $50 okay?"

"Who would wanna read things like that? That’s your own personal stuff or whatever and people shouldn’t care about that…"

"You’re right about that. Fifty is a good number after all. He probably wouldn’t accept that amount and I wouldn’t let him take me in. As if I would let him capture me any time soon."

"No idea. Someone who thinks that I'd be texting state secrets or something, I guess...then again I did use it to talk to people during my missions."

"Heh...yeah, I don't doubt that you could get away from him...Just glad we didn't have to do that though..."

"So...what have you been up to, Jake?"

"Sherry! It's been a while. I thought I would have never been able to see you again."

"Oh my god…Jake?! Wow, yeah I didn’t…How have you been? I tried texting you, but I guess they didn’t go through…Did you get that $50 okay?"

"I can understand why you give that phone up. You can never trust a phone from him. Too many things could happen."

"But that’s fine. If you think about it, fifty isn’t too bad either. And I wouldn’t really need that much money."

"Yeah...and who knows who else could listen in on my conversations or read my text messages..."

"Haha, hey, a fifty can buy some decent things! But yeah...I don't honestly think Simmions would have upheld your first asking price...He probably would have taken you into custody instead. Or, at least, tired to take you in."
